i did not give this game a fair shake. maybe i will pick it up later i dont know. for now i mean i likely should have returned it but... maybe ill try again someday but i dont see that happening anytime soon.
I've enjoyed this game way more than I thought I would. Normally I'm not a fan of turn-based games, but the unique style, period-setting, and sense of high-stakes-adventure has kept me playing Lamplighters for around 90 hours now. In a nutshell, you start with a handful of eclectic misfits, mystics and machos who team up to stop a shadowy cabal known as the 'Banished Court' from taking over the world. Journey to every corner of the globe to steal vital intel and technology, recruit new heroes, and sabotage key infrastructure as you attempt to hold back the enemy from achieving critical goals each round. This game has some amazing level design, transporting the player to a time reminiscent of the Indiana Jones era, with ancient tombs, dense jungles, and urban hideaways each feeling well thought-out and rich with atmosphere and detail. The character voice acting and music score is on point and grips you with a sense of urgency, either when scouting out a new locale, or faced with overwhelming odds in one of the many challenging missions. Post-mission banter adds some levity and moments of vulnerability between characters, which makes losing anyone in the field feel that much more impactful. Explore each level in real-time, sneak around collecting valuable loot, health, and concussive items, and take down enemies to thin out the pack before setting your team in position to strike. Then enter the turn-based combat mode to use each of your team member's unique abilities, either long / mid range weapons, or close-quarters melee attacks to finish the job. Then escape with all your heroes intact before they get knocked-out for good (3 strikes = permadeath). Mission successes feel all the more rewarding when you finally make it through super punishing expeditions, providing you with stackable power-ups, research points for health / tech unlocks, and experience points for leveling up your heroes. In spite of a few minor annoyances (some characters feel a little unbalanced against tougher opponents, and KO-camera angles can be obstructed at times), The Lamplighters League is super fun, challenging and engaging at every turn. 2 thumbs up.
This game deserved to do so much better. It's a shame it received no support after launch.
Absolutely brilliant Pulp adventure game! The story was great, the characters anything but flat, music is great, and the mechanics aren't bad at all!
It's not a bad game. Is it great? No, but it might have been with some updates. IMPORTANT: There is a pretty crippling memory leak. I need to quit to desktop and restart it about every forty-five minutes or so. The game will start to stutter and slow down, panning the camera becomes a nightmare. Closing and restarting "fixes" it, but that's a workaround, not a solution. I'm trying to decide if I have the fortitude to keep going, or if it's time to move on.
Got this game on console when released, wasnt able to finish it due to bugs and crashes. Came back YEARS later, purchased ALL the content and started fresh.... only to find i still cannot finish the game due to bugs and crashes....
