Such a broken and buggy port. Controller support is scuffed, M+KB is way too sensitive even on lowest settings. Alt-Tabbing risks a coin flip if your game will crash. Wish I could enjoy this one more,
awesome game. if you genuinely thought there would be all 100 floors you're dumb.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, not even other SAO fans. Don't waste your time.
I'd recommend this game only to people that like the characters from Sword Art Online. The main draw of the game is seeing more interactions between Kirito and the various girls in the series. The other aspects of the game, from the main story to the gameplay itself, aren't particularly good. and you probably shouldn't play this game unless you intend on playing the other Sword Art Online games as those games follow this game's storyline (which is different from the anime and light novel).
Story
The story for the main part of the game exists. The game starts roughly around the end of the Aincrad arc in the anime at the 75th floor and then splits off into its own events within Aincrad. Unlike the anime,
the game's story goes through to the 100th floor
. New characters are introduced, and characters from up to the second season show up as well. Most of the main-story-related bits are incredibly short and infrequent except at the beginning and ending of the game. It's so sparse that I had forgotten about many details related to the story up until it was mentioned again 5 floors later. On the other hand, the slice of life and rom-com events between the main cast of characters and Kirito make up the majority of the story content, and they're enjoyable and can be somewhat funny at times. There's no massive character developments in these events, although game Kirito is even more of a generic "dense, anime harem protagonist" than his anime and light novel counterparts. On the other hand, the Hollow Area story (additional area and story that came with this remake) is good. Since it centered around a single heroine, I found myself liking her a lot more than the other characters. The English translation quality ranges from good to incorrect at times. Sometimes they'll get the subject or object of a sentence incorrect, and other times they'll just change the entire meaning of a sentence. For example, one of the female characters says, to Kirito, "すきです" (or "すきだ", I can't remember) and the translation has it as "I admire you," when both the context of the scene and the overalls tory would have it better translated as what Google Translate gives. Another notable example is translating "onii-chan" to Kirito's first name, even when there are other characters present. Given that it's both a minor plot point that people don't know each other's real names and part of the setting that people try to avoid talking about real-life topics, the translation just isn't aa a decent enough quality that I would recommend the story to people that don't understand a bit of Japanese. The game sometimes, very rarely, voices Kirito, and I can't tell why he isn't voiced in all scenes where all of the other characters have voice lines, There's a setting to disable his voicelines too, and you can customize his avatar, but the character is still inherently Kirito, so I can't see it being for "self-insert" reasons.
Gameplay
The gameplay is too easy, grindy, buggy, poorly explained, and overall bad. The gameplay is mostly just spamming attack skills (sword skills). Most sword skills have super armor, so it's unlikely that an enemy will interrupt you, and using enough sword skills in a row typically interrupts enemy attacks. Enemy AIs are like allied NPC AIs in that they spend the majority of the battle standing still and using an attack skill every 30 seconds. Auto attacks do almost no damage (both for allies and enemies), so unless you get attacked by multiple enemies or by significantly higher-level enemies, it's almost impossible for you to die. Enemies give extremely low amounts of XP for the amount you need to level up. Additionally, the game caps the amount of XP a single enemy can give you at around 6,000 (around 9,000 with XP multipliers). There are various other roadblocks to efficiently grinding, such as enemy respawn times, needing to defeat enemies at least 10 levels higher than you to get a decent amount of XP, and enemies de-aggroing after a bit. There's an achievement to reach level 200 (the text incorrectly says 150), but there's no way you'd even get near that level just by completing both stories. For reference, I'm still at level 180 at the time of this review, despite spending several hours specifically grinding XP. Besides grinding XP, you can grind materials and money too. Material grinding is for forging new weapons, but it's even worse than XP grinding because you end up being restricted to a single area waiting for enemies to respawn if you want a specific material. The drop rates are also bad. Money has no use in the game. Most of the things you can buy are immediately outclassed by stuff you can find in the Hollow Area, which you can access from the beginning of the game. The only thing you can craft is weapons, but unless you're going to complete the skill trees for every weapon, you'll probably only craft one or two weapons. The game has various annoying bugs. Perhaps the worst bug, outside of the game freezing when opening the Steam Overlay, occurs when an allied NPC kills an enemy with a skill that has a long animation. If you use an attack skill during this time, the skill won't activate but goes on cooldown anyways. There are other bugs, like the camera getting stuck if you activate a sword skill chain right when an enemy dies or enemies locking onto you when you have an effect that prevents that from happening. The in-game tutorials don't explain things well. They're too vague and unhelpful, such as saying you need to press the attack button at the "right time" to get an Exact Burst Attack, without telling you what the right time is. The explanation for sword skill chaining tells you that you can chain attacks when a purple flash shows up during a sword skill animation, but it neglects to tell the player that you might have to activate the next sword skill before, during, or after the purple flash shows up, depending on the skill you're using. The maps are also really simple. While there are technically "puzzles" to stop the player from progressing, most of it boils down to taking a small detour (in the same area) to activate a switch, kill an enemy, or open a chest. None of it is particularly interesting, and the Aincrad maps are all essentially the same. Coupled with the poor graphics and texture quality and repeated designs used throughout the game, I never wanted to revisit an area more than I had to. The Hollow Area maps, while much larger and less linear, still have nothing in them worth exploring. Chests give random items and weapons, rather than anything unique, so there isn't a particular need to go out of your way to find things. There are two "hidden" characters in the Hollow Area, but I'd recommend just looking at a guide rather than wasting a couple of hours walking from map to map. The Hollow Area is just so large with nothing interesting in it that it's even worse than the short and linear Aincrad maps; it's like playing vanilla Oblivion or Skyrim without using fast travel or a horse to get to areas. There's also a talking minigame with the main heroines, but it's frankly impossible to do without a guide. The heroine will say two lines, and then Kirito is given the option to respond with "..." or "Nice!" but there's no way to guess which one is correct unless you remember the specific lines that are said. The dialogue in it is also around 4-5 words, with like 10 variations for each heroine, so overall it doesn't really give any meaningful interactions with or insights on the character. However, it's necessary to unlock certain scenes, which are only a couple of lines long, so it's a necessary chore for people trying to 100% the game.
I don't know what's wrong with the performance. Usually its smooth, but in dungeons with large rooms it drops to 30 at times. Also game becomes really tedious towards the end. Hollow missions are super confusing.. I don't even know if I'm supposed to do them at my lvl. Anyways, fun game if you're REALLY into SAO and want to experience the last floors of Aincrad. As someone that really loves Aincrad and reads the progressive lightt novels, I had fun playing it. But I wouldn't really recommend it unless you're a diehard SAO fan and only if its on sale! ($3.5 or less.)
basic RPG game
TLDR: Only buy it if youre a die-hard sao fan and/or the game is on sale. The map is split in 2 sections: aincrad and the hollow area
Aincrad
The game starts off at floor 75, and lets you progress up to floor 100. Most of the floors look the same, and there arent any original enemies (by that i mean not being used in more than one floor) except for the bosses; its really a shame because i loved the enemies' designs. It took me about 20mins to clear each floor, and 5-6mins to kill the boss, and im not a good player at all. I barely learned the combat system, spamming skills and oneshot most of the regular enemies because i was almost always overlevel (i'll add more on that in the hollow area section). After clearing each floor new events appear in the events list: most of them (especially in the first 5 floors) are basically just boring fanservice. On the later floors they eventually become more interesting and less fanservice-y (i repeat, just less there is still a lot of fanservice later on), but never memorable. The story was ok, if it wasnt for the last bossfight
More like 10 different bossfights, I lost the count
which took way too long since all the bosses were health sponges that dealt little to no damage Party members are more like dumb npcs that will always be way underlevel (unless you grind for hours to level up each and every one of the girls) except for the overpower swords and armor that you can gift them.
Hollow Area
It's meant to be an endgame area, but the enemies in the first areas are not hard at all even for early game and its easier to levelup there. So i ended up completing the hollow area before floor 90 and being overlevel for the rest of the game. You can easily avoid high-level enemies in the hollow area, because the game warns you if you are underlevel (and those zones can be completely avoided to complete the main HA story)
In conclusion...
I enjoyed just 60% of the game because i really like the SAO franchise in general, but i wouldnt recommend buying it at full price (or buying it at all)
Любимая арка, замечательный геймплей и интересная история.
