one of the best detective games out
One of the better mystery games out there.
I highly recommend this game but if you're on PC you might want to load up the OG version and not Redux. Let me glaze this game (and the Golden Idol series) before I get into that: This game keeps you guessing from start to end, building up a bigger and bigger picture each time. It isn't immediately clear how events connect to each other and everything you learn feels earned. Progression is done through ad-lib puzzles, so you're filling in the blanks on what took place, as well as who is who, and other things unique to each chapter. The puzzles themselves don't allow much in the way of reverse engineering so you can't always cheese it by working backwards. It is a challenging game but it's not stupid the way chickens with pulleys were in 90s adventure games - every single clue is present in the scene or deduced from earlier ones. The one thing I don't like is the Redux version and I imagine that's why the OG one is still a choice on Steam. Redux is not built for mouse and keyboard on PC at all, it's rebuilt for touch screens and TV and it is easy to mess up because of how it chooses to replace and select the next word. You don't gain much from it except a super chunky interface. Rise of the Golden Idol solves that problem much better.

Excellent deduction game with a compelling story. I found myself thinking about each case between playtime and couldn't put The Case of the Golden Idol down until finished. An easy recommend!
A game that accomplishes the tremendous task of allowing players to be a little dumb and lost in order to elevate them to feeling like geniuses when they complete logical word-bank puzzles. It somehow is capable of threading the needle between too-obtuse clues that make you hunt for pixels, and 3rd grade reading-level billboards that send the player in one obvious direction. Great for anyone that is in the mood to think.
I've played all kinds of detective mystery/puzzle games in my life: Obra Dinn, Roottrees, L.A. Noire- you name it. So far, this has made me feel the MOST like one. Extremely challenging but super satisfying once you figure the cases out.
The Case of the Golden Idol is the ultimate distillation of the murder mystery genre in a point-and-click format. I don't think "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" is exactly the right word for it, but I think you'll get what I'm saying. The game has no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, no fluff, everything in the investigation is as you see it, and it's up to you to figure out what happened. Every case is incredibly constructed, and despite its simplicity, it still manages to provide a compelling plotline throughout them all. I would highly recommend this game to anyone.
Very enjoyable deduction puzzle.
Love the ugly-interesting and generally sinister looking art! The puzzles are challenging and there is a lot to look through and explore to slowly put together the lore and piece together the mysteries. Some games like this can feel sterile and bland but this one really brings you into it's grim little world. Armed with little more than fill in the blank and logic matching charts the game draws you into its web. Had a good time with this.
