Ignore the pictures this game is AVN but more just visual novel....... it has "adult scenes" as much as an average movie for 18+ (I mean action ones from 90s and 00s not xxx ones) It is good story but it is fully railroaded but you do have some important choices but you can not choose where to go but it depends from your choices. It is good game but if you look for game with xxx scenes this is not it. Game lasted for me for one ending about 4 hours and I ran on barely 2-3 short xxx scenes.....
I really enjoyed this and brought it just after it released! I managed to get all the endings after a few attempts it took me a bit. Totally recommend this game especially if you love lewdness and a balance of good story too. Just wish there was more :D
Evelyn best girl, when will she get her own story where she can form her own adoring lesbian harem???
The story telling and art are great, but if you don't perfectly chose every decision for a particular path then you just die. It's fine to have some secrets paths with a tight decision tree like that, but it should be the exception, not the rule.
Note: This is labeled as an "adult only" game on Steam, so a bit of a heads up. XD Also, a wonderful friend gifted me a copy of this game. ^^ Tales From The Under-Realm: After Midnight is a fantasy yuri visual novel developed and published by Winter Wolves. It is the second game in the Tales From the Under-Realm series, with a third and final game in the planning stages. Although it's not necessary to have played the first game, Tales From The Under-Realm: Hazel (which I have reviewed although it's currently only viewable to friends), since this game can be played as a standalone, it certainly doesn't hurt. XD You take on the role of Nessa (whose name and appearance can be customized), a guard living in the city of Lothark. Life is peaceful and quiet for Nessa, working with Tara, her childhood best friend, under Guard Captain Samael until one day, two women from Dingirra, Nadja and her daughter, Cynthia, move to Lothark and take up residence in the House of Hands, a pub with a questionable reputation. Aside from that, Samael and his wife, Martha, have a secret that they're hiding in the basement of their home, and their rebellious daughter, Evelyn, can't help wondering what it is. On top of that, a series of murders that takes place after midnight plague Lothark. Since I don't wish to go into spoiler territory, I'll stop my synopsis here. XD In regards to the gameplay, it simply consists of choices that are presented throughout the story. While some of the choices you make determine which one of six endings you'll get, others determine whom Nessa ends up being in a romance with - Cynthia or Tara. As I mentioned before, you can customize the main character with her name as well as her skin and hair color. You have the option to turn on or off optional nudity, which is reflected in the several CGs that are shown, although the censored version is turned on by default. Plenty of Steam/in-game achievements are present, and they count towards a user's global total. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my thoughts. For Pride Month, I wanted to play a yuri visual novel, and it has been a while since I last played a Winter Wolves game, so I wanted to give Tales From The Under-Realm: After Midnight a try. Also, I wanted to catch up with the series before the release of the third game, so yeah. XD Anyway, I like how the story starts off, with the Nameless God narrating the story and introducing Nessa, pondering over how she died. (As I mentioned earlier, this can be played as a standalone game although I encourage people who like games like this to try out the first game.) Then there are two stories to follow: Nessa and her days in Lothork, and Evelyn and her life at home. Even though it may be off-putting for those who'd rather follow one story, I didn't mind this since these two stories eventually intersect, with the characters meeting one another. Early on, there's conflict between Evelyn and Cynthia when Cynthia wants to enter the magic academy that Evelyn attends. Evelyn is clearly jealous of Cynthia and doesn't want the attention away from her. Of course, it's up to Nessa to intervene since she's a guard and it's her job to keep the peace. Although I did like Nessa as the main character (despite that she doesn't have much personality), I found myself liking Evelyn more and following her story. There's a huge secret that Evelyn's parents are hiding, and Samael especially doesn't want that secret to come out in the open since it could ruin his career opportunities. The story kept me intrigued, and it certainly doesn't hurt that I enjoy a good murder mystery. There are a total of six different endings, with some being happier than others. In most of the endings, though,
Nessa becomes a vampire, so the Nameless God explains that Nessa is technically an undead
. As for the cast of characters, I liked that there's a variety of personalities. They feel fleshed out, and I did like Cynthia and Tara as the main romance options - the exotic beauty versus the childhood friend. However, I wish that Evelyn had been a possible romance option, too, since I'd grown to like her (despite that she initially comes off as a brat). Before I forget, there are a couple of recurring characters from the other Tales of Aravorn series, most notably Apolimesho. As for the writing, I found it fairly paced well. The story never felt dragged out. I noticed occasional grammatical errors that could use some proofreading, but the story itself is understandable. Compared to the previous game, I felt that the story and writing in this game is much better. Touching on the gameplay, I found that the choices really do make a difference in determining which ending Nessa gets. Does Nessa get closer or push away Cynthia or Tara? Does Nessa earn the trust of particular characters, like Samael or Evelyn? The choices you make do matter. Also, I was able to earn all of the achievements without any problems. Regarding the art, it's in the usual style that Winter Wolves tends to use. There's plenty of sexiness and spiciness, especially in regards to the romance scenes. However, they never feel out of place. The sprites and backgrounds are drawn and colored well, especially the CGs. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3270129900 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3270129710 With regards to the music, I enjoyed listening to the tracks. There's a good variety, and they depict that fantasy, adventure theme going on. Of course, the tracks fit well with where they are placed. There is no voice acting, but that's usually the case with a lot of English visual novels. Overall, would I recommend Tales From The Under-Realm: After Midnight? If you're a fan of visual novels, you want one that has hot, spicy yuri romance with a murder mystery to follow in a fantasy setting, and you enjoy games by Winter Wolves, then this is worth taking a look. As I mentioned earlier, I think this is an improvement over Hazel although I enjoyed Hazel as well. For the asking price, this might be a bit on the steep side, as it took me a little over six hours to obtain all of the endings and earn all of the achievements. However, on a sale, it's worth considering, and it's in a Steam bundle. I am excited for the third and final installment in this series, and I can't wait for it to come out. ^^
For more detailed, fully complete, high quality reviews like this, please follow The Introverted Gamer, prioritizing heart and soul always. ^^
as usual, Winter Wolves give us a wonderful Yuri VN With beautiful women and a story with lots of twists and turns. This world has a lot of stories around it that have been released or being written. My favourite is Obviously Loren Amazon Princess, even though it does not have the Gorgeous CG;s this has. The one that came after that, which is a prelude to Loren, I got half way through as It drags on for me, it is good in places but I got bored arena fighting, but the Yuri CG's were nice, but, like Loren, you can play male or female, Gay or straight. The Wizard is in both, as is the mentioned vampire and N'Mar. Samael is in Loren as the Army General and is an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in that to. The Vampire mentioned only lives in N'mar After the Main Battle that is stated, which you do in the Prelude VN. That is also where you meet Zak the Vamp,, you meet him in Amazon to in N'Mar. So this is before Any of that and finishes, depending on your ending, after that. I do recommend this for sure.
Short version: It's generally an upgrade from Hazel Overall it's an improvement from their previous title set in the same universe. The plot progression is more organic and smoother this time. Personally I'm not a big fan of
air dropped villain from nowhere, but if it works it works. It's better than forcing random Joe Schmoe NPC with a portrait you encounter to be a shoddy villain.
Both character routes are on equal footing in terms of writing. The endings are... certainly quite the curve balls. The good kind, not the ones that cause terribly bodily harm. Hazel already had a touch of mature themes, and AM has them as well this time. IMO, some of the more gruesome bits are glossed over too easily. I mean the poignant, emotional, personal drama and pain of Evelyn's family. There's narrating from an uninvolved third party, but the god with many tentacles is hardly a good speaking piece for the tragedy of the people is it? If you want to kill people off and leave an emotional impact, there needs to be more buildup to it than say X and Y happened. Show it, don't just tell it like it's a newspaper clipping. And then I ramble about story heavy spoilers and some plot bits...
Show the actual affair between Samael and Nadja. The whole dirty business to really hammer home the point what a two face ♥♥♥♥ Samael is. Show the feelings Martha has towards the secret in the basement. Heck, even write about the crap Nadja went through for her daughter. Instead of just throwing it out in the open like dirty bath water because Companion A or B decides to reveal these crucial information after some sexy time rather than leaving bread crumbs to hint at "Hey, there's something off with some of these people I know." I certainly can't take the whole "ooOOoooh, so and so isn't truthful with you so you shouldn't trust them" shtick from the tentacle god seriously. Unlike Hazel, you don't have enough valid reasons to suspect either of your romantic interest. Cynthia maybe since she's a newcomer. Your supposed childhood bestie? Absolutely no reason. You aren't controlling a detective, but she has enough of a good head on her shoulder to suspect certain things. Give this character more chance to do some snooping or speculating. The lack of ANY evidence I can throw at Samael in the final confrontation is so damn infuriating.
The one thing about Hazel I did like is that you were given ample opportunities to suspect shenanigans with Companion A or B for good cause. There were times when A or B's behaviors were definitely red flags. Those were clues that gave players fuel to start their conspiracy machine. AM is kind of going in that direction but falls really short in that department sadly. I do like the mystery angle in this one. The reveal of there
being more than 1 culprit
is good. Execution-wise, some of it seems like an after thought.
Hm yes, grabby noble with suspect rumor is found dead. And you are only telling me this late? AFTER sexy time? What a way to sober up. No time to spin some doubts or sow some mistrust? C'mon... Gus is right there too. Absolutely could do something with him since he IS Tara's brother. And hey... The whole murder thing really didn't really rattle him too much? That's a missed opportunity right there.
There's a really good framework already in place. Just needs more work on the content. Go into darker territories. Explore the nasty bits of human nature. I'm really interested to see where the sequel bait character is going to go in the next title.
A rather short but nice VN. The mystery is interesting even on multiple playthroughs if you don't learn the whole truth the first time. The main character is interesting enough as is your two romance options being complete at odds with each other even though it begs the question why you even hang out with one of them if you disagree with them on every level. You can be friends with different people but in such a stressful time where these kind of opinions really matter it seems weird to hang out with someone who is very much opposed to your beliefs consistently. My only real issue with the story is the fact a supposedly skilled, talented, and smart wizard can fail to simply word his questions better in certain scenes. It really makes me believe he is naturally talented but just a moron at the end of the day for not simply wording questions as 'Do you know what killed x' or "did you witness the death of y" and it would solve like the entire story in a very simple way. Another issue is the fact we see things our character wouldn't frequently which confuses me on the whole 'god looking into your history through you' setup. Since there is no way your character would know half the things the player knows. It helps understand the story but it kinda harms part of the mystery as you can kinda assume part of it and you wont be far off the mark. It is a pretty interesting story and I do suggest you give it a shot if you don't mind some of the things that seem a bit off with the story in certain areas that are designed just to keep the story going. My complaints are pretty specific things that might seem big in the review but in the actual VN its not a huge deal but there is a good chance you will start thinking about this stuff.
Decent Visual Novel.
