So this one is tough to review, because THIS IS A GREAT GAME! But the full $25 USD version still feels like the free demo (which I have put more hours into than retail if that says anything). What this game does right, it really does well, combat, abilities, vibes...all of it is great. But there are some major gripes I have that keeps me from giving this a positive review. Again there is the foundation of a fantastic game here, but there are just some things that keep me from actually playing it. Which are: 1) Runs take too long. Rougelikes live or die on the gameplay loop of being able to make incremental progress. Too often a 40min run can go south only for you to not have enough currency to make any type of upgrades, with in and of themselves are not substantial enough to feel the power progression necessary. The loop itself just feels at odds with its own systems and therefore feels bad. Personal recommendation to the dev team: Buff the skill and item upgrades, to give that sense of true progression in this genre. 2) Synergy of abilities is lacking in a number of areas, too many powersets feel like overlaps or too similar to really add any kind of build variety. Part of the fun in games like this is figuring out how to make the synergy of a run work to your favor which can create some busted combos. There just doesn't seem to be anything like that here at least in the hours I have played, and that also makes the gameplay loop feel bad. Which is a shame because the combat really is a great mix of action rougelite and musoulite. 3) Unlocking new characters is a slog. Leveling them up is a bigger slog, and this piggy backs on points 1 and 2 for the game being at odds with itself in actually being fun. 4) Allies, are functionally useless. This is where the game isn't quite sure what it wants to be, in a musou game the character is the tide turning force, the one person army that racks up 500 kills per battle. You are the legend made manifest. This game WANTS you to be that but also try to give you allies to bring along that you cannot really interact with aside from some passive buffs. Dynasty Warriors Origins solved for this by still making you the legend, but allowing you to do team up attacks, and your allied commands felt more impactful there. In this game, they just don't do enough to really feel worth investing in. Especially when leveling them up shares some other currencies you could use for other things. I bought the game, I don't regret supporting the developers because there is something good here. But I can't recommend the game at this stage because it simply isn't as fun as it could be, and you will functionally get the same experience playing the demo. This review may change over time as the game improves and grows.
The perfect combo… A - My wife went out of town for a couple days to rest and enjoy some quiet B - Kids are at summer camp C - I had off from work I bought Tears of Metal thinking, “this looks really fun.” I played for 27 hours over two days. I have not lost nearly two full days of my life to any game like that since the release of Skyrim back in 2011. This is an easy recommendation. It’s a simple formula of sheer fun, satisfying progression, a very appealing aesthetic, and topped off with a great soundtrack featuring heavy metal music and bagpipes! My only suggestions for improvement would be to add more variety to what the characters say during the battle. They repeat the same few lines over and over. Be ready to hear these lines hundreds of times… “LIKE CUTTING BARLEY AT HARVEST!” “THAT’S HOW WE DO BATTLE!” The game is awesome, though. And I’m looking forward to future content.
The gameplay is fun but why does every female character have to look like a man and then you have characters like gay xerxes and his trans caravan running around Scotland

I want to like this game after spending some evenings playing this with my friends, but the mechanics make it hard. - The rogue-like elements are too weak. Decisions during a campaign don't have much impact. - Skills don't have as much impact to be fun and the effects sometimes feel like they don't make sense. - Healing is very scarce and expensive. You will get damage because dashing into enemies is half the fun of the game and through pure randomness one enemy will hit you eventually. Revivals are also insanely expensive and once one party member dies you get into a vicious cycle of having to spend money on revivals and then not being able to afford healing. - Items bought during a run have miniscule effects. Mostly disappointing. - Items / skill bought through progression also feel like not having much effect. - "Builds" are non-existent. Not much synergy and smart choices required. - Companions and NPC don't do much. They feel like something you can completely ignore because they don't make a difference. It's fun for a short while but it get old pretty quickly. Imo rogue-likes should feel like "DAMN, I'm powerful" during a good run. Needs a lot of balancing, item + skill reworks and then this can become one of the greatest rogue-likes.
Fun hack and slash / deck builder / rogue lite / rpg hybrid. Mindless fun with lots of replay. The demo was good the full release takes it futher. Strong co-op. Recommend for a fun romp of a game that runs well on steam deck also.
This game could, and should, be extremely fun. At its base, it has great combat systems, artstyle and concepts, but it just misses the mark as you keep playing. It has an incredibly unfun gameplay loop, the difficulty goes up exponentially and you gain no resources from the runs, which is VERY annoying when its a 40+ minute run. Another problem i have, is all the boons/buffs you gain dont buff your character much, you have to do everything just to get a good amount of boons, and i honestly barely notice it. I truely think this could be a great game, but the gameplay loop and lategame runs for no return are boring. If you wanna get this game, wait a few updates and look again
