The Hyperspace Anthology is some of the best science fiction that I have had the pleasure of experiencing. The impression that the lore has left on me rivals the likes of Red RIsing by Pierce Brown and Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. The gameplay is also exceptional and unique. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes roguelites.
Started with Hyperspace Dogfights, loved the feel, and now I'm here years later. I don't know who Sleeper is/are, but they're honestly pretty good at making unique, mechanically-interesting games. I've never felt railroaded out of a strategy, and losing usually feels like it was my fault. The rogue-y elements are nice, progression looks out over a very diverse tree of cool ideas and varied build options, but the style won't be for everyone. Oh, and Sleeper? Sorry for taking H.D. from the high seas for so long, I bought the whole anthology now. Red Tether is weird.
A stealth game that draws mechanical inspiration from submarine warfare. The most innovative and engaging stealth game I've played in years, absolutely worth a buy if you like stealth games and I hope other developers draw on some of these ideas. There's a development tracker in fine print on the mission hub that discloses units sold, dev hours, and effective wage given revenue / dev hours. As of writing that wage for making this game is $1.53 / hour. I think that's just tragic given how great this game is.
Amazing game, kind of annoying having to wait for that one ship to pass by before you can take down a skiff guard that's also staring directly into a box factory but otherwise I think it's very good!
I very much like the ideas and mechanics here. It's just missing that addictive quality.
fantastic space submarine stealth. not unlike metal gear solid, its many systems and tools generate tense and thrilling scenarios. should sleeper games release any further content for swirl watch, paid or otherwise, i'd be there day 1. can't recommend this enough for anyone on the fence
Pretty good, challenging stealth game with a unique spin in using the LIDAR / SONAR systems as both your and your enemies' primary means of detecting things. Lots of gadgets with different ways to use them, such as using the flares for a distraction or a direct fire blinding tool in a pinch, letting you get creative in how you approach your objectives. There is also a lot of ship variety among the enemies, who they themselves are capable of adapting their behavior over the course of a mission. This, combined with the randomized nature of the missions, keeps the game exciting.
A Really Janky, but Likable Game
tl;dr 1. Gorgeous retro style with very consistent theme 2. Surprisingly filled with features 3. Unfortunately quite janky and falls a little short 1. I like space I love space themed games. This game really hits the mark just having everything. We have spaceships, stations, space creatures, asteroids, gas clusters and so on. Sound design is also really good and gives the player much needed context during the hectic gameplay. 2. Feature-rich I didn't expect a fully featured stealth game that many bigger studios struggle to make and here we are. We have basic sight/audio mechanic, advanced teamwork AI/body hiding, really advanced LIDAR detection mechanic that this game centers around. The LIDAR is a dual-edged sword though as it makes navigating really time-consuming. 3. Janky Unfortunately the game is quite rough on the edges. It has some quite harsh frame drops that I can't really reproduce. The infamous tank control takes quite a lot of time to get used to and hiding "bodies" can become tedious because even slightly touching the wall makes a lot of noise. The no-menu approach is good for immersion but rotating the item menu gets old quite fast. Unlocks seem like they take forever to unlock(I'm nowhere close to unlocking ANYTHING in 3 hour playtime). The boarding animation looks really cool, but not so cool when I want to try the level again for the 3rd time. 4. Conclusion So do I recommend this game? If you really like space or space themed games(like me), yes, this game is very artsy and worth every penny. If you don't, well, It's unfortunately no.
