Though I lean slightly more on the positive side with this one, there are times where I wish Steam had a mixed recommendation button. As an important piece of video game history pertaining to the roguelike genre, this is awesome. For those who grew up with this game and want a trip down the rose-tinted alleyways of nostalgia, this is awesome. For someone who isn't blinded by nostalgia and wants a roguelike from ages past that you can sink your teeth into for hours on end, there are better options you can go with. For me, the biggest problem is that it's a bit too simple for my tastes and the speed of the gameplay is quite slow. The roaring you hear when the enemies are taking their turn doesn't exactly help, either. Of course, it could be the emulator that the game is running on, but then again, from what I've heard, it was slow on the C64 even back then. Also, I don't exactly know why, but this game is very easy to bug out for whatever reason. On a more positive note, it is a relatively easy game to learn. If you genuinely want it, get it, but get it at your own risk, as it will test your patience with its slow pace.
great game from the 80s
Fantastic - simple fun
thumbs up, but with caveats. I played this on my c64 back in the 80s. It was fun. Also, i never finished it. I wanted to finally finish it. Honestly, without copious save games (f1 && f5 are your best friends) i'd never have got through it. It's a nightmare without options. If you don't have some kind of nostalgic connection to this game, i doubt you'll enjoy it.
Insufferably slow. MUCH slower than the preview video, which cuts out a fair amount of the slow walking. On top of the walking being slow, the game FREQUENTLY pauses to make a roar sound. I would not mind the slow walking if not for the sheer multitude of game pause roars. After a while the roars are not terrifying, just annoying. Please let me explore the dungeon. Oh and q is auto rigged to kill your game, very cool. When you die get ready for a horrendously slow game over wipe screen. Oh and when you die, if you say no, you get dumped to a commodore-esque command entry screen. I think the only way out is to quit the game. Game is missing a tremendous amount of qol: No mention of your max hp, no mention of enemy hps, no quick indication of how much exp you get for a kill. Gold appears to be locked at 100 which falls off in usefulness since the amount of exp you need DOUBLES each level. I got to needing 3200 and at that point 25 ish gold simply isn't worth bothering to pick up. Needs more qol, less roars. Refunding.
I've remembered this game since I was in my early teens. The things about this game I like is being able to move around and collecting the gold to put it in the temple to gain experience points so that you can last longer in the game. The things about this game I dislike is not being able to move at the same time your enemies move, the unpredictability of what happens after you touch the white squares in the process of searching for potions and spells that heal and shield you, losing your maps when teleporting, and not being able to buy potions or spells when you bring the gold to the temple. The other thing about this game I dislike is that while progressing through the levels the enemies get faster and you get slower in regards to not being to move at the same time as your enemies do. Over all this game is fun to play.
This is the most "Rogue-like" game of them all, as it is basically a remake of the classic Rogue w/ improvements in visual aesthetics. However, and I am speaking specifically of this version, it's a slow, buggy, clunky mess that is a helluva lot more frustrating than fun. The controls are pretty unresponsive and you have to tap arrow keys multiple times just to move sometimes. That alone sucks the energy out of the game and makes me just want to go back to the super fluid and FUN Rogue. Luckily, I am only out a few bucks.
WHat a wonderful game! Iplayed this on a friends Vic20 in the early eighties and it was a blast. so fun to play this version, which wasnt as rudimentary as vic20 but still the exact same game. Warning it is tough and sometimes really just not fair!
They got rid of the permadeath in this version by allowing the player to save and reload at any time. I'm fine with saving runs, but they should work just like the original where they're deleted when the player dies. If they wanted to add an easier mode for a casual audience that's fine, but the normal difficulty should maintain the developer's intention.
It's a 40 year old game so don't expect too much when it comes to graphics or sound effects. But this baby still has what it takes. It is exciting to explore the dungeons, and you are always near death, giving you that Dark Souls-like feeling of not knowing if you will survive the next encounter with a monster. It has one annoying bug, you can't move while the sound effect is playing, the developers ought to fix this.
