This is my second review of the Trails series within my journey to fully play the entire series. (Yes, I reviewed CS II first. I haven't played Sky and the Crossbell duology, but I will do so now) For a quick TL:DR to people looking at the reviews to see if this game is worth it, I rate it a 9.5/10. Though, do play the Sky series and the Crossbell duology first. Definitely does enhance your experience considering the massive climax that CS I holds. Now onto the actual review! // obviously, spoilers for CS I and a little bit of CS II!! this review will be quite short, since it has been about two months since I played CS I. I didn't want to review it until I played CS II to finish the first half of the Erebonia arc. As my first entry into the Trails series it definitely made its mark into my heart. The character development was superb (well, apart from a few characters, notably Fie and Millum, whos development finally got to me in CS II). Since this was my first Trails game, I ended up not save scumming or applying mods to see all bonding events. I believe that may be the reason it kind of hurt my opinion on some characters. While I did not particularly enjoy the fact that I was forced into groups with characters I did not favor (I liked Jusis, Alisa and Emma), it was genuinely the best choice since it helped me understand and resonate with characters deeply. One of the characters that grew on me was Machias, I didn't really like him until his Heimdallr arc. This was the same thing with most of the other characters, but Machias definitely had me feeling like I understood his character wrong until I played through Heimdallr (which was kind of a slog, I really wanted to play with Jusis or Alisa, but it was really fun to play with Laura and Fie!) However, since the Trails games are rather expensive, CS I ending on a massive cliffhanger (I genuinely do not know how people survived this cliffhanger) really had me pissed off. Particularly because I really loved Crow and Class VII as a whole, so I had to sail the seven seas in order to get myself a copy of CS II. I had to satiate my hunger to witness Class VII reunite once again, and that patience had reached its limit in a day. I teared up listening to the OST because it was just so depressing reminiscing about Crow's betrayal. What helped a lot with this JRPG in particular, at least for me, was that I did not even once get spoiled about his betrayal (unlike CS II). It really helped make the experience more fun and very dramatic. No fight was rather difficult EXCEPT C and Vulcan's back-to-back fight. I abused the Luminous Ray + Pandora + Silver Bell Emma setup with Jusis acting as a sub-Arts DPS. Well, this didn't work out for long especially during most field trips, so I usually switched it to the second-best mage currently in the party unless it was the Old Schoolhouse. In conclusion, I rate this entry of the series a 9.5/10. It's a great entry, brought down by the common tropes of a JRPG, but it's genuinely such a good game in my opinion. Alisa grew on me, and now I will defend the Rean x Alisa couple (and maybe Claire/Sara on CS II) for eternity. Obviously... start with the Sky series first and not Cold Steel. But it's an okay game to start the Trails series in. Just know that it's a huuge timesink.
