About
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: By purchasing the game, you actually get two games now: 1) The original The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, 2) The Unreal Engine 4 remaster called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux. Please see The Astronauts website for details.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.
Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.
Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance -- and the fate of his family.
Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.
Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter spins a captivating mystery set in the off putting yet beautiful Red Creek Valley. With a storyline centered on Ethan's disappearance, the game keeps players engrossed through clever puzzles that unravel the mystery. While the ending delivers a satisfying conclusion, the ease of overlooking puzzles can denture from the overall experience. It's a solid 7 out of 10 for those who enjoy a good mystery horror at an easy pace.
If you buy this, you get the original version and the remastered version with Unreal engine. I played the Redux first, since it performed better, and getting it done first, then finish the original one off, then write this review. This game does not hold any hand at all, you have a semi-open world to tranverse around by yourself, trying to find clues around the world and make connections to solve the mini-mysteries that lead up to one big mystery. Bear in mind, while this is mainly walking simulator, the tag in this game have "Horror" and there is an aspect that is an horror in this game, I'm not a fan of horror games and I braved out the horror aspect of this game, and I felt that it is not necessary at all, because the puzzle in there is tricky already. So for those that are interested in this game, but on the fence with the horror aspect due to health condition or generally just hate horror games, it may be worth for you to go on the internet and do research on what horror aspect it is and see if it's something you can get through yourself or not, before you buy this game. I got this game on the sale, £1 and some changes, for the two versions, the remastered one is absolutely worth the sale price, it is a short game indeed, and I speedran the original version (experienced some lags though, unlike the redux version) just to tick off the achievements and be done with this story. The story is a mystery but very dark as well. But the world map is absolutely beautifully designed and it helped balance out the horror and eerieness of the story. Aside from that one horror aspect, I really enjoyed playing this game, it made me sat down and just, think about the game and the story, and make connections to make it make sense. Lots of names to get through and the relations so there's some brain noggin moments! This game is for you if you: Are OK with horror, likes walking simulator, very patient with finding the clues, making connections, deducting what happened in the scenes, and is OK with the dark story and the gores. It is definitely not an easy walking sim game due to absolutely no hand-holding. I feel that the story is worth it for me, personally.

Good game with a sad story. Pros; -Good story -gameplay is good -fun to explore -short game if you like that Cons; -short game -hard to find mine entrance -some buggy spots like getting the unfinished story achievment.
was fun to play with my partner. ending was somewhat unsatisfying, but enjoyed graphics, atmosphere and the narrative up until that point.
Amazing game. Amazing atmosphere and amazing music. Absolutely good. I love it. Kind of sad not playing this sooner...
9/10
I played the original version and tried to get all the achievements but it bugged out in the part where the scuba diver was supposed to appear. I restarted a new game in the redux version and sped ran it with all achievements in under an hour and a half. Honestly enjoyed it even more during my second playthrough. 10/10. So good I played it twice in a row.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is an interesting “little” game. First of all because it is hard to say, what kind of game it is. I would describe it as a walking*-simulator-with-murder-mystery-elements-against-a-cosmic-horror-backdrop. (*Luckily, they included the option to run...) As detective/investigator Paul Prospero you explore Red Creek Valley to find the name giving Ethan Carter, a boy who wrote to some letters to you that got your attention. While walking the valley you encounter several mysteries and places were people died. By looking at the surroundings you discover clues that tell you parts of the story. This is about all one can tell without spoiling to much of the fun. The mechanics are nice, finding the clues and combining them is done in a great manner, it is entertaining but not “a-pain-in-the-ass” difficult. You are clearly here for the story and especially the scenery. Man, the scenery. I wish there was more to do or it was used in a game that was more “lived in” it is marvelous. The two things that bothered me were a) the fact that they limited your walking space in some cases quite obvious an that took me out of the emersion and b) that the auto-save function, that is the only save function in the game is unclear (at first), not marked and has some minor flaws. Its not overly dramatic but it was a nuisance. Personally, I am not sure if I am fond of the ending, but the game is worth playing and deciding for yourself. But maybe not for the full price – for all its interesting aspects and the entertainment it brings, for that money it is a little too short… So by it at a good discount and enjoy!
