I try to finish games before I review them, but shame on me for coming to this so late. Swirl W@tch is at once innovative and classic: everything new it brings feels so natural to the stealth game genre, yet still refreshingly original, complemented excellently by Sleeper Games' signature style and setting. It's cruel but fair, and knows how to put the pressure on. Even late into the game you'll be sweating bullets over a complex position or a near miss, which makes cleanly packing away the CorPo forces all the more cathartic in the end. There's plenty of room for skill expression and a variety of approaches to most situations, even nearly 100 hours in I've only seen about 75% of what it can offer. The controls take some getting used to, the tutorial is long and at times clunky, and runs can extend longer than is comfortable, especially without a save and quit, but I think this is forgivable for the rich gameplay depth and variety it manages to achieve. If you're willing to sit with it awhile and sink into Swirl W@tch, it will reward you for it time and time again. A thousand limbs uplift you!
I was surprised by how good this turned out to be. This great stealth game.
I repositioned a piece of debris to fly at a guard to block their view. I missed. Instead i ended up knocking the hostage ship out of their confinement and into a gas cloud so i can pick them up safely. Excellent experience. Took to forgoing primary weapons to focus more of my points on boarding actions, LIDAR detection, trackers, extraction balloons and the tranquilizer-esque hack-dart secondary weapon. With a bit leftover so i can call in more resupplies. In summary: MGS5 in a gas giant. Call that gaseous snake.
indie mgs 5
Great indie stealth game, basically the gameplay loop of MGSV mixed strategic/tactical planning elements with imperfect information on enemies that keeps things interesting. This results in very methodical gameplay which I personally enjoy a lot. It gives me similar feelings as Duskers and Highfleet when it comes to high tension methodical gameplay and on-the-fly problem solving when your plans go wrong. The game has a low cost of failure and even if you fail missions, you generally extract enough enemies to unlock a few upgrades. Soundtrack is great with dynamic tracks similar to splinter cell chaos theory that adapt to the awareness level of your opponents. Sound design as a whole is really high quality for such a small indie game. My one gripe which will slow my progress and lower my overall playtime is the inability to suspend a mission on quitting the game and resuming afterward. As you play, you unlock harder and harder procedurally generated missions, but the mission difficulty is also tied to the mission length, so the longest missions also have the hardest enemies. Harder enemies detect you more easily and are often packed more closely together, so for me this generally means I need to take even more time to scan, tag and take down enemies to make completing objectives possible. This would be fine if you could at least suspend your run when quitting the game and resuming when you relaunch the game. I understand the desire to prevent "save scumming", but the current lategame mission structure makes it unrealistic for me and probably many others to have to play a 2h run without being able to quit the game. If the dev could add a way to suspend a mission when you quit the game (or at least reload you from the start of the current phase for 2-3 phase missions) and maybe make unlocks a tad faster to acquire, I would see myself playing this game for a long time and highly recommend it. Here is an interesting video on save scumming and the concept of failure spectrum. I think this game handles it brilliantly, but it could be improved to make it more accessible to people who can't always play for 2 hours straight. People had this complaint for Returnal for a while as well and the devs eventually fixed it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go0BQugwGgM
A stealth game that draws mechanical inspiration from submarine warfare. The most innovative and engaging stealth game I've played in years, absolutely worth a buy if you like stealth games and I hope other developers draw on some of these ideas. There's a development tracker in fine print on the mission hub that discloses units sold, dev hours, and effective wage given revenue / dev hours. As of writing that wage for making this game is $1.53 / hour. I think that's just tragic given how great this game is.
A Really Janky, but Likable Game
tl;dr 1. Gorgeous retro style with very consistent theme 2. Surprisingly filled with features 3. Unfortunately quite janky and falls a little short 1. I like space I love space themed games. This game really hits the mark just having everything. We have spaceships, stations, space creatures, asteroids, gas clusters and so on. Sound design is also really good and gives the player much needed context during the hectic gameplay. 2. Feature-rich I didn't expect a fully featured stealth game that many bigger studios struggle to make and here we are. We have basic sight/audio mechanic, advanced teamwork AI/body hiding, really advanced LIDAR detection mechanic that this game centers around. The LIDAR is a dual-edged sword though as it makes navigating really time-consuming. 3. Janky Unfortunately the game is quite rough on the edges. It has some quite harsh frame drops that I can't really reproduce. The infamous tank control takes quite a lot of time to get used to and hiding "bodies" can become tedious because even slightly touching the wall makes a lot of noise. The no-menu approach is good for immersion but rotating the item menu gets old quite fast. Unlocks seem like they take forever to unlock(I'm nowhere close to unlocking ANYTHING in 3 hour playtime). The boarding animation looks really cool, but not so cool when I want to try the level again for the 3rd time. 4. Conclusion So do I recommend this game? If you really like space or space themed games(like me), yes, this game is very artsy and worth every penny. If you don't, well, It's unfortunately no.
I have not had a long time to play this game - but I think that it is a very interesting concept. It feels like a mix between old-school Metal Gear Solid if you were piloting a submarine. Here is my gameplay video going over the first 8 tutorial missions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alGJVO0rkjQ The Good: Unique Stealth-based gameplay that makes good use of "sound" Atmospheric graphics that make use of cover Tons of customization and upgrade options and tools Really tense music, perfect for the gameplay The not so good: Controls could be more intuitive Tutorials are a little hard to understand Could get repetitive over time No difficulty adjustment
Hello Im Skill Incarnate and Welcome to My Games Review Series. My reviews cover indie games that i have bought, had gifted to me and have been provided by developers for review. In this episode I check out one of the most unique games ive played this year with Swirl W@tch. This game was developed and published by Sleeper Games, who also worked on one of the greatest Space Action Games on steam Red Tether. Swirl W@tch is a Stealth Strategy Game that takes place in Deep Space, it occurs in the game universe as Red Tether. In this game the player takes the role of a member of the Swirl W@tch resistance group, who have taken on the impossible task of toppling the corrupt Megacorporation Corpco, who have a stranglehold on the galaxy. Faced with impossible odds, you decide to employ stealth and cunning instead of brute force. You will strike back at CorpCo, through a guerilla war waged via your stealth ship, specially designed to infiltrate enemy installations and disable your foes by hacking into their ships. The games trump card is the stealth system, which plays out like a high stakes game of battleships. Your ship is equipped with a sonar system, where enemies are detected via pinging the environment. Youll need to identify enemy patrol routes, avoid enemy patrols, isolate targets and disable them by hacking their ships and commandeering them for your own forces. But beware, your enemies can employ their own scouts to hunt you down, lay traps to detect and disable your ship, and corner you with squads of fighters. The campaign offers a variety of procedurally generated missions ranging from hijacking enemy convoys, corporate espionage via stealing classified enemy intel and a good old fashioned heist by breaking into enemy vaults for a payday. Successful missions mean additional members for swirl watch who bring new technology, upgrades and additional ships you can use. The game also features a wide array of weapons and tools which can be used as you progress to more dangerous missions. This is one of the most inventive stealth games ive ever played, building on the foundation started with the developers previous game Red Tether, but offering a more slow paced, methodical style of play. I highly recommend this game to those who enjoyed Red Tether, as well as stealth game enthusiasts looking for a different sort of experience Please note: All opinions in this video are my own.
