Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history.

Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 1.43/day in the week to Sep 3 → 0.14/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 23 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 14 places towards #1, and the 2,420 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

This game is a SLOW burn, the prologue was like 8-10h, wouldn't recommend this as a first JRPG ever but man it's one of the best JRPG ever and this is just the first chapter?! The story is your usual JRPG story, good characters, great soundtrack, etc.. All the good JRPGs are kinda have the same mould but I definitely was not ready for the ending. There are actually a lot of dialogues in this game, most NPCs will have new dialogues after an event or cutscene where in other games usually they will just repeat the same thing without acknowledging what just happened. If you installed the voice mod from EVO version all important NPCs will have updated voiced dialogues too. The Orbment and Quartz system is quite good consider how old the game is, it add some restrictions to how you can build a character but at the end everyone will just spam the same few skills, high tier arts are quite disappointing as they are so inefficient to use. You can't overleveled in this game due to exp curve, you get more exp if you're underleveled and vice versa so everyone will have the same intended experiences. I do not recommend playing this game blind unless you really don't care about 100% because there are hidden quests and items that you need to collect that is impossible to get without a guide because of how obscure they are. You think Dark Souls quests are obscure? How cute. Honestly IDK how are people even suppose to find out about these without the internet other than pure chance. Now I'm sad that I didn't buy the entire trilogy and won't be able to afford for a few months.

Original Review: I'm still on Chapter 1, but buying the ingredients, cooking, and selling Vegetable Sandwiches in the Prologue and Apple Ice Cream in Chapter 1+ over and over for Mira (money) is your best friend for never running out of money. ;) Edit: I dropped the game at the school festival and never went back. So while I'm changing my Recommended to "Not Recommended", it doesn't not mean it's a bad game, just that I wouldn't recommend it to people. Maybe one day I'll play the remake but until then...
Excellent game; I quit 1 year ago and recently got addicted.

70 hour setup thank you falcom
A grind and burn with a worthy pay off
Oh boy... This was on my list for a long time. I tried this game 2 times previously, and both times I dropped it at around (end chater 1)(start chapter 2). After playing a recent french hit, this game came to mind so I buckled up and power throughed it and... yeap. I get it now, totally worth it. From how I see, why I turned the game down 2 times is:

Slow burn - man... The game presents itself as it should, but I guess the current game industry kind of... spoiled me? I knew the plot is divided throughout 3 separate games, but I still expected FC to be out of the gate entertaining and captivating. Well jokes on me - most of the time I was doing random side quests and grinding sepith out of flying fur balls, and only a small portion of the game was the main story. This is the case for the first 3/5 of the game, starting from 4/5 the main story starts to accelerate.
Grind - this depends what difficulty is played. As I saw, on easy it should be fine without too much or even any side grinding, but on Hard/Nightmare, some hours of side grinding for xp and seppith is required (only the first 1/2 of the game this is quite tedious, afterwards it gets more streamlined and optimized)
And voila, I presume the first half of the game was a pain for most first time players to get through, I know for me it was. But once I got to chapter 3, the game just flew buy. I won't spoil too much in this section, it's best to experience it blind. If you are an optimization freak I could recommend reading on the combat damage / defense formulas, as well as power numbers for each Art and combat speed. Sadly, the game does not show ANY numbers for the player, besides the % application chance of status effects (even the turns do show current delay for each entity, making planning after 3rd full turn quite difficult / nigh impossible). After reading through this information you will not need any guides or tips, the system is quite simple and it does what it needs quite well. Overall the combat is great, after so many hours, I did not found it tiresome, and the mix of characters in each chapter (not having a static group) made things always feel fresh. The only gripe I have with the combat is that after the first 1/2 of the game physical damage (and Crafts) become redundant compared to Arts. As physical damage you will use either simple Crafts for their effects and not for damage (Shera's AT increase or T*** 100% Blind apply etc.), or buffed up S-Crafts on 200BP. I will not go into detail, but generally it happens due to:

EP becomes less of a problem later on
The increase of DEF/ADF of the enemies compared to the available scaling options for STR/ATS for the player are not equal. The player can scale ATS with most characters quite well, while STR lacks in many, if not all characters.
A big recommendation: play the game with the official VOICE PACK. It changes the overall vibe and feeling while playing, actually making slow burn within the first chapters more bearable. Overall, great game and a relatively good entry title. It's just, you have to power through the first 1/2 of the game. I really hope that Second Chapter will not require such intense dedication to start enjoying the game.
