It is super rare that a game leaves me feeling the way this one did. at first I thought it was going to be overhyped so I came in with cautious optimism... this game now stands among my favorites of all time... clashing for the top spot even. Very likely to be my game of the decade. Not once was combat tedious, not once was exploration boring, not once did I feel like I was ever making mostly meaningless choices... or just picking something just because it made number go up(ok... stat allocation is just that... but that is all stats do!). I WILL be 100%ing this, just did the mainstory ending 1 of 2 so far.
While what this game managed to achieve size wise with it's modest budget is definitely commendable, during my playthrough I had to realize that Expedition 33 is likely the most overrated piece of media in recent times, and that fact simply got validated more and more as my playthrough progressed. I resented the characters nearly without exception which was the main issue for me. The one exception being Verso. The rest of the cast's writing, appearance, and general acting is unfortunately incredibly mililenial-coded, nearly every conversation is always relying on cheap comic relief in an otherwise "serious world" (never seen that before!), cracking jarring, poorly written jokes to ease the mood even during supposedly meaningful conversations. Which, you quickly find out why the developers turned to - as whenever there IS a dramatic, hard-hitting scene in the story, the character's acting is laughable. Maelle's crying face might as well be the least believable portrayal of emotion I've seen in a videogame. And since they couldn't get their character acting right, it made sense for them to turn nearly all dialogues into a light-hearted, goofing around tone. It's been a long while I have seen characters in a game that whenever started acting, I was hoping for the cutscene to finish as fast as possible, as at times it's really unbearable. The story itself is good, which is a shame, as a story with nearly no likeable characters is hard to enjoy. The music is without a question, outstanding. The fighting is definitely a really enjoyable part of the game, however since it eventually turns laughably easy even on hard difficulty, especially near the endgame where you one shot every opponent, ultimately it didn't make up for the lack of a great general direction in the game. Ultimately, if you are looking for a not too difficult but rewarding action game where you can hone your parry skills in a turn based format, it's definitely worth a shot. You will have fun for a while. However if you are looking for a hard-hitting "masterpiece of the decade", like I was, I cannot recommend this game - especially not buying it.
I genuinely believe that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of the greatest video games ever created. Not one of the best RPGs. Not one of the best games of this generation. One of the greatest games ever made. Every once in a great while, a game comes along that reminds you that video games are not merely entertainment — they are art. This is one of those games. Expedition 33 is a masterpiece in every sense of the word: breathtaking visuals, unforgettable characters, sublime music, emotional storytelling, and gameplay that somehow manages to feel both fresh and timeless. The combat system is nothing short of perfection. It takes the strategic depth of classic turn-based RPGs and injects it with energy, skill, and excitement until every encounter feels meaningful and exhilarating. Every mechanic sings in harmony with every other mechanic. The art direction is so stunning that many scenes belong in museums. Every environment looks like a painting come to life. The soundtrack doesn't merely accompany the journey — it elevates it into something transcendent. And the story... the story stayed with me long after I put the controller down. Games like this are why many of us fell in love with this medium in the first place. Calling Expedition 33 a video game almost feels inadequate. It is a monumental artistic achievement. A huge piece of art. A triumph of creativity and passion. If video games have a Mona Lisa, this belongs in the same gallery. No bugs. No filler. No wasted moments. No compromises. Just perfection. Years from now people will look back at Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as one of those rare landmark titles that defined an era and demonstrated exactly what this medium is capable of becoming. A masterpiece. 10/10 doesn't do it justice.
Lost Odyssey, Nier, and Shadow Hearts tossed in a blender with Sekiro's parry. This game is incredible, and possibly the single greatest thing to come out of France since the invention of the croissant
"For those who come after!"
Expedition 33 is probably one of the few turn-based games that I'm genuinely invested in. I love almost every second of it. Incredible soundtracks, interactive gameplay yet strategical, the world's aesthetics, and the dialogue; the banter feels so... how do I say it, like so incredibly organic, especially for modern games, which is something I'm really loving. By that, you can't help but adore each of the characters of this game as you progress. That said, you can tell this is the studio's debut. There are moments where it feels a bit stiff, particularly with the gameplay animations and the transitions between gameplay and cutscenes. The climbing sections, in particular, feel quite clunky and kinda break the game's flow, just a bit, imo. Overall, I really love this game. It's a fantastic start and it truly sets the bar of proving that a modern game still can absolutely deliver such an incredible and impactful experience. Wish the best for Sandfall and their next game to be more awesome!
An absolute masterpiece! The story is emotional and beautifully written, the visuals are breathtaking, and the soundtrack is simply incredible. Every moment feels meaningful, with unforgettable characters and an atmosphere that stays with you long after you finish. Easily a **10/10** experience.
I will be completely honest, I think this game appeals to a specific type of people, and that people just doesn't happen to be me. I think this games story is very interesting, I have mentioned to friends that I would watch a TV show about it if it were to ever come out. To me, though, the gameplay is very dull, it is a parry simulator and you will regularly, if not most of the time, use the same moves over and over again. I think this game is good, but not great like tons of people say. I would give it a solid 6/10. Good story, gameplay is just not for me, I will not finish this game.
🗼Old Lumière - Révérence
