Kickstart backer
Overview This review is one where I've actually had to sit and really reflect on whether or not this is a game I've been enjoying. I do want to immediately point out that I am an American player who enjoys historical romance games, such as Ambition: A Minuet in Power and the Hakuoki game series. I believe this clarification is important because the Kickstarter specifies that The Widow's Boutique "is a Norwegian game intended for a Norwegian audience ." Acknowledging that I am part of the unintended audience for an indie studio isn't something I can gloss over out of respect for the developers. But I also feel that it's still important to voice the opinion of a non-Norwegian player who also is willing to buy games like these. Even if my opinion might be seen as null & avoid, I hope that it can be useful in catering to players like me. What I enjoyed The Widow's Boutique is incredibly endearing and unique taking into account of the concept(s), the art style, character developments, etc. Well researched historical games are a dime a dozen making it difficult for conscious and well-informed players to enjoy accurate games. It's an huge reason why I backed the project-- to consume a different cultural and historical story-rich game. I enjoyed the demo because it didn't waste time telling the player directly and indirectly what the game is. It was very upfront, and I respected that wholeheartedly. It was enjoyable because of the pacing. The music transitioned well between scenes and I didn't encounter any bug, which is a HUGE plus in my book! And what I didn't Coming into this, I knew it would be niche, so incredibly so that I was worried that I wouldn't enjoy it. I expected it to have a lasting impression because of how much I could learn from this time period. After the first few days in game, I found the characters to be unmemorable and I felt like I had less emotional agency that didn't fully impact how I felt about the story. The outcomes of my decisions were noticeably different, but I wasn't invested enough to finish. Maybe that has to do with the translations or the simplistic line art that had little to no depth. I also expected that the art from the demo would be revised and polished rather than just copy/pasted. It seems like the crowd funding was used to finish the game as it is rather than to improve upon the overall quality. If that makes sense? Wrapping up my thoughts I wish it was easy for me to precisely point out what improvements could make this game more enjoyable. Concept wise, I think it would be helpful to address the game feel of this product and future ones, especially since I know you guys are planning to make The Desperate Search and launch a Kickstarter for it as well. The Kickstarter for that project if anyone is interested. Balancing the enjoyment of well-informed players (the niche audience that would ride and die for you guys) and those who are ill-informed players is incredibly difficult. I guess the answer relies on what what the devs want out of producing a game like this. Do they want to appeal to a wider audience, giving them more profit? Or do they want to make games for specific audience, solidifying a community of their own design? I'm not sure what I would choose if my game was to be incredibly historically accurate. Hopefully this helps both other potential players and the developers. I always want to see more indie devs thrive and I want say that I was a part of their success-- which is what makes writing this review so difficult, because it feels like this will strongly impact the profits made off of this game. To potential buyers Try it if you're even slightly interested in the game. It's not a terrible game. It's clear from the other reviews that this has an audience, albeit a rather small one. If you enjoy it, then you do (and should write a review). And if you don't, then you can at least say that you gave it a shot. Cheers!

Ahahah! Oh my goodness! This game...! I honestly didn't expect it to be THIS fun. Okay, okay so... From my experience and understanding... I feel like this game is showing you what happens if you do all the "right/honorable" choices and/or "dark underhanded" choices. This is the first time I went against my own morals and actually been very bad. And... It was... Both interesting and painful... Because I would never do that in rl, but...! It's a game... So I am forgiven lol. Well what you do is... This is somewhat of a "go here" and there are "events" and raising relationship points for people and the like. It's NOT HARD! They tell you stuff in the beginning and remind you throughout the game... In case you somehow forgot the simplest of things. The fun part is how far will you take it/go. You see... You can have an early ending by choosing a "romance" option. Marriage. That's not a spoiler..... If you know anything about these kinds of societies back then, you also know what that entails... Which prompts an ending. If you were saving -> You can continue obviously and do more damage than necessary.
Speaking of damage... I became involved with a rather dark association. I gambled my way towards even more money and overheard shady and unspeakable things and did nothing about it. I also made sure to come close to several romance options to ensure I have them wrapped around my finger and have them do as I needed.
Of course that wasn't without consequences and it will all come down to how good you are at "information gathering". I had a blast. A real blast. The kitty is freaking adorable and if you are here for romance? You will finish the game rather early! XD Keep up the good work and love it! Thanks you!!! :) :> =)
The Widow's Boutique is a charming, atmospheric, addictive VN with some equally charming love interests and occasional bits of Dickensian grit and suspense. While you run your boutique in early 1820s Norway, either choosing to be honest and above-board or a sneaky smuggler, you can romance a dashing veteran of Napoleon's armies, a serious Javert-esque customs official, or a wealthy, conniving widow. There's also concerts, masquerades, duels, murders, and the occasional cat stuck up in a tree. I found it a lot of fun. So if you love Jane Austen, the Regency period, or historical romance, consider checking out The Widow's Boutique. The art is great, the frocks are sumptuous and some of the deaths are truly (and literally) chilling. I supported the Kickstarter, and I'm so glad I did. The music has been playing in my head for days!
"The Widow's Boutique" is a fascinating game that takes players on a journey through historical Christiania, allowing them to experience the challenges and triumphs of a business womens life during that time period. The game is designed in a "choose your own adventure" style, giving players the freedom to make their own decisions and shape the outcome of the story. The attention to historical detail in "The Widow's Boutique" is truly impressive, with nice tidebits of historical facts placed into the storylines . As players explore the narrative, they will encounter a range of characters and situations that are both engaging and informative, providing a rich and immersive experience. One of the things that really sets this game apart is its emphasis on empowering players to make their own choices and shape their own destinies. The game is designed to be highly replayable, with multiple paths and outcomes depending on the decisions that players make. This adds an element of excitement and unpredictability to the gameplay, encouraging players to explore new avenues and try out different approaches. Overall, "The Widow's Boutique" is an outstanding game that combines historical accuracy, engaging storytelling, and immersive gameplay. Whether you're a fan of adventure games, history buffs, or simply looking for a fun and engaging way to spend your time, this game is definitely worth checking out. Highly recommended!
This game is SUPER fun and interesting! The first play through I was a little meh about it but when I realized the amount of options and endings, I have been playing about an hour at a time and working through all the opportunities. VERY happy with this!
Had a great experience playing this! I feel I learned stuff, but in a fun way. Being dyscalculetic (having blindness for numbers) I was a bit nervous playing this "customs and trading-game", but it proved both fun and possible. The story is also interesting, although I feel that since I played it "safe" and spent money on ANYTHING (in fear of not being able to pay the bank), I might have missed out on cool story lines and characters. But that is how it goes when you just choose to say: "STAY AWAY FROM ME I NEED TO CONCENTRATE ON PAYING MY DEBTS!" So I guess I might have missed out on a lot of fun! (PS: NEVER thought that I would have fun playing this sort of game, but I did ;) Ended up with TONS of "status" and lots of money, so I felt like I succeeded, all though my character ended up unmarried. THAT is how "boring" I ended up playing. I am very curious on how other people fared and what they experienced. Botttom line: This game is very charming and really makes you think! (It could have been longer though!) BIG bonus is that there is a cat, and you get to interact with it every day. Good choice! :D hehehe Truly recommend this game! Music: As a musician I didnt like the genereic guitar music since it sometimes reminded me of american music. But I understand why the genereic/non-intrusive music was chosen. I would perhaps wanted a more "norwegian" feel to it. Or just a little more time appropriate. Even so the music 'did its thing' and I was entertained.
A clear improvement from the usual historical visual novels. As long as they fix the bug in the Mrs Weissman plot line I am going to give it 5/5 stars.
Un jeu historiquement réaliste et ça fait du bien. Approche originale et beaucoup de différentes fins. Acheté à 4 euros, cela les vaut largement !
An interesting game that makes you empathise with the plight of women of the time frame. Well written with nice art and animations. There appear to be quite a few different endings and paths too. Some of the endings are quiet abrupt but otherwise it is enjoyable while it lasts.
I absolutely love this game. It's such a labour of love both in terms of writing and visuals. It offers different challenges that makes replays very interesting. I love how I'm also learning about the history of Norway, a country that I have learned little of coming from the Netherlands. I hope one day I'll be able to find another treat such as this game. If you like rich storylines, romance and period dramas, this one is for you! It's 100% worth its price and I can't imagine anyone regretting buying it. Do not hesitate, treat yourself to this amazing game! Thank you developers for making a game that has become very dear to me.
