It's very nice! Please support the Kunio-kun (Also known as River City in the west) series so we can get more games translated and brought overseas! The controls are a bit weird at first, but you can edit them (At least in combat, not for menus.) but once you get over that, it's great. I've only played the story mode so far, but there is other stuff like edit mode to make your own customization, and online mode too. (This is an updated version of River City Melee Battle Royale Special, but it has the same story as far as I can tell. It's cheaper too, so make sure not to mix up which you get!)
A casual fighting game player reviews River City Melee Mach!!
For this installment of A Casual Fighting Game Player Reviews…, I’ll be taking a look at Arc System Works’ River City Melee Mach!!. This game is an enhanced version of River City Melee: Battle Royal Special, a 2D battle royale brawler featuring characters from previous Kunio-kun (or River City outside of Japan) games. Excluding this title, I’ve only played two River City games: Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun and Nekketsu High School Dodgeball Club (a.k.a. Super Dodge Ball). Despite my limited familiarity with and shallow knowledge of the series, I do consider myself a fan, particularly of its beat ’em up and over-the-top action. Let’s see if RCMM!! appeals to a casual fan like I, or if it’s more tailored for the hardcore fans. PRESENTATION/GRAPHICS River City games don’t have a consistent visual style, but I venture to say that the 8-bit presentation in games like Super Dodge Ball and River City Ransom is considered most iconic. In RCMM!!, the developers kept this 8-bit look for its large roster of characters, while rendering the backgrounds in 3D. This is the same style that they used in their previous titles, River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Star Special~ and RCM: BRS. They sure know how to milk their graphical assets for all they’re worth! This mix of 8-bit 2D sprites and 3D rendered backgrounds may seem jarring at first, but it actually works. During the frantic brawls, the 8-bit characters and objects stand out, indicating who and what can be interacted with. Despite a roster of 180 playable characters, many of them look (almost too) similar, especially when illustrated using limited colour palette. It’s easy to get the characters mixed up when they’re clustered together and/or the action gets too chaotic. River City fans will likely approve the artistic choices that the developers had made. GAMEPLAY Compared to other fighting (non-beat ’em up) games, the gameplay in RCMM!! is very simplistic. If you know what buttons/keys to push for moving and attacking, you can play this game. Although the developers boast there are 250 special attacks that can be pulled off, you don’t need them to win. In fact, I’ve completed RCMM!! without using any special moves, and I’ve even earned an achievement for it! RCMM!! has a single-player story mode (with a story that’s frankly there to loosely justify why there’s a battle royale happening), Free Battle Mode (featuring Free Play, Change Match, and Endless Battle) and Online Battle Mode. Single-player and Free Battle modes are your typical story-based and non-story-based battles, so they’re nothing to write home about. Yet, I must warn you about the Online Battle Mode. For a game that’s just over a year old at the time of this review, the online scene for RCMM!! is dead. I’ve tried searching for opponents throughout the day, but I’ve found nobody to play with. A search through Steam Community also showed other players looking for online opponents, just so they can earn an achievement, and not necessarily for long-term play. That led me to wonder why the online scene for RCMM!! is so quiet? It turns out Online Battle Mode is very poorly implemented. Setting up an online game is a chore: finding battle rooms can be hit or miss, and starting an online match requires cycling through a series of menus that are not clearly indicated. You also can’t change battle settings and rules in between matches. Worst of all, online matches are noticeably laggy. In short, the online features of RCMM!! are pitiful. Overall, the gameplay feels unpolished, and is missing features. This game is really designed to be played using a controller, because the keyboard controls are unconventional, aren’t clear from the get go, and aren’t fully customizable. The list of special moves that is supposed to be included is missing. You can go online and find the list for RCM: BRS, but it doesn’t include special attacks for new fighters and teams introduced in this game. Plus, why isn’t there a simple tutorial for new players? For what’s supposed to be an enhanced version of RCM: BRS, this game remains rough around the edges in a number of areas. FUN FACTOR In spite of the flaws with its gameplay, RCMM!! is a very accessible game. As mentioned earlier, you can enjoy this game once you’ve figured out the basic controls. Don’t be surprised if you end up button mashing your way to victory! Eventually, I did figure out a few special moves by accident and through trial and error. This was the same for learning the effects of power items. This sense of discovery can be rewarding. I found that I didn’t need to know who all the fighters are to enjoy RCMM!!. In the end, they’re merely avatars, most of whom lack distinct personality that are obvious to casual fans like me. The game’s flimsy story doesn’t allow most characters to shine as well, not that it really matters. With its huge roster of fighters, you’ll definitely find at least one character and/or team whose appearances and fighting styles suit your taste. I did recognize a couple of tracks from the River City games I’ve played, plus one from Double Dragon, which totally jazzed me up for the battle royale action. SHOULD YOU PLAY RCMM!!? Yes, but only if it’s on sale because its overall appeal is short-lived, especially if you’re just a casual fan of, or a newcomer to, River City games. While I enjoyed the game’s simple gameplay and nostalgic character designs, it’s hard to overlook its flaws and missing features. RCMM!! will mostly appeal to fans of the River City series, but other players will likely enjoy how easy it is to play, too. Its lack of sophistication is a double edged sword – it’s a selling point to get casual players to try the game out, but it’s not enough to sustain long-term interest. It’s no wonder the online scene, however unrefined it is, is non-existent.
It mostly reuses the same engine from Super Sports Challenge, but instead of several events it's all-out fighting with a few new features. While that means it isn't the most ambitious game on the devs' part, it's still more of the proven good gameplay. Lots of characters, moves, and unlockables. Each team has a different storyline, and semi-randomized opponents adds a LOT of replay value. On the downside of things, the keyboard layout shares the same flaws as Super Sports Challenge (U, J, O... and cannot be remapped) but at least the controls are responsive. Controller support also looks grim, but if you can circumvent this with JoyToKey (or something similar), this game is lots of fun!
River City Melee Mach is an homage to the old school kunio kun games. It is kind of a fighter game with more of beat em up style. The teams are very likable mixture of old and new characters. The fighting is enjoyable because a lot of the fighters have different movesets. The disappointing part for me was how little range the maps had and how short the story was. As i said the story is very short and it unfortunately feels like a filler. The Nekketsu Kunio Kun series are so many peoples childhood favourites and i feel like this game is not scratching that itch. If you see it on sale you can buy it but don't expect much out of it.
Cant get past the first screen, literally mouse/keyboard/gamepad does't work. WTF
It's Kunio Smash Bros. A goofy fun party game at best. They did a lot to change up the special moves so they're not just lifted straight from RCR but it's still just an RCR vs mode with a nearly 20 year old franchise's worth of characters. This is an improved remake of River City Melee: Battle Royal Special, also on Steam. There is no reason to play Battle Royal Special if you can get Melee Mach. The same content and the same story is in this one, not that there's much story here. It's still a sequel to the sports game also on Steam, and both this AND the sports game are remakes of an NES game, which explains why this is so bare bones and basically makes this a remake of a remake. It's good dumb fun for an hour at best. The whole thing is functional so I can't really give it a thumbs down but it's not a particularly great game. On the bright side you can reenact the final showdown of River City Girls and have the best girls win! Make Hasebe and Mami piledrive Kyoko and Misako into the dirt.

Good game but I don't really recommend buying this if you've already got the previous Melee. Barely discernible upgrade (like 2 new items, a handful of new characters, 2 new stages or something, same story mode).
I refunded this game cause you cannot use a controller and I cannot get past the title screen.
