One of the bests investigation and puzzle games I've every played. It has such a great story and detailed background, the makers put an incredible amount of thought into this.
Fun deduction game that works best if completed in a short span to keep recollection fresh. Good length. In-game hints available, are not direct answers, and do not penalize achievements. Some solutions are tough to untangle and may need a notepad. Great Steam guide available that spells out the deductions. The game encourages you to go back and revisit scenarios for clues. If your recollection is poor (like mine), you may find yourself revisiting and reclicking on most objects which can be frustrating. I can't imagine playing with object sparkle/highlighting off, so I'm glad that it is the default & recommended option.
I went into this one completely blind, having never heard of it. The recommendation was given to me with strict instructions not to look anything up, which I'm extremely thankful for, because that is absolutely how this game should be played. If you proceed to read this before playing, consider yourself mildly disapproved of (but also thanks for reading <3) The Case of the Golden Idol throws you quite literally into the thick of it. You are an omniscient detective who is examining a specific point in time. Invariably, this point in time will be straight after one or more characters' untimely demise. Your task therefore is to work out what happened in the run-up to this moment. There are a total of 11 "cases", over which an overarching narrative begins to form. Within each case, you click around, examining clues which help you piece together the events. Clicking on and within the clues unlocks a limited vocabulary which you can then use to enter your deduction as to what happened in each scenario. You give your answer within a "Thinking" panel which operates as a sort of detective board. You do this by filling in pre-made sentences with the vocabulary you have collected from the clues. Within this panel there are some smaller details you can solve first so as to make the big picture easier to deduce (For example, putting names to faces). The only negative I had with this game is that the answer fields slightly gave away certain details and defined a sort of shape of the events. I would recommend new players don't open the solution panel until they are 100% sure they know what happened, as it can sometimes feel like a spoiler if you do it prematurely. That advice leads me on to my main praise of the game: If you let it, the game makes you feel like an absolute genius. Figuring out the full course of events for each case can take time, and you'll often be banging your head trying to work out what piece of evidence you haven't connected. But when it clicks, oh man, no other game has made me feel like a detective out of a film in that way. I really urge you not to look up answers and persevere (as does the game, if you choose to use its in-built hint system). Each case increases in complexity, with the final scenario having over half a dozen characters and locations to suss out. The visual and musical presentation is unique and the atmosphere slowly but completely sucked me in. The story evolves throughout the game and I found myself constantly questioning the characters' motives. The way it all plays out and comes together at the end is nothing short of brilliant. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to feel like a detective for a day.
