About
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: By purchasing the game, you actually get two games now: 1) The original The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, 2) The Unreal Engine 4 remaster called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux. Please see The Astronauts website for details.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.
Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.
Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance -- and the fate of his family.
Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.
Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

Beautiful graphics and great open game-flow, puzzles well-constructed, great creepy feel to it all..enjoying it immensely thus far.
I was excited to play this game (I usually love games like this) it was a great idea but poorly executed. You can't have a game this big with no map to look back on so you know where you are or where you need to be. No way of keeping track of what you have completed so far and is left to complete while in game. You are just wandering nearly aimlessly hoping to find a clue. Without a walkthrough video playing this game is impossible to finish before you get frustrated, if you have the patience to look at trees, rocks and trails for hours and barely getting anything accomplished game wise in that time then this is for you.

Bit confusing, but nice, well apart from uncle lmao.
Murder mystery walking simulator with occult themes (ghosts, clairvoyance, alchemy) and references to macabre literature such as Lovecraft and Poe. I played the Redux version, which took about 5 hours to beat while exploring very thoroughly. Would recommend playing in one sitting. Despite its influences, I was surprised by how dark the story got, especially in contrast with the beautifully serene game environment. I never quite knew what it would throw at me next. Even though this is squarely in "walking simulator" territory, I enjoyed how interactive the world was. Compared to other walking simulators, I enjoyed this far more than Dear Esther, which I found forgettable; somewhat more than Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, which bears many similarities such as a hyper-detailed environment but with relatively Abrahamic themes; and somewhat less than SOMA, which is a masterpiece. Original versus Redux: The differences are subtle, but the Redux version has some minor lighting changes and smoother, more reflective water. Which is "better" is largely up to personal preference. However, the Redux has TSAA (which looks incredible) and the controls seem much tighter. I personally recommend the Redux. Major Ending Spoilers:
While I enjoyed the story as a whole, I cannot decide whether I like the "it was all in his head" ending or not. I was expecting something that would elevate the story's emotional meaning, like some grand revelation, but instead it emphasized that the characters just have mundane, lonely lives and that Ethan was simply trying to cope creatively. I guess the sudden descent from macabre fantasy to harsh reality left a bittersweet taste. Reminded me of Bridge to Terabithia in a way.
TL;DR: If you like walking simulators and occult mysteries, you will probably like this.
Short but engaging story with an interesting twist. Good atmosphere. Score: 7/10
Very interesting and laid back story game with a cool twist at the end. Neat little rainy day game if you can get in a sale
I did not like it
4 hours long exploration and mystery game. Pretty good ambiance sounds and good story. Give your 4 hours, you won't regret.
