The Greater Good is an indie 2d sidestrolling rpg-lite about how Marlo saves the world, with help of others... Or that's my take on it, anyway. Beat it and got most of the achievements in 9 hours taking my time, using a controller. Difficulty can be set, but it's easy-medium in general. The good: - The dialogue wins this game twice over. - The music is unique, fits the game, and is pretty cool. Not in a guitar-thrashing mega way, more in a beep boop memorable way. - The polygonal graphics seem cheap at first, but they're done really well the more you play. Like dang those cities. - The main characters are all memorable. - There's a wolf! Awooooo! - Unlike most rpgs out there, this one is to-the-point in terms of where it's going. There's no real hard grinding to worry about, and you only have to fight a few monsters between here and there. There's some extra stuff at the end, and quite a few bosses, both requiring a little planning or strategy to get through. The bad: - The pace dragged its knuckles to the point I kept wanting to put it down. I think it was how slow Flint walked. Likewise, the airship is AGONIZINGLY slow to move around in. Battle pace was also slow. Not too bad. Enough to notice. - Most of the game is a level of Too Dark, especially in the one cave. I had a hard enough time telling where anything was, and it was twice as challenging to navigate during the day with the window curtain up outside. * Epilepsy warning - The game has flashing, like whenever someone casts a spell. This wasn't really a problem for the most part, until I came across this scene with Lumos where the edges of the water jittered with this white speckling hardcore (I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be waves coming in and out originally that went buggy). That might cause problems, and the view happened more than once. I don't know if the jittering water-splash graphics bug happened because I was in windowed mode all game or not, because I remember the scene being fine the first time I saw it. *** Light Sensitivity Warning - Most of the game is dark, and okay on the eyes... If you ignore that every time the character casts a spell or uses a skill the screen flashes white once. The biggest problem invovles a few scenes with dialogue to read where everything is white for a duration that really clawed out my eyes. Ow. In summary, The Greater Good is Greater than Good. It's got a steady plot, likeable characters, spiffy dialogue, and is pretty short and to-the-point for an rpg. For the graphics limitations, the designer really went out of their way to make things look dang good. The music is also niiice. If you're sick of playing rpgmaker games, but still have an rpg craving, this is a great Indie to turn to, especially for the price tag. The only real downside I can come up with (if you don't pay attention to the light sensitivity warning) is that upon getting the 'you win' achievement, I found only about 5% of people who played actually beat it, likely because it's a little slow to get around. Which is sad. It really is a spiffy game.
It's fun. I liked the music and the art style, the combat wasn't slow which is something I'm grateful for in RPGs, the story and the dialogs are also interesting, haven't skipped anything.
This is a mobile ported retro 2D platformer/RPG hybrid using papercutout/low poly graphics. Instead of a top down retro pixel RPG maker experience for navigation, you move around in platformer style, but the combat is ripped off from the Final Fantasy series of JRPGs. The mobile/console port heritage is strong here, and that's not a good thing. Fixed, low resolution, poor quality game assets infest what might have been a potentially workable concept (maybe). The game prompts you with controls hints for a console peasant toy gamepad, not KB+M. Controls are fixed, too. Overall, the low quality and lack of minimum PC gaming features makes this game a failure. Also, in a big "screw you" to PC gamers, they want $5 USD for this on PC where it's $4 on IOS. Scumbag developers gouging PC gamers is unacceptable.
I really liked The Greater Good, it had an amazing story and i really like how the side scroller aspect didn't take away from the immersion. I even bought the soundtrack, i loved the sound design.
Fantastic game! Beautiful artistic details, fun jokes and dialogue, nice twist to the linear structure about 3/4 of the way through. The equipment system is a unique change forcing you to think about what items you might want for any particular area or even one particular fight. Lots of secrets - everywhere! It's fun jumping around looking for every hidden thing. Overall, well worth supporting this hidden gem!
Pretty good game with a unique art style, also short so it doesn't require a massive time commitment like many jrpgs do
"ThisGameIsFun" is the password eh? how about this game is slow and plodding, you've got decent animations and movement, but the dialogue, battles, and menus are constantly bogging it down. I was giving it more of a chance before leaving a review but that just felt annoying on top of everything. Will update review if it improves, but currently, it's not looking good. There's a reason less than half the people who played it managed to get the very first progression achievement. Edit to add further play: Played a bit more: Softlocked your game. Other "high" points: NPC instructor telling you run away from too tough fights- No run away option in game. "Hey this cave is so dark, it's a lot darker than I remember!" - Brightest area in the game so far, first area I can actually see everything clearly. Then immediately after I leave the "dark" cave, it gets genuinely dark, and only gets darker from there until it's pure black area. "Warning, difficulty spike ahead!" - after you're beyond the point of no return and can't stock up on healing items or do any grinding to level up. This game is a disaster.
This game is a masterpiece.
