“Sometimes in life, you can find yourself trapped in the darkness. It can become so hard to see past the pain and the trauma, but there’s always a light. Whether that be a person you meet tomorrow or a creative outlet that allows you to bring joy to yourself and others. Never stop searching for those lights. Always remember that even though things may be dark right now, your horizon is just a step away.” -a line from Glass Heart: Retold Note: You can read the full, un-cut review, on the Otome Lovers website Meira Lovingston is the girl with the Glass Heart and has spent her whole life in the hospital.. When she turned 18, she transferred from the pediatric hospital to the one she currently resides in. At the start of the story, Meira is now 21. As the game begins, Meira is told by her doctor, Jay, that she has begun to go into acute heart failure. If she does not begin to improve, she has “four to six months until the damage becomes irreversible.” Luckily, it seems that a donor heart has recently become available. Although, she won’t be able to get the surgery for one month and it only has about 20% for success. During the one month until her surgery, Meira gets to spend that time with one of six men, depending on the choices you make in the prologue. Glass Heart: Retold, is as the name implies, a retold version of the original story. I did play and review the original game, which you can go and read if you’d like. Since I already essentially covered the game, this review is going to be a bit more of a comparison between the two, to help you decide which version you want to get if you can only get one or already have the original. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3532432205
Major Differences
I’ll list the major differences for the game below, if you’re looking for a quick overview. These aren't in any particular order.

New opening, start screen, gallery, nurses finally have eyes, UI
New CGs with a different artist
Option for turning safe spaces off and on is in settings, not asked at the beginning of the game
In the original version of the game, there was a diary that gave you updates as you made progress through the route by choosing the correct choices. This is not in the new version of the game. There is only an option to view the love meter with each LI all on one page.
There is now a “notification” whenever you choose the correct love up option.
New side characters with sprites
Major rewrites to some of the routes with changes to the flow of the story and rewrites for some of the beginning chapters
New opening movie (I cannot figure out how to get this to replay)
The animated sequences where Meira has a voice actor and the CG’s have moving parts, are not in this version.
Meira has a voice actor in CG scenes, but only in Tamaki’s and Jay’s routes at this time.
The sweet and seductive epilogues are not in this version. You can view the CG’s for them in the game files though.
Nathan and Eli have new VA’s
The ending credits movies for this version are the same for all characters. There’s a good ending version and a bad ending version. The original had a unique credits ending for each character.
You can finally hide the UI (except for Meira’s sprite when it’s on screen)
Made in a new game engine, so it has most of the typical Ren’Py engine options and also it makes its own auto-saves
There is no music section to listen to the OST in this version
There is no chapter list to load from in this version, you have to rely on your saves.
Added Achievements (although at this time they won’t show up on your profile)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3532416745
Art and Sounds
The art is the same as the original, with the exception of new sprites and CG’s. This is done by a new artist. It is a bit noticeable, mostly since the style is just slightly different so you can see it when an old sprite and new sprite are standing side-by-side. The characters move around and their lips are open when talking and closed when not. The new movie opening looks good and is well done. Unfortunately, some of the sprites are a bit fuzzy-looking. The backgrounds in the game seem to be the same ones with a good variety. It seems most of them are probably just assets. There may be a few unique ones though that were edited/made for the game. The whole game is voice acted, except for Meira (aside from the few CG scenes she speaks in Jay and Tamaki’s routes). In general the voice acting is done well, but it still is a bit hit and miss for some.
UI and System
Meira now appears on the bottom right as a sprite instead of the left with the options on the bottom. There are now the options for the typical keyboard commands, which means you can now hide the text box. If Meira’s sprite is stil; on the screen, it will still be there even if you hide the rest of the UI. The game also does not close whenever you hit the escape button. Hallelujah! The chapter screens have been changed. Viewing the gallery is a much more streamlined version now. I really liked the unique gallery-view in the original one where it showed all the love interest’s on one screen and you clicked on them to view their gallery (they even said a short line when you clicked).
So…Which version should you buy?
I gave this a lot of serious thought, because both versions definitely have their pros and cons. Having this version made in a different game engine is a major plus. I loaded the original version up to see some of the differences I missed, and my computer had some issues. The steam overlay even had a weird problem. I also found a bug with the diary, and it’s just a bit of a slow game. So this version is definitely a win. On the other hand, this version does not have the sweet and seductive epilogues, which was one of my more favorite aspects of the original game. You can view the CG’s for them in the game files, but it doesn’t quite hit the same as reading the actual epilogue story. I do think the rewriting for this version really helps with the flow of the story more, but it doesn’t feel quite like a definitive version. There are still some things that I feel could have been a bit fleshed out more. Tamaki’s ex was pretty much written out of the story this time, with just a brief mention. Li Liang feels mostly like he’s just there, and then suddenly he’s not. Jay’s route is probably the biggest change in the game. While I like this new version, I did really enjoy the uniqueness that his story in the original version had. Honestly, you could go for either game version and still get a fantastic story, since it still hits all the same beats. Neither of them feel quite like the definitive version, even though I feel like this version was trying to be that. If you have the option, time, and money, you could definitely go for both to experience the differences for yourself. In the end, if you only plan to choose just one, I would lightly suggest this one and just hope that the devs will eventually finish adding in everything to this game. Most of what’s left to be added, is to finish adding in Meira’s voice acting for the CGs in the rest of the routes, and adding in the sweet and seductive epilogues (maybe even a DLC for a Li Liang route 👀). Then it would be a more definitive version. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3532442190 Otome Lovers wishes to thank Eternal Love Studios for providing a free review copy for this game. 4/5。 我对几个ro的偏好大致是jay > brayson > tamaki = will = eli = nathan。
a whimpering puppy desperate to get to his favorite person。
that meal really was delicious. She’d be a good wife
i was in love with the first one now i love this one its amazing when she cried i cried
as a disabled person, the real fantasy isn't all these hot and respectful men pining after one girl, it's having a competent doctor.
The original Glass Heart was great; Glass Heart: Retold is WONDERFUL. The routes are longer and fuller, but they don’t drag. The plots are more refined (I especially love the changes made to the Dr. Moran plotlines). The characters feel deeper and more lovable. Overall, a great improvement, which is saying a lot, because the original was not in any way bad. I love all the extra content, too. The new CGs are so pretty, not to mention the new characters. Li Liang, especially, is my guilty pleasure. He deserves a route of his own, not gonna lie. Even the new (and old) side characters are super enjoyable. Like, Charlotte and X could have their own TV show, and I would watch it nightly. And, of course, the main guys are all still great. Brayson and Tamaki will always be best boys, though. I also like Meira more in this version. She seems more relatable somehow. I would definitely recommend this game to any otome fan. Play it! You won’t regret it, trust me.
I've played the original version before and absolutely loved it. Now that I've played this updated version, I can confidently say I love it even more! The changes and improvements are fantastic. I was a Jay fan in the previous version, and I still am, hehe. The arts, voice acting, and writing are all top-tier. Still hoping for side stories or epilogues for every route since I feel like the ending is a bit rushed.
I rarely leave a comment on a game, however, I felt like I had to this time to say: Oh my lord, I'm so happy this game got a remake! Like every other comments, this game is much deeper with ALL the characters, I enjoyed every second of it! Tamaki, you're still best boy, I love you so much, Breyson and Jay too, hehe. Also... Li Liang... Why side character if hot?! They made a lot of gameplay changes, for exemple, before you couldn't hide the text space to watch the CGS, well now you can thank god. The voice actors went ALL OUT. Jay is the one who got me the most. I think the only thing i'm sad about is the fact there's no charts with all the chapters, bad and good endings for the batchelors. THERE'S NO REMAKE OF THE SWEET AND SEDUCTIVE SIDE STORIES TOO NOOOOOOOOOOO. I hope they will add it in the future, i'm actually begging. I had to content myself after each routes and do the sweet and seductive stories on the OG game, lol.
i was hooked on the original glass heart game, and i can say that this one is also good! the stories for most of the routes are more.. refined and realistic (as any games about a dying girl can be lol). the first game had more lagging and bugs than this one does, and i do enjoy some of the new characters and their VA's. i don't know if this is completely finished and/or if they are going to build more into this, but i did feel that i played this game much faster than the original one? even though the writing and stories were so much better now, it felt shorter somehow. not that i mind though, but that was probably the "biggest" downside to retold as i was expecting a bit more. of course, my favorite still is the sarcastic and charismatic hacker, brayson. his route is my favorite and i just finished it. have done all the good endings and bad endings and the tears came for each one. i recommend this to everyone, it's a nice game with high quality VA's, it's well made. i also recommend people to play the original glass heart game to see and hear the different stories and people.
It's hard for me to give a review without comparing this to the original version but I will try my best. Glass Heart Retold tells the story of a young woman called Meira who thanks to a condition caused her to have a very weak heart at a young age. She has spent the majority of her life living in a hospital with barely any freedom to even leave her room. She has been told that she now has a Heart Donor, which is a good thing because really she needs it. The problem? She has to wait till the end of the month before she can do the procedure and it only has a 20% survival rate. Meira now stuck in a situation that seems too bleak will need to find a way to keep her spirits up until her surgery. Luckily she has 5 ways her life can turn around with the help of another person. Glass Heart Retold is the same in terms of the overall plot of the original game but Retold does a good job in polishing the game and making the plot less tropey and fleshes out each route and the characters. Meira's character shines a lot more in Retold. She is less naive (though still sheltered as much as a person who spent most of her life in a hospital room is) and we can see her in a balance between being very Jaded about her situation yet also yearning to have a life outside the hospital. I liked her in the original but I adore her here. Each route also goes through several levels of rewrite that are mostly an improvement compared to the original and I enjoyed all 6 routes. I can really see the writers really wanted to make this game the best version it can be and it shows. Each route is roughly 2-3 hours long and each route provides a different plotline that are all interesting in their own right that can range from high stakes to angsty. All of the love interests are great as well. I personally love Jay, Brayson and Eli. If there is a gripe I have with Retold that I feel is fair. I am sad that the sweet and spicy after stories are not available in Retold I really loved them and is sad they are gone. Overall, I do recommend this game, especially if you liked the original game.
This game was amazing. I played the original and Retold versions. This game had me smiling, laughing, and sobbing.
