England Exchange was quite an emotional ride, it made me experience quite strong, often negative feelings but I believe it only means the writing was great, the message of the story didn't leave me indifferent. Welp, things I liked: +pretty art. Visually it was quite a pleasant experience. +cultural aspect. MC is an American who goes for an exchange trip for half a year to England. I had a little bit similar experience. For me it was short tho, about a month. My main purpose was to study English in London but I, unlike MC, lived in a family. It was quite an immersive experience. I'm familiar though with living in a hostel full of ppl from all over the world, but it was in the States for me. So, those little bits of info about weather, similar and not so much words, like 'biscuits' in UK and US, it was great fun, oh and Russia was mentioned so many times I even tried to check if the dev was Russian by some chance but it looks like nope, so my 3 fav countries surprisingly united in one weird mixture was astonishingly exciting and nostalgic. The main reason I enjoyed my walkthrough \o/ https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1475775590 +optional gender for MC. A great idea tho not what I expected to get, sadly. +cards and achievements that actually count, plus one “perfect” game for your steam statistics. +checklist is a lovely feature, the main menu is neatly organized, very convenient to check your progress. +lots of love interests of all kinds and despite our time together being very short, it still was enough to sympathize all the chars, it was fun to learn their pasts, motives, hidden character traits. +different endings were fascinating. For some love interests it was typical—good, neutral, bad, for some good outcome was simply impossible, some chars were too friendly to possibly achieve bad endings. I found it a nice feature. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2710454200 +adult options are hilarious, I laughed the first time I tried them. Visually everything looked awesome, that's why I found it a bit surprising and disappointing there was actually no adult content in CGs or text-wise. You know, at first I turned that option to see romanceable chars naked all the time, imagining living in a nudist world but soon I got tired of that, it was a nice feeling wishing actually to see ppl dressed, clothes did reflect some of their personalities. I didn't expect that truly. But nah, nudists beaches may be ok but not the whole life experience. +quite frequent choices. What I disliked: --that gender feature for MC kinda disappointed me. I expected it to be completely optional, I thought I'd be free to choose a gender I want for dif love interests but it turned out there was zero freedom in that, if I'm not a fan of yuri romances I still was forced to play through that to get all versions of CGs, to get all achievements. That felt forceful and not very nice. I kept recollecting that sexist char, talking all the time about exclusively men and women-like things, the text mainly is different in pronouns, why make replay that, isn't once enough?! The double CGs are appreciated of course but I'd prefer if it didn't matter girl or boy I was at that time, it'd be nice to be treated just like a human MC, that's all. --I'm still missing one ending, it didn't prevent me from finishing the game but I still didn't get that feeling of closure, I wasted more than enough time trying out dif choices but without success. There's a steam guide but it's only for achs. I'd prefer the one covering the whole checklist. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2712578280 --I wish there was more content story-wise. All the routes seem too rushed, despite funny adult options there're no intimate text descriptions. The plot is not very exciting, the story is more like slice-of-life, one could read it for juicy details but actually you don't get that too. So, in general it turns out like a lukewarm experience. --some typos. I'd like to devote a special paragraph to Angelo. The char, as I got scanning negative reviews, took the main blame and hate xD Yup, sexist in all his stereotypical glory. But believe me, I grew up in such a society, had to deal with men with especially extreme sexist attitude, centuries of traditions don't just vanish easily :( Believe me, Angelo is a cutie in comparison. Despite short routes, there WAS a char development, he WAS thankful to MC for making him reevaluate his beliefs. And he was never blindly sexist, he had his reasons and he explained that. And I won't disagree that it feels good when a caring man carries smth heavy for you, for example. I know he was mainly annoying but I know what it feels to be raised surrounded by narrow-minded ppl teaching you all these stereotypes, believe me it's hard to change, I know it myself. He could tho, welp, in his good and neutral endings. A lot of what he said WAS irritating but the fact the devs showed such ppl exist, have their reasons and may possibly be changed with the right (not hateful) approach. It felt good. With my MC despite having a short time with all those characters I managed to get unforgettable memories, they taught me to respect myself first of all, find the solution in difficult situations, and always try my best in achieving my goals. This is a very bad project. The idea is good, and I sincerely do not understand how it could have been spoiled. But the developer did it. All characters are clichéd, most of them rude and toxic towards the main character and each other for no reason. I do not think that choosing a game in the genre of Otome you want this... just this.
Is one likable character too much to ask for?
TL;DR
2/10: (Weighed against the discounted price.) A trashy visual novel in which the trashiness is counter-intuitive. The idea of two different MC's and a slightly different story for the two MC's was an okay idea, but the developer writes like the only way they know how to have drama in a story, is to make all of the characters utterly despicable. If that's not enough, each NPC character has only one unique graphic, and the end screen is nothing but a picture of a blue sky. This VN is only useful for your completionist friends who only buy games for the achievements. (Just make sure that they don't actually read the stories.)
Overview
A main character from New York (gender detriment) getting a chance to study abroad in London while working a part time job and getting to live in a hostel full of hormonal young adults. What could possibly go wrong? In England Exchange all of these other characters have utterly despicable personalities, the good parts are effectively glossed-over with almost no details of what happened, and the only thing that's changed after 2018, is that the other characters can be seen in the buff. (But only in stock scenes.) Work, study, hostel drama which ends with money being stolen out of the cash register. Maybe the player finds love, maybe they don't... But seriously, why would anyone wanna be in a relationship with anyone in this VN besides Ashley? (Ashley goes down as the least-worst because while the best thing about her was her looks, she didn't come as close to being as annoying or as evil as the rest of the characters in this VN.)
Graphics and Sound
The graphics were decent enough for the most part, but were ultimately ruined by the fact that the VN is almost entirely stock footage. Players can unlock a unique scene if they make the correct choices. But regardless if the player is playing as either Flynn or Malia, the scene is the same with the only difference being which MC is also in the scene. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=920486495 (Above screenshot used with permission.) The between-scenes were pleasing enough, which feature either MC studying and working their job while an exact date is featured on the screen. The music was also decent enough. None of the tunes stood out as likable, but the music was enough of a proper fit for the story for the most part.
Positives
The idea of allowing for the player to choose to play as a MMC or an FMC was a unique idea, and this helped for giving each character one romantic partner not available to the the other. Flynn has enough contact to romance Aasi, but not enough contact to find out how horrible Aasi happens to be. Malia can romance Angelo who's never almost never encountered during Flynn's story, but Malia works closely with Angelo at a hotel job. (Flynn works in a pub instead.) England Exchange has a walkthrough posted in the guides on Steam, so the player can sweep all of the achievements without having to play too much attention to the story... Nobody should read this story. It's trashy, and even if the player is someone like ol' Il Pallino who enjoys a trashy VN, then the player is going to be let down by the lack of sex and nudity. (While sex and nudity were mostly banned on Steam until Negligee: Love Stories was released in 2018, apparently the developer didn't know how to upload a patch outside of Steam for the players to play like with all of those other VN's full of "good parts"!)
Negatives
Why does everyone else in England Exchange have to be so horrible?!! I suppose that everyone looks alright, and it was appreciated that one of the women has some flab on her. But other than that, someone who's buying England Exchange for it's story (LOL!) is best advised to romance Ashley and then never play again. All in all, the characters would be like the WWE only having bad guy wrestlers, and the least-worst character doesn't stand out enough to be a good guy.... Errrrrrrrrr... Gal! Completionists may by bothered that there's gay walls/straight walls to overcome in order to unlock all of the unique CG's in order to earn one of the achievements. Certainly no woman is going to be complaining about wanting to romance Aasi as Malia, but there have been some complaints from gay(?) people that Angelo can't be romanced by Flynn. (Even then, there likely weren't many women that would want to romance Angelo on account of his despicable personality.)
Conclusion
This VN sucks... Maybe England Exchange didn't suck as bad as a BCH Waves Studio VN, but at least BCH Waves Studio was kind enough as to compensate players with thousands of achievements for having the gall to read their VN's. (Before anyone looking for lots of achievements for their profiles get excited, BCH Waves Studio was kicked off of Steam, and their achievements no longer count on a player's profile.) Apparently it didn't occur to Hanabira that trashy VN's are effectively worthless without lots of sex scenes and nudity. The lack of a proper end screen leaves for an unsatisfying feeling, and regardless if the ending was good, neutral, or bad. Only buy if you're looking to have some more achievements and a completed game on your profile, but try not to actually read what is on screen.
The honest word of Il Pallino... OR ELSE!

LIKEABLE CHARACTERS? NOT ON THIS EXCHANGE
If you enjoy Visual Novels with a heavy emphasis on dating, then stay away from England Exchange. At first, I thought that this was yet another slice-of-life + dating sim mix, but the game showed its true colors really quickly. Making a game about dating, where all romanceable characters are awful is an insane achievement. If that was the intention, then congratulations to the authors. I think that the idea for the game is not bad, but the execution was terrible. There's no doubt that some players may be interested in seeing toxic/weird relationships in the games that they are playing. If you're one of them, disregard my negative rating. If not, avoid this game. Story You're playing as a (male or female) American college student spending a semester abroad in London. It's mostly a slice-of-life, where you're working, studying, and dating (optional). There are also some erotic scenes when on a romantic path (or rather one CG scene and a bunch of nude sprites). Based on your choices, you can befriend or date various people. You can also ignore them if you want. Everything leads to slightly different endings. Only certain relationships have "extended" endings where we can see what happens in the future. You can date same-sex or opposite-sex characters, with some rare exceptions (for example: Aasi is not interested in female MC). Unfortunately, you won't find any "normal" person in England Exchange. Even if someone behaves okay-ish, you'll see some weird stuff about them while on the romance path. Stereotypical characters wouldn't be that bad if they weren't so rude towards everyone around. Just a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and weirdos. There are only two "passable" love interests in Ashley and Peggy, but that's also a stretch. They are simply less maddening when compared to others. The protagonist is spineless. As much as I would love to, I couldn't insult anyone, even after being treated like a thrash. I finished the first playthrough in around two hours. Every following route is way faster because you can easily skip most of the text that you saw earlier (female or male, a lot of events are the same). Visuals and Audio The "comic" art style is the strongest part of the England Exchange. As much as I hate the characters' personalities, their portraits and sprites are well done. CGs are also nice. Backgrounds could use some extra work, but I wouldn't call them ugly either. Throwaway music on loop, solid sounds, no voice acting. Technicalities I didn't find any problems. Small plus for giving an in-game option to un-censor certain scenes if you want.
Imo this VN isn't anything groundbreaking or exceptional but I'm surprised by how many negative reviews it has. I enjoyed this game enough to get every ending. Each route has a unique story, and I was pleasantly surprised by the small variations I found by picking different options from playthrough to playthrough. Maybe wait for it to go on sale if the negative reviews are giving you pause, but I'd say this was totally worth what I paid for it (and I've honestly been considering revisiting a couple of my favorite routes).
