It's basically a bland version of Diablo, but it's worth trying out since it's only like $4 on sale. Also works perfectly on the Steam Deck despite saying unsupported.
Excruciating experience from unbalanced difficulty spikes and some cluster game designs. If you can try to play this game on easy and experience very well done story and some fantastic character interaction not only with the world but also with each other. You and your demi god ghost companion will make some quite laughs on the way. True to that the world also provides some specticle of deep building and discovery. As a fellow gamers and all entertaining that surrounds us you will find a tale within a tale in this full packed game. “Its just a scratch” if you know wha I mean lol. Sadly the game starts to feel like a job not in a fun wait and more like suffering from somewhere middle of the road. Especially if you playing on hard. Constantly throwing at you packs upon packs of dozens and dozens enemies becomes tedious and annoying. Oh no these are not normal packs like in normal arpg these are out of balance ridiculous acid flips. The most annoying part for me was that almost every boss encounter has billions of adds running around a boss. It literally breaks an immersion and boss becomes a rather a jokester than a thread and the real villain becomes those constantly respawing adds with billions of hp pools. This is not how you create balanced difficult game with clear mind. Very disappointed by this game.
Better than D4 And I got it for 1/15 the price.
This is a weird Diablo clone. It has an excellent story with good writing and atmosphere. The developers had the great idea of turning your pet character into an actual, well, character named Katarina. The banter between her and Van Helsing is always amusing and it makes me wonder why other developers have never done this. As for the atmosphere, it nails the mix of old school horror (Frankenstien, the Werewolf, Dracula, etc) with steampunk. However, the actual gameplay is mixed. It CAN be fun, but only if you're willing to put up with some odd design decisions. Half the classes are so poorly balanced they're not worth playing. Half the skills of the fun classes playing aren't worth using. The endgame is boring. And, most damningly, while the campaign is great because of the story, THERE'S NO NEW GAME PLUS. Want to replay the campaign with your maxed out character? Tough, start a fresh character (or level up in Adventure mode first, but that's boring beyond words). Get this only if you're really interested in the story and when it's on sale.
Do NOT buy anything from NeoCore games. They've shown to be a shady dev that will revoke legitimately purchased keys out of spite and then lying about why they did so. They claim it's for "privacy issues" yet didn't bother to revoke keys until a couple of years after. So the dev is a thief and a liar. Hopefully they're out of the industry soon enough.
5/10 .Got tired of grinding for non-existent choices. I played the original game when it came out and it wasn't that great at that time, but it was more or less consistent. The Final Cut version pretty much stitches all of the 3 games, but at the same time makes you play the game with standalone classes. Now, my biggest complaint for the Final Cut is the lack of real choices and very boring / bad classes. I had the exact same issue with Torchlight II that didn't offer any worthwhile class, so my experience was rock-bottom boring. The Final Cut offers 6 classes, but I don't play melee unless I am forced, so I had to chose between 4. I really, really wanted to play the whole collection so, what I ended was getting all these 4 classes to level 20 to actually make my choice of class based on 2/3 of all skills. Sadly the gameplay with all 4 classes was absolutely boring and sadly, I arrived at the conclusion that I do not want to invest any more time in this game. The main issue is that this game is designed for ranged attacks and the difficulty is poorly balanced. You mow everything perfectly, then you are suddenly drawn into a fight and cannot escape or are pretty much insta-killed at range. Doing this with hardcore characters is really fun. Then, the "skill tree" doesn't give many options. You pretty much pick 1-3 skills and build your character in a way that they can use said skills for 20 levels then respec. Some classes don't even have basic survivability skills until level 20. The Rage mechanic is kind of poorly implemented as well. I don't want to pre-click stacks and micro-manage each of my attacks. The mecha is horridly slow and gameplay is mostly put mine, run back slowly, repeat until level 20. Then the left click becomes overpowered and all other skills look useless compared to it, so now you have an one-trick-pony build. Playing the summoner class is basically playing a walking simulator. Get your contraptions out, run towards the enemy, collect loot, repeat. Your basic attack is so slow and ineffective that there's no point in even trying to play actively. The hunter lacks any reasonable crowd control (as most are low damage or positional) and you are under-performing compared to the other classes. The mage looks good on paper, but you will probably end up using upkeep spells. This means that you use a static area spell, then make the enemy run after you in a circle to get the spell to work, wait for it to get off cooldown and repeat. All of this is boring and since you are limited by cooldown or mana, the progress feels like stuttery increments. Inventory almost doesn't have any consequence. Just grind and get the items off the enemies. Then bigger number is best, sell the rest. But money is not important as you can always find better loot so you'll be asking yourself why are you bothering with collecting all items and going into town to sell them? If you collect cetain unique trophies, you can unlock the stand that offers both a buff and a debuff, but that debuff will really hurt you, so that's an mostly pointless feature as well. Ability points and Katarina are also weird. Some characters go 100% in one ability, while others split between 2. Based on class, Katarina's skills work differently. For example, you have a skill that increases attack, but... it doesn't do anything on the mech suite, as it's attacks work based on cooldowns. For mage, if you use upkeep spells, there's no point investing into mana or mana regeneration which seems anticlimatical. All builds revolve around Katarina being melee and you only need to pump her with HP stealing items so you can pull your boring party tricks. Also had a lot of issues getting this to work properly on Linux. For now, I'll be putting this aside. Maybe one day I'll have the drive to go through this bore-fest 'till the end.
classes ruined the game. the non final you play as a monster hunter. typical van. melle/ranged. final all is seprate. i wana look and feel like van helsing or else id play another arpg
If you enjoy games like Diablo, Titan Quest, Griwn Dawn and Torchlight etc., you want to try this one. Get it while on sale or for free in case you already own Van Helsing 1-3. I prefer Final Cut over VH1-3 because of a) more playable classes (6 instead of 3) b) story of all 3 games in 1 with the same character (you cannot import chars from VH2 to VH3) c) skill tree rework d) available mods. incl. a few bugfixes.
