The Puppet of Tersa (episode 1) - is a lighthearted point&click adventure that takes about 2 hours to complete, although it's obviously not a finished story. I would compare the tone of this game to something like Anna's Quest , it has that dark fantasy theme going, but it's a kid friendly game in general. That being said, the store page should be updated to inform us about the nature of the episodes (is it free or paid DLC?). I bought several episodic adventure games that never got finished, so that is something to consider when you buy a game in parts. I have played through the first episode and it was above average when it comes to this genre, but I did run into couple of glitches. So far the devs were very fast with the patches, fixing achievements and updating the puzzles on the first day. They were open to feedback back in the demo, even including a few of my ideas, so I don't have any reason to believe that game won't improve. When it comes to adventure games I am looking for good narrative, fun characters, immersive soundtrack and intuitive puzzles. This game has at least 3 of the 4, the puzzles being a bit sketchy. I think about 80% of the puzzles in this game were designed well, the other 20% need a little bit of 'intuitive' rework. For example, you might figure out an obvious solution to the puzzle, you might even have a correct item for it, but you missed a line of dialogue which is required to progress. So make sure that you talk to all of the characters multiple times, and they could have new options between the puzzles. You can also show items to your hungry companion which may or may not give you a clue. Aside from that, I very much enjoyed the story from start to finish. It has a creative world, characters with cool personalities and a few decent jokes.
Pros:
+ enjoyable dialogue & characters + beautiful environments & soundtrack + most of the puzzles were very creative + achievements
Cons:
- I had a few small glitches - a few puzzles could use intuitive updates Overall Thoughts (episode 1): 7/10 The game is unpolished at the time of this review but the developer has been responding to issues very quickly, so I would not discourage anyone from buying it. I think episode 1 was pretty good aside from technical problems, if they manage to finish the story I would be happy to play more. The Puppet of Tersa is a charming episodic adventure game set in a fantasy world. The games hand-drawn graphics and bizarre characters grant a unique and enjoyable experience for all adventure and puzzle game enthusiasts. Pros + Beautiful hand-drawn graphics and aesthetics. + Immersive and whimsical story-telling told through the innocent eyes of a child whilst incorporating darker themes. + Lots of objects to interact with. + Abundance of character dialogue. + Active developers responding to community feedback Cons - No voice overs for any dialogue - Nitpick Short game length of approximately 2 hours for the first episode. - Nitpick Lack of difficulty in puzzle progression.
Story
Episode one begins and you are introduced to the protagonist, an ordinary and innocent young girl named Cynthia. Shortly after this brief introduction, you find yourself transported far from reality and into the depths of an unknown, peculiar world. This extravagant new world is littered with strange looking beings that look like they belong in old children's fairy tales. Early on, you become acquainted with the most adorable fairy-like creature who will remain by your side for the remainder of the episode and aid you in completing tasks. The main goal is to escape this intriguing yet frightening world and return to the safety of your home ... however, this is not as easy as it seems.
Gameplay
The point and click gameplay consists of what many adventure addicts are accustomed to, puzzles! The puzzles featured are not challenging nor overly easy however I would like to see more progression in the difficulty as the episodes continue. The puzzles are varied and range from putting items in the correct order to untangling cords and so forth. The other majority of the time, if not completing puzzles, will be spent speaking to the various characters scattered throughout the map. Conversing with the characters will enable progression through the game and also lead the player in the right direction on how to complete a specific task. The game has complete and easy to read English subtitles with no faulty grammar
Characters
Each character is unique and has their own mannerisms. It is evident that ample time was spent on crafting these personas and the way they speak which makes conversing with them quite enjoyable. It seems to me like a lot of inspiration was taken from children's movies or fairy tales and this has been mixed in with some darker overtones. This combination creates an array of interesting dialogue and I look forward to future characters in the upcoming episodes.
Graphics
The most eye-catching aspect of this game is by far the beautiful graphics and attention to detail. The artistic digitally painted design is immaculate and engrosses the player into a child-like atmosphere, just with a darker twist.
Sound
Although there is no audio voice overs for any of the dialogue, the soundtrack does wonders for the game and further compliments the story-telling. It is also available for purchase as DLC.
Bugs and glitches
I did not encounter any glitches and had seamless gameplay. Upon reading through posts in the discussion page, it seems the developer is working hard to patch any bugs that arise which is fantastic.
Price and content
This first episode is adequately priced at $9.95 for approximately two hours of gameplay. The story will be spread over 5 episodes with each episode looking to be sold separately, however the developers are still considering their options.
Conclusion
Being Madorium's first published point and click game is commendable and the effort that has gone into the Tersa series is considerable. I look forward to see where this bizarre world will take Cynthia and am eager to explore more of this imaginative realm in future episodes.
More interesting reviews on Fenol Baron Approves Curator Page
"The Puppet of Tersa" tells us the story of a little girl Cynthia, who through a hole in the floor gets into a strange magical country, inhabited by extremely unusual creatures and obeying some of their laws of logic. The game’s surrealism immediately arouses interest, everything is done in a very bizarre style, all the creatures seemed to have left the pages of children's dark fairy tales, almost everything can be interactively touched, the game world is very lively and rich. The screenshots are not deceiving, the graphics in the game are really excellent, yet the hand-painted drawing does its job, as if any picture begins to breathe the intentions that were in the artist's head. It should immediately be said that the game has a very short duration (about 2-3 hours), and that this is only the first of five planned episodes, I did not know about it, so I was extremely surprised when the game suddenly ended in the most interesting place. There are not many puzzles either, they are quite traditional for our genre and do not cause any particular difficulties. But what causes difficulties is the fact that in some places the game behaves very unintuitively and it is extremely difficult for the player to guess what is required of him now (I had 3 moments) There are few such places, but they are present, which is impossible to tell. It is difficult to judge the plot (again, we remember that the game is short), so all the knots of the script are only tied, but so far the impression is pleasant, but we need to see what will happen in the next episodes. This game definitely has a soul, one feels that the creators want to make it very warm and bright, as long as they succeed, we look to the future with hope.
Just got done playing and I loved it. I've never played a point a click adventure all the way through and this one kept me entertained the entire time. The art / music is amazing and the puzzles are a ton of fun !!!
A delightfully weird, hand drawn point and click adventure. Explore Tersa, a world full of strange animals and plants. Solve puzzles, enjoy really good sound design. This is solid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sz3I8TtQ9e8
I really love the art style and the amazing story its telling. 10/10 worth getting it
I played the demo of this and loved the graphics and style of the game and was looking forward to it coming out. It's proper itched my discword and indiana jones point and click adventure game itch and I'm enjoying it so far. The graphics are lush and some of the dialogue has had me chuckling away as I play. The story so far is good and makes me want to discover more of this world of tersa to see what other creatures I shall discover. I mean come on what other game can you play where there is a creature who wears a yellow bucket and has an ice cream container on their head. You can check out my series on it below if you like as I'm doing a walkthrough series https://youtu.be/Z10ca-PM-Ws
What a wonderful gem to find. This is such a lovely balance of nostalgia and satisfying new ideas that I want in a point and click adventure. I sincerely hope more games are coming from this creator.
