All I can say is, I was very disappointed when playing the game. Maybe its because I had very high expectations for this game, as I had absolutely loved the demo. The art, the horror, and the stories surrounding the characters had me excited for this game, specifically to play Kazuki's route. From what the Demo had suggested, the game was going to explore a story surrounding cultists and Yokai, in a horror game that explores the MC trying to find the truth about her husband's suspicious death, whilst potentially romancing other male leads if she desired. That was the plot the Demo provided, and thus, what I was so so excited for, for like literally a year. I am not kidding. With the lack of horror otome games, I thought that this would become one of my favourite games ever once released, because it fit into concepts that I found so interesting whilst also being an otome. And most of all, I was extremely excited to play Kazuki's route. However, when I finally bought and started playing this game, I was really confused when the first thing that happened was a flashback to people dying and burning, suggesting the story was taking place in some kind of historical past. I was literally like; Wtf? Am I reading a historical revenge otome? But I joked, surely not. None of the Demo or advertisements suggested anything like that, so they wouldn't change the plot midway, right? Anyway, I looked past that, hoping that it will return to the psychological, cult, and yokai horror that I loved about the Demo. Luckily, the first half of the game was very similar to the Demo, and therefore followed the tropes I had expected and wanted. The only thing that annoyed me was that no matter how much I tried to follow Kazuki's route, trying to improve my affection with him in any way, and not choosing any of the other choices with the other love interests, I kept on dying on the night where the MC's mother gave her cake. So, I went to read one of the guides, and come to find out, that well, there is NO KAZUKI ROUTE. Instead, he was part of the secret route, and to achieve it, I have to romance any other guy and attain a good ending with him. ... I was genuinely gobsmacked. My excitement since I first played the demo, down the drain. Like, in the first video advertisement, the first 'love interest' shown was Kazuki himself. And in the demo, you could already 'increase affection' with him, further suggesting that when the full game comes out, you can romance Kazuki just like any of the other love interesets. For the record, I bought this game having absolutely ZERO intention to play any other route besides Kazuki. Nevertheless, I went back to the my save on night 4, and chose to call Ryota, locking him in as my substitude love interest, whilst I grinded through his route to get to Kazuki's ending. What came after was the most boring experience ever. The second half of my gameplay, after the 'cake night,' was so, so different from the core themes the game advertised. It had a completely different vibe, and not in a good way. Like for example, the whole 'calamity in the past' plotpoint felt so unneccessary. And then, we get to the train scene. Oh, how absolutely lovely it was! Haha. Yeah no. The story from here began to follow -1000 gradient, y=mx+c line. And that math description might be more interesting to imagine than the whole 'time loop' and 'past lives' plot points that were shoved at my face as soon as I entered that whole 'lets save ourselves from the time loop' situation that began to exist out of nowhere. I sincerely apologise to the marketing and storyboarding team of this game, but what the heck gave you the idea to market this game as a Yokai/Psychological Horror Otome where we have to find the truth and save our husband from an evil cult (as they whole 'your affection with Kazuki increased' stuff + police saying no body was found suggested that Kazuki was still alive, or if not, a ghost we could romance). Instead I was thrown some bodies are vessels, transmigration loops, repeating lives etc. plotpoints? And the whole 'love you in my previous life' stuff... personally, it is 1 of my most hated tropes. There were so many better and more interesting ways for you to explain and develop the whole cult story, yet the chosen choice was to resort to a stereotypical, rage-inducing, 'everything happened because the MC was stupid in their past life' kind of story. Great. Like the whole plot twist was 'oh the MC rejected this guy who happened to be the brother of her husband in the past, leading him to take revenge to try to get her to choose him in every timeline, and thus he killed her husband to take over his body and hopefully woo her in the process and oh also, apparently Ren killed Kazuki and Ryota was also someone from MC's past life, and her mum was really not her mum'. So basically, all of the new plot points that were supposed to explain everything were thrown at me in a horribly confusing and badly explained manner, thus becoming the epitome of succesful ragebait. Guess thats an achievement. Then the gameplay. All it included was clicking through the MC's yapping sesh that seemed endless, which I guess is what a visual novel basically is. However, paired with the horrendous story, it took way too long. Like I genuinely spent half of my gameplay time for Ryota's route clicking through the boring dialogue sequences in the train. Then, the whole metafictive and 'breaking the fourth wall' aspects. Yeah, well, what was the point of that again? To force me to play through a continuous loop of Ryota flirting with me whilst the background cycled from his bedroom to a random grass hill, as a way to get my gametime up? Yeah, I nearly ragequit right there, however luckily I went back to the guide, which said that EVENTUALLY I will get through the loop. How entertaining. Then, after hours of boredom and near rage-quitting, I got to the Kazuki's secret ending. YAYYYY. Well I hoped. Instead, again, I was bombarded with metafictive questioning and back again to the whole time loop plot, and blah blah blah Omukade blah blah. That Kazuki was only a catalyst, and nothing I can do can ever work. And yeah, calling me 'MC' directly was such an interesting point in the script, definitely made me love how metafictive the story was. No but seriously, it is one thing having one or two metafictive moments to entice or scare the audience. It is another to completely overwhelm the original storyline with it in every fking moment. And then, I give up, so I just stab myself, leading me to getting reincarnated as Ryota, the apparent true, 'THE END' ending. Guess thats one way to make a cyclical narrative. Maybe, the whole point of this game was to be a nihilistic view on love; that you can never get a truly happy ending, that there is no purpose in it. Otherwise, I have no idea why there was any purpose in making the second half of the story so anticlimatic, unninteresting, and so so deviating from the plot that was advertised. Well, the whole 'unhappy endings can happen' moral of the story has already been taught to me by Lalaland, unfortunately for the storywriter. I came here to go down a potentially angsty romance path with my dead husband who got killed by a cult and get scared by a few yokai, nothing more. God, if I ever die and get the opportunity to be reincarnated, please reincarnate me into this novel so I can strangle that damn Omukade and spray insect repellent on her. Overall, I am still kind of hoping that this game is all a bad dream, and tomorrow I will wake up and be able to play the game that I had anticipated for so long, instead of being forced to follow a route I was uninterested in, with an equally dissapointing overarching story and 'endings.' So, I can easily say I will not be playing any other routes. Best wishes for the development team, and hope that they have success with this and subsequent games, however it was most definitely not for me.
So I did finish this game, but it somehow still feels like I didn't. I got all the CGs, I got all the good endings, I tried a few bad endings and I spoke to a lot of NPCs and visited all the locations in different order/at different times of night. But something feels undiscovered still. In Lover's Enigma, our protagonist's husband died 3 months prior to the story. It was more a marriage of convenience to prevent MC's mother from harrassing her to find love. However, the two were friends and so now MC is living in limbo, unable to find joy in life and just passing each day meaninglessly. Though she doesn't believe his death was a suicide, his body hasn't been found and she takes it upon herself to continue the investigation. The story involves three other characters that you can team up with to solve the mystery and multiple endings. As a mild spoiler, the game is plot > romance and
whilst there are declarations of love, there is no kiss CG. The most we get is a hug CG in Ryota's route.
As is typical for me, the mystery of the game really kept me going. I was so drawn in by what secrets the town held that I just wanted to keep going and going to understand what was happening - and usually I find myself waning after the mystery is uncovered - luckily with this it was well-crafted and so tense that I still wanted to continue after it had been unravelled. The guide for this game has the route order as Haruki, Ren and then Ryota and I would agree that is the best order to learn about the mystery of Kazuki's death. The game has really attractive art - the backgrounds are realistic and look screentoned as to fit in with the sombre atmosphere of the town; it feels both realistic and comical, adding to the absurdity of some of the characters and the horror that occurs. There are some 3D modelled parts and then 2D animation/sprites. I liked the character sprites though they do cut off at the leg so when they move sometimes you can see that, and the CG artwork is full colour and sometimes animated. There are also full-animation sequences to reveal the background of the town and protagonist and some of her dreams/memories. I really liked mood-breaking gags that occur in Haruki's route. I loved the UI for the menu which was a flip phone. It did make it a bit harder to see the chat history as the screen is so small, but navigating the menu was so much fun, as well as the DDR-esque sanity-raising minigame. I even found the slot-machine dialogue event interesting. The characters were all really compelling, I loved unravelling the story with each of them and while I do find it hard to choose a favourite, I think my route ranking is
secret=Ryota > Haruki > Ren
. I really enjoyed the suffocating stress of trying to deal with the protagonist's mother, the terrifying cult members cornering MC wherever she goes and the dismissive police officers. Together it all added to a terrifying mystery. There's no voice acting in the game but there's some background music and lots of sound effects. I did get tired of some of them (like during the slot machine "win"). The characters have different toned beeps for their voices too which was cute. The only real gripes I have with this game is that the text-speed at max is not instant, and that there skip function doesn't have a setting to continue after choices - you just need to keep hitting tab or control. The other issue is that in all three endings, the dialogue is exactly the asme but it's read as 'new' as you are on a new route so you need to click through it again... ugh. Lover's Enigma is a really great game and it will not be easily forgotten. Scary, disgusting and overall tragic and bittersweet.
I really wanted to love this game but after finding out I really completed the whole game I was left with "thats it?" So many questions, plot points, and set ups left untouched and left bare boned. The omukade does a horrendous job of actually executing his motivation to make a FL his. Hes literally just "You're the reason this is happening, you promised to love me, so love me." And no actions taken. Like brother you have her husband's body and you dont even try to fool her? You dont try to make advances on her emotions for the body you hold? The option to turn off jump scares was exciting to me but after only getting 2 attempts where only 1 got me...I really thought there'd be more or something better with an option like that. If I had to be honest I loved the game at first and tried to ignore the voice in the back of my mind that was saying " this way of dismissing big details, making some conflicting statements, repeating information in a repetitive way, and making me ask my self "does this make sense or did miss something in all my playthroughs?" Could this game have been written with AI? I used to rp with Ai and thought it was cool until I began to recognize and understand all of its patterns and lackings with writing. Not saying this game used it im saying that this game felt like such a nothing burger when it introduced so many cool and interesting ideas yet did next to nothing with them.
Genuinely so worth my money, This game has so much thought and effort (AND AMAZING WRITING) put into it and I am so happy to be able to dig into this game. it was so immersive! every single person in the main cast (MC and Yoko included, of course) are so human like they're so grounded in reality despite the fantastical elements of the vn (actually, the fantastical storyline ACTUALLY helps in fleshing them out even more). there's so many choices available and different endings to get, I love saving and exploring each option (i'm not even done with half the routes by the time I'm writing this!) I absolutely adore the fact that there's so many options that you don't even know which ones would affect anything (it makes every choice feel so very weighted ifykwim and I LOVE THAT FACT SM!). Though I would say that sometimes the romance felt a bit surface-level? BUT still well-developed! and sometimes the dialogue doesn't match the characters. But I think these are all forgivable at times because this is genuinely a fun game overall! I did not know how this game would play out when I started supporting this game since what 2024? SO I genuinely came into this game blind thinking it would be quite normal or stereotypical but no?!!?!!!! it;s so different from what I expected and I am so glad with the direction the team took!!! It was like a breath of fresh air - it was giving me excitement, humor, horror, thriller, romance, delight, and dread actually! and those elements were so well-balanced! The black and white aesthetic and art of this game really give this vn such a unique atmosphere (like actually, the illustrations from day 3 onwards WOW it gave me thriller horror) + it makes the colored illustrations hold so much more weight (I stare at each cg for like 3 mins anytime it appears! which is plentiful, first playthrough I got 31 cgs already!) The sprites of each character is so them! it was so much fun seeing their reactions to different choices. (I especially love the illustration of Ren when he realized the cinema was closed down!) God I have to discuss the atmosphere, it really knows how to keep me on edge and the art just helps it even more (I had nightmares after my first ending, but maybe I'm just a scaredy-cat but I ADORE horror and this game does it very well without overshadowing any other elements). what also helped in creating the creepy atmosphere were the glitchy effects & texts AND the sfx. I love the sfx of the game, it really helped me get immersed into the writing and the world. It really made you feel on edge, especially during very tense moments. I genuinely recommend anyone interested in story-driven (very choice-driven too) vns to try this because WOW! this game blew my mind!! I can NOT wait to play more of this and see the teams' future works too!
A lovely game made by a lovely team of people. It's a very creepy game (you can toggle off the really spooky stuff if you're not into that, but the overall vibe is eerie and existential regardless) and it felt very exciting to play. The whole time, I wanted to figure out what is going on with this girl and unravel the secrets of their universe. I love the art styles used to create the atmosphere of mystery and insanity and isolation. I love this game so much, I hope more people will buy it and support the devs (they worked so hard on this and it's super clear that they put a lot of love into their game) <3 <3 <3
Personally, I'm not huge on dating sims but I found myself getting very immersed in the plot itself. I've only played Ren's route so far and got surprisingly attached to his character. Everyone is more than they seem and it's interesting to see the curveballs the game throws at you, both in regards to the story and the scares.
Loved it, great art style, lovely characters that all felt like real people with their own personalities and very dark and spooky.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING AND GORGEOUS, WORDS CANT DESCRIBE IT!!!!!! The well written story, deep and emotional character writings really makes you feel what the story is conveying this game isn't js romance imo, it feels deeper than it looks. It's heartbreaking in some parts but its beautiful, i dont know how to description it but give this game a chance it deserves<3
