I wanted to enjoy Grimlord because the early game really does feel promising. It teaches you to fight smart, aim for weak points, use angles, exploit armor gaps and while there are small issues like bad hit registration or enemies canceling their parry stun, they barely matter at first because early enemies have almost no armor or shields. The game seems consistent enough that you can play the way it wants you to. The story itself is fine and the voice acting is actually pretty solid, but the dialogue system is rough. NPCs will repeat their lines just because you’re still standing there, and skipping dialogue is slow and awkward. You have to hold the grip button, wait for a bar to fill, and even then it only skims the rest of the conversation instead of actually skipping it. The worst part is that once the line finishes, the NPC often starts talking again immediately, even if you haven’t moved an inch. The blacksmith is the biggest offender (he just won't shut the fu** up) Now about the actual gameplay itself and my biggest gripe about it. when you get past the second area the whole system collapses. Precision stops mattering, weak points become far and few if not nonexistent, thrusts turn into slashes, and armor behaves randomly. The game starts throwing fully plated golden enemies (past the third area) at you who are basically immune to anything except heavy blunt damage. If you didn’t already build strength‑blunt, you’re stuck hitting them for nearly two minutes per fight. Even some early bosses show this problem: the Golem and its Dryad variant nearly ignore everything the game taught you. Their weak points are tiny, they slide around when turning, and their wide ground attacks hit you unless you were already sprinting before the animation even started. It doesn’t feel like a fair challenge it feels like the game breaking its own rules to achieve this. Of course you wouldn't notice as much in the earlier stages because of how squishy the enemy's are, but at the third area they become walking health sponges to anything that isn't blunt, realistic but i feel ruins the already established tactics that being good at stabbing or slashing weak points does a lot more and reward you for doing so, completely removing it or making it obsolete ruins the experience that you built up beyond this point. I saw that some peoples response to the issues with enemy sponges is to get bigger number through levels. Although your right i feel it removes that level of skill that comes with overcoming an obstacle without it. Ofc it's dark souls but for VR. The issue is that you can't make the same plays as FromSoft because people are actually putting in WAY more effort for something YOU (developers) are pushing them to strive for. The in-game characters aren't incentivizing you to gain more levels they are critiquing your fighting style or training you to improve you tact instead of brute forcing your way through a threats. when you do that and turn around and slap fully armored enemys with ZERO weak points besides the small sliver in their helm only for most of your thrusts to trigger slash damage and not penetrate you get an frustrated person trying to figure out if they are doing something wrong. No, i have not played mage. i don't think i need to play mage for my point to still stand. and if mage is actually a cake walk compared to anything physical (that isn't blunt) it proves my point further. there can be meta, but not at the sacrifice of other options. for this reasons i can't give it a thumbs up, ill keep up with it and update my review later down the line as this game has MASSIVE potential.
Wow, what an amazing game. It captures that same sense of joy and excitement I felt playing Demon’s Souls, but fully immersive in VR. I really appreciated the freedom of customization. Instead of being stuck with specific stats mid-game, Grimlord lets you experiment with different builds. This is a welcome change from the Souls series, which tends to lock you into a path early on. The combat is awesome and encourages the use of real-world techniques. My only minor gripe is the weapon-dropping mechanic when facing repeated attacks; comparing it to Legendary Tales, which rewards successive parries and ripostes, Grimlord feels a bit more punishing in that specific area. That said, the overall experience is still incredibly enjoyable. My one complaint is that while using the PSVR2 on PC, I experienced a fair amount of crashes. I recognize that the game isn't fully optimized for the PSVR2 given its niche status on PC, but it would be great to see some stability fixes. Ultimately, I highly recommend Grimlord to any Souls fan, HEMA enthusiast, or VR lover
This is more for the devs to say not recommended currently... Played a total of 5 hours and now all of a sudden the game is crashing on startup. It's so bad it's also crashing steamvr. Unable to play whatsoever, so will leave this here until it's fixed. Fun game when I was able to play. EDIT: ahh....think i figured out the issue...steamvr isnt finding the executable properly. I tried starting the game through the desktop rather than steamvr and it said couldn't find executable. I then found the executable and it works that way.
If you like Dark Souls, this is exactly that for VR. I like the physics but also stats based fighting system with armor and weak spots. Feels fantastic to do a successful parade - reposte stab to the face, etc.
Its just what I was hoping for. A VR version of dark souls. A bit easier to make up for the jankiness of VR. You find upgrades to build better weapons as you explore, opening new paths and shortcuts. Also there is a huge upgrade system allowing customization (allowing points into magic or bow or weapons with or without shield). The combat starts as sword and shield (I haven't tried magic yet). You can dual wield if you prefer. Parrying/blocking mostly works with enemies sometimes phasing through blocks. If you like DS you will most likely enjoy the pace of this. So far the difficulty is just right. Note to new players: Finding the open flesh or seam in the armor and hitting it seems to be the key to an easy win. The collisions seem to cause some frame skips. If that were smoothed out it could be a 9.5/10. I'd give it a 8.5/10 as is. Definitely a must play VR game. Playing on a 3060Ti with a recent CPU and ssd. Getting 90FPS except maybe those weapon/shield/body collisions (I'm not watching the FPS - I'm trying to survive).
If only it had better, less clunky, combat. Edit: I will not be purchasing the game but I'll add onto what I didn't enjoy. The enemies sometimes stepped in a little too close to my own character and began swinging past me in one of their swinging animations (Overhead.) So it made it very difficult to properly parry without reaching over my shoulder to do so. It also made it seem like the enemy was just aiming to hit something behind me for some reason??? And if I ever got them near a stair case I could just whack their foot with an axe or sword till they died. They never bothered to go all the way down the stairs to fight me. Instead they acted like we were on the same y-level and fought the air above my head. Those two things were a big enough turn off for me to refund the game. The character model is also bugged. Might just be a me problem but I noticed that the shoulders were a little high up, making it so my elbow would be around where my bicep would be in real life. This wasn't realyl a problem, I don't think, but it made it so I couldn't see my health and mana in the immersive UI mode (Not a huge problem since I could just switch UI modes.) Though it did make shooting a bow more difficult if the enemy was above me at all. (Not directly above but on high ground.) One of hte archers I was shooting at in the first area kept ignoring my arrows hitting his head because of this. I could see them just bouncing off his face like it was made of stone or somethin. But anyways, I personally didn't enjoy the parry mechanic after a while since it was basically the same thing each time and wasn't that difficult to learn. Maybe it gets better the longer you play but I don't think I'll feel up to do that this year. This is a seperate little thing but I feel like most VR games should have a demo to them so people can better determine if the fighting in any given VR game would be for them.
its a grait fierst vr game
