VERY faithful to the books, it honestly felt like I was playing through one from start to finish. It may be a bit of bias on my part, as I'm a huge fan of the Redwall series- from each of the books to the cartoon adaptation- but I think this deserves to be checked out by anyone either curious of the world of Redwall or if you were ever a fan of the series prior. A couple downsides I might bring to attention is some bugs, text typos or audio discrepancies that either haven't ever been brought up beforehand or likely never will be fixed. It broke immersion a couple times- but not in any sort of tremendous way. Without saying too much, the way the anthology ends almost felt rushed- almost as if an Act 4 could have been a possibility- however an optimistic side of me has been thinking long and hard about this and... Honestly, it left me wanting more, in a similar way that the novels always left me wanting to check out another book in the series or re-read others. Maybe it was by design, but I've since been checking out some other woodland critter games in my backlog of games with the fondness I entered this one with. All in all, a faithful and charming recreation of the Redwall world, characters and aesthetics in game form. The puzzles and riddles made me scratch my head, as they should! I got incredibly invested in the top notch voice acting; on the edge of my seat with what might happen to the heroes we followed/played as. The downsides one might find with the game I feel don't hold it back enough from being an enjoyable play-through; at least for a Redwall fan. If you are one, I'd definitely check this out; one can tell the love that went into making it. ♥ I'll likely play through it again in the near future to seek out more secrets.
Really cute...good puzzles
The game is... interesting. It was made with a lot of effort and love, and it shows. The voice acting is SUPER well done, and the setting is, as you'd expect, pretty expansive. There is a LOT of dialogue for characters just idling around, and the numerous bits of collectible 'lore' around the game are all hand-drawn on different kinds of parchment. The art for the characters and cutscenes are quite good, as well. The problems lay in the actual gameplay aspects. The in-game graphics are... 'good' at best, but much of the game is kind of glitchy. There's a whole 'scent' system that isn't really interesting and useful, and for some reason even after you are acknowledged to have collected every scent in the game, there are still a bunch of ??? entries in the log. I was never HUGE into Redwall but even I can catch SOME of the various cameos and such... Martin the Warrior, the snake Asmodeus... but quite a few elements of the game are never really explained and/or resolved and I'm not SURE if that's because they're part of the larger book setting, if they're intended to be brought up in later game(s), or if they're just... I dunno, dropped plot hooks? There are also a number of 'riddles' throughout the game, but even having cheated and looked the answers up, I don't think they really... work. Ultimately it's a rather linear and simple game that's probably best for, y'know, children. But it's not BAD by any means.
This game surprised me. It's primarily a lot of sneaking and finding different ways of misguiding enemies, rather than having direct confrontations. There hasn't been a lot of weapon use like you might expect from a game set in the Redwall world, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as you are instead kept occupied with storytelling and problem-solving. It is heavy on the dialogue and lore but you can skip it or read to your heart's content. There's many hidden rooms, collectibles, nods to the original books, and some parkour/platforming, all of which I appreciate and find they fit well in the world. I love the scent mechanic, it's very unique and helps immerse you into feeling like a real woodlander. It's one of the things that takes this game from "good" to "great," in my eyes. I also enjoyed the mechanic where you have to "convince" another character without losing too many "hearts," although it got me eaten by Captain Snow. A small gripe of mine is that the game can hold your hand at times (such as the thumbnail images of the characters' emotional faces displayed during the "convince" mechanic), but at other times it'll leave you on your own to figure out a tough riddle. That back-and-forth is a little confusing. Otherwise, the gameplay can be rather addicting. The 2D static transitory scenes added a lot of dimension to the narration, it was a great stylistic choice and the art was beautiful. The 3D character models look very natural and the atmosphere of the environments is perfect. For example, the slough with Asmodeus. It really felt like stepping into the Redwall world.
Updating my review for this now im a little further into it! There are a few... what i thought were bugs that i encountered, it was me not being able to solve puzzles without a game hand holding me and highlighting things with a big red circle or flashing icon, i had to get my brain on for some of these! This game is dripping with dialogue and lore, the graphical style is actually really charming, and there is a really nice pace and sense of adventure to this game! Its just like reading a book with how non fast-paced it all feels! This is a really lovely game and the developers have clearly poured a lot of love and effort into this! There are a few rough edges such as trying to cheese your way through an area and skip a step and it looks like you can just about spam jump and make it but you hit an invisible wall, but you have to take a step back and appreciate the game for what it is and not treat it as something to be rushed. Its a story to be told, not a platformer to speed run. Also the scent feature in the game is really unique and fun! there is such a variety of different game styles in here I love it! :)
This game is really good. some genuine noodle scratchers when it comes to the riddles. lots of hidden things to collect and reminds me of The Hobbit for the PS2 but less on combat more on stealth and puzzle solving. If you enjoy reading this is definitely for you. lots of lore to collect and read, new scents and recipes to find and NPCS to discover. Discovered a shrine dedicated to Brian Jacques, wont say much else so as not to spoil it but its hard to miss if you enjoy exploring (which this game rewards the player for, always a nice touch). I would definitely recommend this game if you are a fan of Redwall or just enjoy a nice..umm..3D narrated puzzle story adventure. I got this on the steam sale but honestly, If I wasnt so mistrusting of every single game that comes out, I would of payed the £20.99. its worth it.
The Lost Legends of Redwall™: The Scout Anthology brings the beloved Redwall series to life in a narrative-rich adventure. As either Liam or Sophia, young scouts from the Lilygrove Scout Corps, players face off against invading searats, exploring Redwall-inspired landscapes filled with puzzles, stealth mechanics, and heartwarming lore. Pros: - Authentic Redwall Atmosphere: The game captures the charm of Brian Jacques' world, from its endearing characters to the beautiful, woodland-inspired environments. - Innovative Scent Mechanic: Players can use a unique scent-tracking feature to navigate and detect enemies, adding a fresh layer to stealth and exploration. - Character-Driven Replayability: Playing as either Liam or Sophia unlocks different dialogue and narrative paths, enriching the experience for fans wanting to explore both perspectives. Cons: - Unpolished Controls: Movement and interactions can feel clunky, particularly when sneaking or navigating tight areas, which can make stealth sections frustrating. - Fetch-Heavy Quest Design: The abundance of fetch quests, while true to the Redwall theme, can feel repetitive and lack complexity in later gameplay. - Occasional Voice Acting Gaps: While the voice acting enhances immersion, certain lines or sections lack vocal consistency, which can momentarily break the story’s flow. In summary, "The Lost Legends of Redwall™: The Scout Anthology" is a love letter to the Redwall universe, offering fans an atmospheric and heartfelt journey. Though it’s hindered by some gameplay rough edges, the world and story deliver a charming experience for Redwall enthusiasts. Score: 7 out of 10 acorns—a heartfelt adventure with a few nutty snags.
Sin embargo, The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology no está exento de problemas.
Not bad, middle type, only controls sometimes odd.
I played through the first of the three anthologies and absolutely loved it. It stays true to the original stories, a series that I love dearly. The characters are adorable, the puzzles are challenging, and the story is wonderful. Can't wait to finish the other two!
