Key provided by publisher with the intent to write a review +presentation can be pretty cute +music is a bit loud but charming +cheap -Camera goes crazy at the start of levels. -REALLY floaty controls -lack of feedback when being hit -overall lack of sound effects -health meter is tiny and hidden -enemies go out of the playing are -enemies sometimes take 1 hit sometimes 20 -menues are really ugly and slow -poor optimization going from 15 to 60fps -levels refuse to end sometimes -sometimes the attack button doesnt work -keys seem to do nothing, i started a level that needed a key with 6 keys and it didnt even got used when i used them in the door -there are several levels that have like 6 exits that take you to earlier levels, so you have to play 2-5 levels to get to the point where you can try another exit... there was one at like half the game that took me to the beginning, ♥♥♥♥ that -there is an actual game over screen where you seem to have to start the game again but i dont know how to trigger it i got it twice, first the first time that i started the game havent done anything it took me there and second in a random death to some spikes -the custom cursor is still visible during gameplay -after the first boss there is a door that says "return to the soupe"... it literally gives you a game over screen and makes you start from the beginning -the maze level is a joke, you can wall betweenb the bars -camera still moves while on pause menu -there is a level that without reason disables the save feature wich means i have to start from the beginning of the previous level to complete it if i fail -you dont move alongside moving plataforms -it forces you to get all the secrets (gold) scathered trough the level and it doesnt even tell you how many of them they are, it only says when you reach the ending that you still have gold to get -only if you die by getting all your health taken by monsters do you restart a level with full healht, if you fall to a bottomless pit you return with whatever health you had left -300 seconds time limit for each level wich combined with having to get every gold chest in the level to finish it makes it quite bad -and finally the coup de grâce of this review... there is a level about the end of the game called "dont worry about the things" where you cannot advance anymore... the reason is a combinatin of stuff above, it ask you to get all the gold but there is one gold nowhere to be found... except there are some moving plataforms around the level that take you to places that you cannot get without them and being that you dont move alongside the moving plataforms you will try to move with them but no... for some reason the moving plataform ends up going faster that you can so you end up falling and alas the last gold (if there is one) cannot be found and the level cannot be completed
Everything about this game is awful. Here was my experience: >Boot up game >Greeted by poor audio quality and a story written in what seems to be the Joker font. >Skip the cutscene to find there's a delay when you skip, so I got to sit there staring at a still image for a couple seconds, only for it to skip to another cutscene. Why is there loading issues simply with the cutscenes? >Press start again, skips me right into the game with no menu >Walk around for one second, loading screen, get put into a "game over" room. >Mess around with the combat while I'm there. Poorly animated, awful, camera controls terribly >Press start to go back to main menu. Greeted by awful GUI that looks like it was made in MS Paint >Launch into game proper this time, don't get randomly sent to Game Over >Play for a bit. Combat is god awful, sound effects are terrible, the story seems to be attempted to be told through the game or something? Found a room that said "Meanwhile..." in text over it. >Oh, speaking of the level, also bad pickups. Just walk over a treasure chest and it disappears when you get it. No animations at all. >Move on, find that text rendered into the game is a very common occurrence. Ugly text. >Decide this game just isn't for me. -1/10. Would give 10/10 if the game uninstalled itself.
I bought this game knowing that it probably wouldn't be the most polished or sensical thing I had ever played, and I can enjoy simplistic, "clearly showing their budget" games, but even with those somewhat lowered expectations I have still come away thinking this is a poorly made mess. This game seems very imaginative and cool conceptually (a pirate, dreams, etc..) but its execution and implementation is horrible. The best thing this game has going for it is its unique setting of creepy goblins versus a pirate dude in somewhat "dreamy" locales. Unfortunately, playing the game is a complete mess, with very little feedback or explanation to any of the combat or actions you take. Instead, you're just thrown into the opening levels with a ton of goblins swarming you, who constantly jump and flail around wildly swinging their clumsy attacks as you do the same, flailing your sword and just assuming that you're hitting them, aside from an obnoxious "bell-like" sound that triggers every now and again I suppose indicating that you're hitting them. There is a UI / comic-book looking "ARGH" that pops up over and over from you and the enemies, meant to indicate damage being done (I guess?) but it all just feels very sloppy, like most of the game. There is very little structure to anything you're doing, and not in an abstract, charming, minimalistic way present in other games but instead it comes off shoddy and poorly put together. You aren't even told what to do beyond there being an Exit cave in one of the rooms of the level you need to eventually reach. For example, during one level with about 15 of the same generic looking goblins running around aimlessly, apparently I needed to defeat all of them in order for the Exit tunnel to be activated (despite it being visible) So I had to spend a few minutes swinging at and hoping to hit this higher health, different colored (but same model) goblin, flailing my attack against him until he eventually just disappeared, then I could go through the exit. The next level consisted of a very simplistic platforming area, but the character's jumping and landing handles so horribly it's like trying to navigate an icy surface everywhere, with your character landing and then drifting an extra 2 or 3 feet to fall off the ledge and force you to restart the sequence. The level after this involved a very basic looking sphere meant to be a boulder rolling back and forth down a tunnel which you would have to evade by hiding in a few alcoves, then reach the exit (EXCITINNNNNG) After this level it was another level strewn with goblins and some bland-looking 'traps' and my character became lodged in an overhanging log after jumping into it and couldnt get out, forcing me to quit, so I logged out of the game and am now writing this review. There are signs scattered around the level that say things like "Secret Passage (Under Construction)" which is then just a boulder wall that clumsily retracts as you approach it. While I think this is a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment from the creator(s) that it doesn't look great, at the same time it pisses me off to see this kind of blatant "HAHA our game kinda sucks, right???" self-awareness after you've spent your money to experience the title. This game might open up a little if you get past these horrible opening levels but I don't feel like bothering to sift through garbage just to ~maybe~ get a morsel of enjoyment from some of the later settings.
Another game with the potential but massively flops due to design clashing with art style and mechanics. Promisingly semi-unique story with disappointing gameplay frustrating game mechanics and elements, one song looping the entire game and pure, endless frustration. 1/5
The Adventures of Capitano Navarro is from Don Emídio Navarro Games out of Brasil. The game follows Captain Navarro through fantastical dreamlands in a quest to save the fairy queen Verdefolhas. The setting leaves a lot of potential for a visually stimulating platform adventure. Unfortunately all potential is wasted due to a clumsy handling of the character within the environment. Frustration and repeated tries to navigate simple jumps are what you will take away from this game. Even if the game mechanics were more responsive, the level design is horrid as most maps are recentangular arenas with bottomless pits spread throughout. It is a shame that the original artwork, featured nicely within the few cutscreens between episodes, and the original music are lost within what should be an internal test build. This should never have been released into the public as a game for purchase. Even if the game were free it would leave a bitter taste afterwards. Avoid this title. Do yourself a favor and take it off of your wishlist.
I am ashamed to own this game in my game library
One of the games I ever played.
i bought this game 3 years ago. I don't know why. this game has ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ controls and barely functions. it's almost so bad its good but it's actually not. its just painful to play.
