Georgie-Yolkie 64 - The Furry Tale is a game designed as a (very) short story Hack and Slash RPG with baby light puzzles and low-poly graphics. It has some charming elements, but it is riddled with bugs and glitches beneath the surface and ultimately falls flat

Additional Info:

[th]Content & Value[/th] [th]I completed Georgie-Yolkie 64 in 1.4 hours after acquiring every achievement in the game. For those who want achievements: this game is very easy to 100%, but it doesn't count into the 100% completion percentage on the profile because it is tagged with "Steam is learning about this game"[/th]

Mode Single Player Only

Controller Recommended? Yes, but this is also playable with KB+M, but I prefer to play with a gamepad since it's quite clunky

Is it worth buying? No, not in its current 1.0 release state. Give this developer another year or two working on a game like this and it could turn out to be decent

Follow our Curator page, IndieGems, to see more high-quality Indie reviews regularly.

In-Depth

Story, Details, Level-Design & Bugs
Georgie and Yolkie's narrative is told in bog-standard, low-poly role-playing fashion. To free Princess Tabitha from the grasp of the evil King Rattie, who seeks to utilize her power for evil purposes, you must journey through 17 small stages, including boss fights, while playing Georgie and Yolkie. Following a few stages, we also have to battle King Rattie's minions, including boss fights. We encounter perhaps three different kinds of enemies throughout the game, and their color patterns are the only things that change. The enemy is white in the snowy region, blue in the verdant hinterlands, and so on. Because of this, the character design lacks a lot of depth, particularly when paired with Georgie's awkward movement. You can do damage by using his claw or various weapons that you can purchase in the shop, but once you inflict damage, you're frozen in a clumsy manner for the duration of the animation, which means you're getting hit a lot. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3504371142 During the game, we can find treasure chests filled with currency that can be used to purchase goods from the shop, feathers, fish bones (for healing), and magic balls. Additionally, there are a few minor puzzles, although they are rather dull and primarily involve moving objects to advance. When you finish a level, a brief black screen displays, and you immediately begin the next one. More plot tidbits are occasionally given to you, usually prior to a boss fight, but otherwise it's the same. By gathering upgrade scrolls, you can improve four major aspects of your playthrough: your magic skill, weapon damage, claw damage, and health. The worst part, though: The menu is broken and reduces the FPS to 10 for some reason, but everything works fine once you go back to the equipment menu. Therefore, the upgrade is quite basic, and the FPS is quite broken. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3504370885 There will also be a lot of bugs. On my 144 Hz screen, enemies fly across the entire screen as soon as their HP bar hits 0. Because you can't see much in some corners, you're usually fighting the camera more than the enemies, and there are many invisible walls where you might not anticipate them. Additionally, there is a problem that causes the menu to automatically revert to the first weapon when you select one and then return to it. This means you have to choose your preferred weapon each time because your input is not saved. However, there was one good thing: The soundtrack was enjoyable. Overall, it was passable, though I did love some parts of it more than others. At the end it's hard to recommend because of the terribly linear stages, wonky animation and movement. Check out this classic low-poly game instead if you want to play a really good one: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1949960/Super_Kiwi_64/
Conclusion
The gameplay is incredibly clumsy and glitchy, and the Georgie and Yolkie plot is bog-standard and bare-bones. Although it appears to have a button-mashing battle system, a low-poly art style, and a nice soundtrack, it's actually a broken mess. The gameplay is especially awkward on a 144 Hz/FPS monitor, with enemies flying over the entire screen, collectibles flying out of the map or behind invisible walls, and many other things.
Final Thought: Although in theory it is decent, the majority of the developer's games are poor and superficial; therefore, he should gain more expertise in the development sector before publishing another project like this – 3/10
My Playtime: 1.8h (100% achievement, finished the game) Grindy Achievement(s): No. Optional Achievement(s): No. Difficult Achievement(s): No.
Intro
Georgie-Yolkie 64 - The Furry Tale is a 3D platformer with retro-style graphics. It's a game where you need to reach the goal, beating enemies and avoiding obstacles along the way. Pros: - Each level can be finished quickly Cons: - It's easy to make bosses bugged - Confusing controls - Stiff combat Specs Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Should you buy this game?
There are too many issues that need to be fixed and at this price point, there are way better games you can buy.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
The visuals that remind me of PS1 graphics, albeit better. The models look sharp even though the environments look blocky. That being said, they still look great together.
Story
The story isn't the main meat of the game. It's just there to give the premise and the main character's goal. All dialogues will be told through some texts that are shown at the beginning of certain levels. However, there doesn't seem to be any conclusion in the story. The game will show the same dialogue that shows up before you beat the final boss even after you beat it.
The Game
Gameplay As a 3D platformer, the game doesn't give a lot of leeway to jump. You'll often need to jump while on the edge of the platform, but it's easy to fall down when you press the jump button near that area. Moreover, jumping height seems to be not constant. I know you can increase your jumping height by holding the jump button higher, but there are cases where I couldn't jump to a platform that I could before even after I held the jump button as long as possible. The controls that are shown for the controller are wrong. I'm not sure which gamepad scheme the game uses, but it mixed up a lot of buttons for me. I had to do a trial and error to figure out which was which, and even after all that, I still had a hard time navigating through the menus. In the end, I even had to use my mouse whenever I opened the menu. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3487353891 Speaking of the controls, the control to switch weapons is unintuitive. I spent minutes trying to figure out how to do that until I gave up and figured out how after a few levels. Moreover, the game seems to switch the weapon on its own after a while. Furthermore, the menu upgrades also seem to be bugged. I made the wrong upgrade even though I already selected the upgrade that I wanted. Obstacles can kill you. They will deal a lot of damage and you won't be given a chance to move from that spot until you die. Luckily, they don't appear that often and are still easy to dodge save for one area. For that one area, I managed to avoid the obstacle on my second try, although I'm not sure how it fares for those who are not proficient at platformers. Combat Combat is stiff. All enemies are the same save for the colors and their weapon. The different colored enemies usually have bigger damage and health without anything else to offer. The game seems to introduce one enemy that looks different in one of the levels, but the dev seems to scrap the idea and not place that enemy in other levels. The game is very forgiving. You'll often get health drops, which I don't know how to use, although that's not even needed to finish the game. If you die, you'll be spawned with full health nearby, even during boss fights. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3487353854 Boss fights are easy to be bugged. They feel similar, with them attacking in a certain pattern and you waiting until they stop before you can damage them. Moreover, I even managed to get most bosses bugged on the first try. Some minions will spawn once you deplete the bosses to a certain health, but they should be easy to beat as long as you upgrade your weapons. Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 1.8h. Since the combat is very forgiving, the game is easy as long as you manage to deal with the platforming section, which shouldn't be that hard to navigate.
Conclusion
As a platformer game, Georgie-Yolkie 64 - The Furry Tale feels lacking in a lot of departments. Combat is very forgiving, which makes me wonder what the purpose of the game is besides navigating the levels. The gameplay becomes boring as a result, especially since there is no challenge in the game.
Seems like an early test for a game? There is a game here but it is more of a tech demo of sorts to explore that a game can be built. Menu navigation isnt very good between moving through the shop or the character screen. I will not call it garbage or anything, but it is not really worth buying or playing in the current state. In the village level i managed to get out of bounds by accident by jumping on a balcony, this is where i refunded because i was stuck.
Georgie-Yolkie 64 - The Furry Tale is a barebone indie title. The store page key features are very misleading. The "clever" enemies are incredibly dumb. The "strategic enemies" are flat out simple. The "fluid battle mechanics" is either spamming attack, or a cycle of hit once, walk back, hit once, walk back - until the enemy is dead. There are no skills, only simple attacks, which is clunky, which you can see in the trailer. The "unique foes" are slight variations and are all handled the same way. The "character customization" is clunky, you collect a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of coins and then buy stuff, which seems to change nothing even when replacing a stick with a flaming sword. Jumping/platforming can be clunky. Invisible walls block you from walking. Can be glitchy in terms of positioning and jumping. After identifying attack-once then gain distance cycle to be the only meaningful tactic to evade damage, that's how I progressed. Which was slow, and irritating. At some point, I switching to running past enemies - which worked well, except for blockages you have to clear. Two bosses I defeated with what surely were glitches. Which I would have evaded if the fights were any more fun than using these glitches. Overall, I can't recommend it as a sold title.
Unfortunately can't recommend this game. The previous Georgie-Yolkie had some charm and although clunky, was pretty nice for the low budget that it was. This is NOT charming, and the budget appears to be far downgraded - yes, meant to be retro N64 or something. but that doesn't excuse it for how shoddy it was done. Also, death means nothing, so you aren't punished, and don't need much of anything to beat the game.
0/10 steam changed the download system and now im unable to download this game because im using windows 7 when trying to download and play i get Corrupt Download or Content Severs Unreachable. ways of bypassing this and running the games but you need to do it each time for each game, this takes a decent bit of work. most of the games will than run just fine. i give this game a 0/10 on steam and if your looking into buying it, would check other platforms
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is a sludge pie
The controls are absolutely atrocious. It's barely playable. Also comes with some random anti-tamper bs.
I like how king rattie would just be impossible if you didn't instantly respawn whenever he stunlock oneshots you
NO. Low quality game. There is a Skip button during the intro but does nothing. Once the game starts, if you get too close to a campfire you get burned but you cannot move away, so just watch and die. Enemies spawn and chase you but they cannot cross bridges or logs, they fall and die. The shop sells invisible hoods for 10 coins, with no image and gives you nothing. Level up button is broken, the equip button is broken. There are no clear map boundaries. One second I was running around and the next I'm in a new area. After I defeated a lion boss, the game decided to explain how to attack. I wrote this much to tell you: STAY AWAY.
