Decent game for a 1 day play. Felt like it tried some things that remind me of Super Metroid. Only thing that came off annoying is the knockback stun and falling off platforms so often as a result. Especially during the post final boss fight while rocks fall through platforms and seem to auto target you every time while you are attempting to reach the helicopter for finish the game.
Not really worth playing unless you have a metroidvania itch you need to scratch and you've played all the other high-profile titles. First off, enemy speed is tied to the framerate and there's no in-game adjustment, so lock your monitor's refresh rate to 60FPS if you want a playable experience. Increased enemy density is an issue in later areas of the game, and that issue is compounded when some of those enemies hit like a truck. Further adding to the frustration, when you die, you leave your health, gear, and upgrades behind in a reanimated corpse and need to find your way back to it and kill it with just 99 health and your starter weapon. This all seems fair until you die in an area of the map with a lot of respawning enemies (crows, mummies, etc). If you die again before reaching your gear, your corpse gets reanimated again, and you'll have to fight off another reanimated corpse in addition to the original as well as all the enemies in that area to get to it. This problem compounds with subsequent deaths, and almost ended my run near the end of the game. I think this mechanic itself is okay but maybe limiting it to just one corpse and wherever you last died at would make this a lot more tolerable and forgiving if you die in a hard to reach area. The game itself is very short, you can complete it in just a few hours if you're patient enough to slog through it, and add another hour or so for 100% completion. At $20, I'd wait for a sale if you plan on buying it.
Get it on sale and it's honestly a good & short Metroidvania to pass the time with.
I heard some really good things about this game. Looking at screenshots, the pixel art looks amazing. The soundtrack is even great, I love looking at and listening to this game. The big problem is how much of a chore it feels like to play. There are entirely way too many enemies that move so quickly, you can't even hit them half the time. You need a powered up weapon if you plan on taking many of them out the first time you see them as they fly on and off the screen. The huge problem with this is how much is going on the screen and how much platforming you have. The game is incredibly punishing in the sense that you will be jumping back and forth on the same platform to avoid enemies since you can't kill them quickly enough. If you're lucky, you might be able to hit them a couple times as they fly across the screen way too quickly to aim, you mostly spam in their general direction. You go hit? Too bad, the knock back will push you off the tiny platform you have to wait to rise and you start your journey through the room all over again. I've had that happen entirely way too many times from enemies that come at you so quickly from an angle that you can't even aim at that I got so frustrated I just quit. If I had a chance at killing these enemies, fine, I'd deal with them that way. But since you can only aim in 8 directions, you better hope an enemy is coming from one in order to hit them. Many of them can home attacks in you but you can't do it back to them. It's just needlessly difficult. Oddly enough, the first boss is really big so it's easy to hit. The boss fight was actually fun while the whole journey to the boss felt like a test of patience rather than skill. Furthermore, if you die, you lose all your gear and have to return with just your starter gun from the last save point. Was it a pain to reach that far before you died? Of course it was! Well guess what? Now you get to do it again with even worse gear than before and hope you don't die along the way. Don't let the great art style fool you. The game looks great with a great soundtrack, but playing it is just not fun.
Soundtrack is vibin and pixels are solid. Gameplay is lacking. Demastered too much for my taste. They tunnel visioned on nostalgia bait and skipped half of century of evolution of QoL thought.
