About

The Idol was lost — but not forgotten. In this followup to the award winning detective game The Case of the Golden Idol, you are an observer that must investigate 20 strange cases of crime, death and depravity - all somehow connected. Use your detective skills to make sense of a grand mystery that unfolds across an age of hallucinogens, disco, fax machines and parapsychology.

Two hundred years after the unspeakable fate of the Cloudsley family, the Idol's legend lives on only in whispers and myth… but some are determined for this to change. Discover the mysterious forces connecting a tenacious treasure hunter, a team of scientists, the members of an enlightenment-seeking cult and corporate profiteers drawn to the all-powerful artifact.

The Rise of the Golden Idol is a new type of detective game where you freely explore each crime scene at your own pace, using logic to build your own theories. Click to collect clues and analyze each discovery to determine what happened, why, and who was responsible.

Convicted prisoners, new age cult leaders, corporate middle management and many more figures have a role to play in the wider mystery that unfolds — each driven by their own agenda. Scour each scene for key details to put names to faces and deduce their motives.

A reworked interface lets you quickly gather key terms from observations and witness testimonies, greatly expanding the depth and variety of each scenario. Upon the conclusion of each chapter, a new type of puzzle lets you revisit past deductions, recap the events of these interconnected cases, and investigate the threads that unify them.

I loved the original game and the Spider of Lanka DLC, but unfortunately The Rise of Golden Idol suffers from the same flaws as the Lemurian Vampire DLC. This series is no longer about elegant logic puzzles. It’s instead a convoluted and poorly written game of Mad Libs, requiring conjecture and word swapping to ‘solve’. I abandoned it on realising how tedious I was finding the garden scenario (I was playing offline so my play time is not accurate). I think this is the end of my time with this series.
In isolation this is one of, if not the best, detective games I have ever played. But Rise of the Golden Idol is very hard not to compare to its incredible predecessor. Rise tries to set itself apart from Case by its creative choices. The game is set in a time that closely resembles the 70s, with matching political issues and technology that make its world feel familiar. The new 3D enhanced visual style is more detailed and less crude than the original one, making the imagery less unsettling. The story also doesn't play into the occult undertones of the original as much and is probably the weakest aspect of the game. Particularly, the slapstick buffoon character failing upwards in their organization didn't fit the tone at all. This all contributes to a loss of mystery that surrounded the first game. A secret society in the 1800s is interesting. A secret corporate project in the 70s is cliche. Beside the artistic choices, there is little to complain about in the execution: the puzzles are outstanding, but every now and again I felt the solution was too picky, only accepting a very specific wording. The gameplay is basically identical, which is great because the first game worked incredibly well already. The music is fantastic, and the visuals look great.
An absolute masterpiece. I learned my lesson with the last game and gritted my way through the entire game + DLCs, without resorting to hints or guides, and that was an incredibly good decision. It's just such a beautiful and elegantly designed work of art. Half of the joy comes from solving the puzzles themselves, and the other half comes from noticing the raw craft and intelligence of the designers in arranging the red herrings, the clues, the word banks, et cetera, in such a precise and just-so-elegant way. It's not as difficult as the first game and its DLCs, but it's just as satisfying. My rankings: Main Story > Curse of the Last Reaper > The Lemurian Phoenix > Age of Restraint > Sins of New Wells. Without a doubt it's the Game of the Decade for narrative/puzzle games. This is up there with the greats, in the Disco Elysium/Outer Wilds bracket.
The gameplay loop is actually kind of meh, but the story is so weird and the art is so trippy that it's still fun to uncover what's going on. Definitely better with the "with highlights" setting off so that you have to click around a bit and not have everything handed to you.

I adore this game, but strongly prefer the original. This story feels deeply unnecessary, changes the lore arbitrarily, and ends confusingly. Worst of all, there isn't enough murder.
