About
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: By purchasing the game, you actually get two games now: 1) The original The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, 2) The Unreal Engine 4 remaster called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux. Please see The Astronauts website for details.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.
Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.
Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance -- and the fate of his family.
Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.
Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

The story was actually really well done and extremely relatable. The graphics are ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. The puzzles are nice but I only enjoyed like maybe 2 of them. The only way to progress the game really is to look everywhere which is kind of the main way you solve puzzles and move forward. However, while the visuals were amazing and the story was excellent, I beat the game in just 3 hours, like I was like "oh wait that was it?" but I didn't really want more, like the story felt complete, my only problem was that except 1 puzzle, the rest weren't fun really. Yeah it's mostly a walking sim which is fine, Idm walking sims if there are a lot of things to explore. At first, the world feels really big but once you see that there's only like 2 houses, 1 church and just a path to follow, it really starts to feel like there ain't much to explore after all. Idk I'm conflicted with this one. 10/10 on Story and Graphics but gameplay, I give it a 6/10 at best although, I do still recommend it, cause the game has a lot to love.

In The Vanishing of Ethan Carter who are playing as a "detective" trying to find this kid, Ethan. You'll actually find more horrific stuff about what really happened with him and his family. You'll have to figure this out through clues and different items that will help you reconstructing past events that occurred. It is also a beautiful game with great landscapes and warm colours. Also, it has a lot of interesting easter eggs that you can find if you look patiently. You can play it for the story or maybe you like walking simulators with beautiful landscapes. Try it!
Genuinely beautiful game — the map design is stunning, the game design is thoughtful, and the story pulls you in properly. This is a well-crafted experience. One real gripe though: I was 80% through the game before I actually figured out the core mechanic for solving the cases. Had to start over from scratch. And with no manual save option, that wasn't a quick fix — that was losing hours. The tutorial-by-discovery approach works until it doesn't, and here it cost me a full replay.
One of the most fun times I've had in recent memory, and from a walking sim nontheless! I really enjoyed the game's story and the detective parts, even if they were a tad bit too easy for my taste. Even though the game doesn't really give you any hints on what you should do, it does give a few subtle hints towards what you should do! (and sometimes it just shows you where to find the thing you need) Unless you're as stupid as some of the negative commenters were, you should have a really fun time with this one. A few "spoilers" I'd like to give before you buy this tho: 1. The game is rather short, with me only taking 4 hours to beat the game to its fullest(with all of the side achievements too). Again, I think the game is totally worth it full price, but you should totally wait for a sale if you think the price/hour ratio ain't worth it. 2. Despite the game mainly being a walking sim, there is 1 jumpscare to be vary of. Said jumpscare is located in the mines where you see the "Do Not Enter" letter. (I'm only putting this one here for those who just can't handle jumpscares) 3. The game requires an active use of yer brain! So in case you're a bit dense when it comes to them puzzles, you might wanna skip this one. And that's it for me! Wish ya a wonderful rest of your day!
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a beautiful narrative experience that has made me feel a way that no other game has. The graphics are out of this world, better than any game I've played, made better with the amazing soundtrack. Both compliment the magical game world perfectly, making the game world feel so real, forgotten in the past. The story of the game, will not all agree, is incredible in my opinion. Playing through it the first time is an experience you will only have once, and after you finish the tragic tale and look back at the intricacies of the story, through the notes, clippings, and small details, the story feels even more real and heartbreaking. While the experience may be short, it is something nobody should pass up if you are intrigued by it.
Really lovely story and the way the investigations are done make this game so much fun. I enjoyed the whole experience
