this is a short mobile game ported to pc years later, and while it'd be mostly fine to quickly play through if you like 1st-person point & clicks, its many technical issues, some more serious than others, stop me from recommending it. the game starts in a house, you have to escape and find out what happened to the kelley family and help them while you're there. the story and the family's background are revealed through scattered diary pages and objects found in the various rooms. puzzles range from using items to mixing colors, finding out codes, or doing the sliding or piano puzzles no adventure game can do without, unfortunately. some of them are pretty good, some not so much. the graphics are hand-drawn and charming, the music is okay, but I found some of the sound effects annoying. separate volume sliders are available, but volume goes up and down as you walk around and resets to max every time the options menu is accessed. no full screen option, alt+enter doesn't work either, there's only a resizable window, the size of which resets every time you start the game. and start it you will many times, as it freezes randomly but constantly while moving from one room to another. it's a known bug, but apparently can't be fixed, just like the rest of the issues, because of technical limitations. no real progress is lost on exit, as the game saves all the time, but when I had to restart 3 or 4 times just during the mandatory labyrinth section towards the end, where it actually puts you back a few rooms, I gave up for good. I would've persevered otherwise, as much as I hate mazes and labyrinths, but it was getting ridiculous. the game should take about an hour and I had to restart it at least 8 or 10 times before even finishing it. further issues include no steam overlay, no way to take screenshots with f12, no exit button in the main menu, where one of the other buttons does nothing, and as I mentioned, clicking on options resets volume settings. the game is also littered with typos and bad grammar. I'm not too critical about this if the developers aren't native speakers (and they aren't), though it's one thing they can and will actually fix somewhat, as I wrote the biggest ones down, but the game's been out on mobile for years, so it's pretty hard to accept. I watched the final few minutes on youtube just to get some closure, I was pretty close to the end anyway, and if it could and would be fixed, it might be worth a quick playthrough for a dollar, but in its current state you're better off not bothering with it. I hope their next game will be a huge improvement.
More interesting reviews on Fenol Baron Approves Curator Page
Quite a good, albeit extremely short in duration, adventure, which is very much hindered by technical malfunctions. A fairly standard beginning of the plot - we find ourselves in an unusual house full of mysteries and mandatory notes (where without them), and gradually get to the bottom of what is happening. You should understand the very modest capabilities of the creators, so you should not expect any supernatural heights from the game. I liked the visual component, the interesting graphic style complements the surroundings well, the hand of a talented painter is visible. There are not so many puzzles, they are quite logical and solved with pleasure. The only thing that is really missing is at least some indication of active objects (at least when you hover the mouse over them), because in several places you are literally lost in what you need to do now. I also liked the logic of entering puzzles into the design of the house, their presence was almost always given a logical explanation, which had a good effect on the general atmosphere. But the technical side of the project does not reach the above - we are almost immediately met by the lack of a fullscreen mode, and already in the game itself there are some strange bugs that tightly hang the game. It’s good that the autosave system operates here, otherwise it would be very bitter, but this negative point needs to be polished and it must be done. As for the debut, the game turned out to be not bad, albeit with flaws in the form of the raw technical side of the project, it remains only to wish further development of your ideas.
This would have been your run-of-the-mill adventure-lite with its cute graphics and casual puzzles if not for the bugs that are, apparently, unfixable. The set-up is fairly simple and familiar to those who enjoy games on the casual side - you find yourself in a house with a single diary page asking you for help. It’s not quite clear what exactly happened at the beginning (all you know that there was Kelley family there and now they are…not), but as you go along and collect dairy pages, a barebones story emerges as to what exactly transpired. The hand-drawn visuals are, perhaps, the best asset of the game and add a nice little touch breaking up a static picture that looks like a calling card of a hidden object adventures. To call “The Spirits of Kelley Family” point and click would be a stretch, by the way, as while there are no HO scenes, this is still very much a casual game. The puzzles are, for the most part, easy and largely involve simple inventory manipulations with occasional slider/maze/pipes variation. Finding out, as the developers put in the description, “what the hell has happened to Kelley family” will take about an hour -the ending is anticlimactic, but does tie everything together (although there’s a hint to something more sinister going on that doesn’t really work for an overall tone of the game). The music has nice ambient compositions going but tends to fluctuate as you travel from room to room, which is not a big “down” factor, but a relatively minor note. Kinda of like not having a full-screen mode. Now onto the bugs. The game consistently locks up. There is an autosave option, so it does save your progress while you’re forced to quit, but I have restarted the game around 10 times during an hour of playtime and that got very annoying by about 4th restart. Apparently, system on which this game was built (this is a port from mobile, by the way) is now too obsolete to make any kind of serious bug fixes, so the state of game consistently locking up is pretty much there to stay. Steam overlay doesn’t work and will remain in this “state” as well. There are tons of grammatical errors in English translation – usually not an issue if there are few, but quickly become immersion-breaking (or the attempt on immersion) as they pile on. Not sure if the original game also had both languages in-game or it’s a fresh addition just for the port, but there’s a possibility of this being fixed somewhere down the line, hopefully. “Spirits of Kelley Family” had a potential of being your middle-of-the-road short casual adventure – the kind you’d enjoy for an hour of gameplay it gives you and move on to something else, quickly forgetting what you just played but still having a feeling of it being quite pleasant experience; but multiple technical difficulties, many of which are unfixable, make it a questionable purchase to say the least. Yes, you can finish this game with multiple restarts, but the struggle is simply not worth it.
A bad port that crashes every few moments. Frustrating and not worth the price even on sale. Short game, not very interesting story.
I really loved this game! I was looking for a fun point&click game and the Spirits of Kelleys Family really delivered. I especially appreciated the drawing style which really goes well with the mysterious and fun aspects of the story. The game seems to find the right balance and results challenging to finish, while not being excessively difficult. I can totally recommend it to anybody interested in points&click games, this one will keep you entertained for several hours.
Unfortunately, the game crashes every 2 minutes while playing on Windows. Couldn't even see the end scenes of the game. Please fix this bug asap.
This is a short click and point game. It does have a small story. It does have a few puzzles as well. The book shelf puzzle made no since to me. I did have a problem where the game would not load the new area of the house. I had to get out of the game and come back into the game at least eight times. I give this game a 6.5/10
