The prequel tries to break the horror element, introducing more gameplay to make it more focused on exploration, fighting enemies that are blocking your way if necessary. The in-game art might look simple at first glance, although you can see the details that are being put in each dungeon. Despite having the same dungeon layout, all dungeons revolve around a specific theme in mind, letting you see the whole area in a completely new look. Moreover, new enemies and bosses that are introduced in each dungeon are also tailored to the theme.
Story
To be honest, I didn't find much correlation between this game with the sequel, Camp Sunshine, despite having played it before starting this game. The only connections that I found between both games are the introduction of one character and the cutscene that is being told at the end of the game. The mystery that was causing the whole incident on the sequel might be related to this, although the game never tells it in detail. There isn't much to be told to the story either. It's Halloween, and you and your friends decided to explore an abandoned mansion. The rest of the story will be told after you progress the plot, giving the way for the final boss to shine. The game never goes much into details on everything, whether the antagonists or what happened to other characters. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2732699023 Tapes are supposed to give you more info about the lore, but ended up being useless because of their lack of content. They will tell you about the mansion owner way before the incident happened, which should be already known if you have played the game. Moreover, everything is told by voice. Don't get me wrong though. The sound is clear, but since I suck at listening, I didn't get everything that was said. Also, you can't replay the tape after you played it either, so you might want to save your game before listening to it again.
The Game
Gameplay The game still has fetch quests like its predecessor, albeit with more variations. Fetch quests will be the trigger of your travel to the other dimensions, letting you explore a dungeon with a certain theme. Two of them still revolve around fetch quests, although enemies will also be positioned for you to fight. The character's walking speed is very slow. You can dash to speed it up, but the bar that you use to dash and attack is shared, so you must keep it available in dangerous places. It can be taxing to re-explore the mansion several times after you finished a dungeon to find new fetch quests and secrets because of it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2732710599 Combat You can attack enemies, but killing them takes time. Most enemies require more than one hit to kill, and there is a long delay before you can attack again. It takes time to wait for the cooldown, especially when there are a lot of enemies to kill. Furthermore, some enemies can't seem to be killed no matter how many times I attacked them. This makes it useless to fight the enemies unless you want to clear them out for your peace of mind. Despite having varied mechanics, bosses are passive. You don't need to have an insane reflex speed to dodge their attacks - it's up to you to remember their attack patterns and when to hit them. People who are too used to playing difficult action-adventure games might find the boss to be boring, especially since some bosses can take time to kill. I still enjoyed the variation though. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2734754649 Length and Difficulty I restarted the game from the beginning after playing it for 2.1h since the game softlocked me, which has already been fixed in v1.1. It doesn't take long before I reached where I was at though. I finished the game in 4.1h, although judging from my earlier playthrough, it's safe to say that the game is 4-5h long. However, I didn't find all secrets that the game has at that time. Achievement hunters should expect grinding for an extra hour or two to get one achievement. As for the difficulty, the game is mostly on the easy-medium side. Problems The game lacks a lot of QoL features. There is no keybinding, and the default control scheme is not friendly to me. I keep on forgetting which button to press whenever I wanted to attack or simply talk to an NPC. The game also causes problems in 140Hz monitors. I had to change it to 60Hz in the third dungeon because the game takes up too much memory, making the game unplayable. All issues have already been known by the developer.
Conclusion
Sunshine Manor feels like a mix of various genres to me: there are fetch quests that are commonly found in adventure games, boss battles that require you to think to beat them, and 2D platforming segments that can be tricky to traverse. The horror elements are toned down in this game, surprising you with the sudden appearances of enemies with loud SFX in some places. Although the game can feel odd from the lack of QoL features, I still enjoyed the game. It was fun to explore the dungeons and figure out how to beat the bosses. I am always eager to see what the game has in store whenever I entered new dungeons, and it never disappoints me. I could recommend buying the game, although you might want to buy it on a sale because of the issues and length.
[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is this game a masterpiece? Hm, I didn't even like it when I first played it. It certainly is no perfect masterpiece, but as long as you know what to expect, it is a quite enjoyable experience. Even my kids all played it after watching me. It starts slow, the story is a bit stupid... but after you solve the first puzzles, it gets good and you get hooked. And, contrary to some games, it gets better. It is a simple game, just explore your sourroundings, memorize the house/realms (or draw a map), use items (you can only carry up to 3), don't die in the platforming sequences and don't get killed by the monsters. You are a little girl, trapped in a large haunted house where awful things happened a few years ago. It has some very strange (and often murderous) inhabitants, but also a bunch of trapped ghosts who help you (and you free them from their eternal prison). There is a demon around, and he is really evil. Use your psychic powers whenever he appears (one button press). You will have to traverse through a few small ghost realms, all in their distinctive style (and with different challenges). You can summon an aura around yourself to damage evil spirits, but most of the time you search for something to help you solve the puzzles. Gamepad works fine and the soundtrack is memorable. It is like an 8-bit horror game on a 5 1/4 floppy disc, but with today's amenities (but without cloud saves). It has puzzles like an adventure (find item, use it at the right spot), a bit action like in the isometric games from yesteryear (platforming, fighting monsters using your psychic power, although simply avoiding them is often the better choice), all wrapped up in a (silly) horror story. Simple, short (ignore my Steam playtime, it has a bug and continues to run after you quit), but rather good, after all.
«Вселенная постоянно творит волшебство. Ты сама полна волшебства!»
(с). Из игры Fran Bow Sunshine Manor – 8-битное лампово-кровавое хоррор приключение, создающее скорее уютную совсем слегка пугающую атмосферу, которая работает больше как сказка на Хэллоуин, не забывая добавить резервуар крови и не превращая полученный игровой опыт в последующий поход к психиатру.
==========

Camp Sunshine https://store.steampowered.com/app/457570/Camp_Sunshine/
(W, A, S, D/ Up, Down, Left, Right) Взаимодействие: (J) Круговая атаки Пси-болами: (K) Рывок-метеоризм: (H) Если к перемещению вопросов нет, то всё остальное, немного неудобно. She accepts and no sooner than a minute, they get embroiled in spooks and taken. All except for Ada who discovers she may be special after all. Can she survive the night or end up one of its victims~
[+] PROS;

:) WHO GHOST THERE?
Top-down exploration and haunted house simulator, where you locate the lost souls of the manor with some real nerve and help them cross over. Your tools include an honest, soft-hearted demeanor when interacting with said kind. A dash to get places quicker and avoid incoming hits. And a pinky, psionic energy that encircles around you to manipulate matter or calm friggin’ spirits and a couple of other shockers! Primarily you have to satisfy your client by performing fetch quests, while fending off unwanted and surprising denizens of the manor. There are less puzzles that don’t belong, thank goodness. But you do have to be alert in order to get accustomed with the sudden genre shifts be it in a required story sequence, hidden areas or super-secret casual minigames! We’re talking adventure turned platformer and then shooters, followed by a boss at the end of each! Your first luxurious stay will most likely not exceed 5 hours unless you’re dead set on searching for collectibles and coming back for perfect run achievements~ TIPS: 1) Your three inventory slots could get you into a bind. So be wary what you pick! 2) Save sparingly if you want certain flawless achievements. There are also only 3 slots!! 3) Can’t find any other outfits? Turn back the clock & think! Then try the attic.
:) EIGHTY-BIT YOUR TONGUE!?
It isn’t as detailed as Camp Sunshine (CSS) visually, but it is more aesthetically pleasing with vibrant shades that is almost joyful. But the eponymous manor is towering in comparison to Ada and dim all throughout! Then come the otherworld portions, where they each become interestingly hellish but also diverse. Ensuring your time in the manor will be touristy and oh there’s a precious and GNARLIE surprise of a companion too! But not just that, the cartoon portraits are very distinctly and appealingly drawn. Reminiscent of a bygone yet timeless Hanna Barbera animation. Even Ada looks like a cross of Daphne & Velma! If that sounds dandy, wait till you hear the soundtrack. Still possessing that unwavering 80s mood channeling John Carpenter’s synth signature which serves as a clear inspiration. But it still remains equally original, chipper and dreary. With another kick-ass credit song- it’s on a two-hit streak now!
:) A TRUSTY PSYCHIC…
The story this time doesn’t begin with a sock stuck in its mouth or hands tied behind its back- providing more context and premise before the boos show up! It does go on to pave how the sequel gets materialized in a satisfactory fashion but sticks with certain aspects that I had hope would phase out… That said, the complete plot comes off as half of a Scooby Doo episode or rather movie. Which just made goosebumps pop out upon hearing it myself… That show was my heart! With the other half handling like it’s a mashup of The Twilight Zone. As much as I am skeptical of certain reveals of abilities, the protagonist is empathetic and sweet so that wore me down and I feel a renewed fire for whatever comes next~
:) SHOPPING FOR GLOSSARY~
Whereas CSS was predominantly just a “slasher” and museum of a slew of 80s. Sunshine Manor incorporates elements beyond that realm and adopts more of horror in its broader sense… But also worships those genres that came before it and its eventual sequel. Now it’s an ironclad time machine that travels to-and-fro that decade and its neighboring periods. As someone who didn’t grow up playing those, it’s invigorating and shockingly feel-good. But don’t be misled, despite its weirdness- to which it itself has gone on record to say several times. It still stands its ground in the blood and gore content, which is more graphic than anything CSS has shown! Mr. Sunshine’s tale of greed and demise is a bitter pill to swallow, presumably he wasn’t the first. Not by a long shot~ https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2713336715
[-] CONS;
:( WHERE ARE YOUR MANORS…! I have no idea why this bothers me as much as it did, but the game- even with its dipping into as many genre sauces. It can’t escape the fact that it’s just one giant fetch quest after another! First in the usual albeit creepy iteration of the manor and then later on in their otherworldly versions… Some objectives are hidden in that you won’t know how many to find or when to report back to the quest givers, some aren’t~ :( DAMN… SUN. Which gets aggravated, when you factor in the tardy pace of walking regardless of the implement of dashing. As a matter of fact, the game in its entirety is slow with the cutscenes that can’t be skipped over. Or the difficulty spike that occurs later on, with fewer margins for error and saves are spaced further apart. I specifically recall having to redo the 3rd world sequence countless times and having to sit through the sprites’ graceful strides as if the belle of the ball~
BUGS:
x Lamps work fine initially and then proceed to do their own thing. x Sprite gets stuck in limbo if you attack the ballerina ghost from an incorrect angle. x Major slow down and dip in frame rates cause the final hit against boss connected but didn’t register! x Went off the map and through a wall. X Took two chunks of my heart instead of one; should only have counted my falling in the pit but it also stacked the fireball damage as they were aligned.
NITPICKS:
~ Improper contractions used. ~ Key bindings cannot be changed and have awkward controls. ~ Reminder to look up controls when pausing; I went through whole game without knowing I could dash. ~ Unskippable cutscenes!? ~ The soul orb and inventory interface are always present and muddle your view of the map.
"- SETTING THE SUN FOR ANOTHER DAY~"
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2713335911 Last Words? Camp Sunshine’s prequel not just looks back, it itself fondly goes back in time & genres. Maybe it tries to appease too many but that’s also how it shines! Dark yet bright in a MANOR of speaking~ If you liked the chronological sequel Camp Sunshine but yearn and are jonesing for a more bizarre love letter to founding genres. If you love the cuddly spookiness in a greater attention getting itty-bitty style! Then this prequel is without a doubt worth exploring, enjoying even if it’s someplace you’d normally deem as where the sun don’t shine~
8.8 / 10

Letting Fossil Games know that they’re my ray of sunshine and I lit up when they agreed to give me a key!

Don't forget to follow my curator DaRevieweD for more games!!
Sunshine Manor was a great game! I didn't know about this game until the Developer came to me and gave me a copy to try on stream (plus a copy of Camp Sunshine). My stream had SO much fun watching through the play through and many of them subsequently went to purchase the game on Steam. Pros: *Soundtrack - this soundtrack is the best part of the game! It's banger as ♥♥♥♥! *Battle system - the attack with your Psychic ability is great *Auto Use of items - You auto use items when you need to use them *Costume Room *Dog -- best character & I hope they make a game just playing at the doggo! *Controller support (used XBox 1 Controller) Cons: *No healing items - You can heal at save points or by buying at a vending machine if you have a coin (randomly dropped from enemies) *Only 3HP (on 4th hit you die) *Not as strong of a story as Camp Sunshine *No resolution to the outcome of
your friend's fate
https://www.seravium.com https://twitch.tv/seravium
This is the NES horror game that I always wanted. The devs have such a love of 70s/80's horror and 8-bit games, and it shows. There are tons of references to classic horror movies and video games (and at least one modern game, too, and maybe more that I missed), but they don't feel intrusive -- if one doesn't get them, that's fine, but it's a treat for hardcore horror fans like myself. I expected this to be really scary, and it was, but not in the ways that I thought it would be. I don't want to give anything away, but I'll just say that this game plays with your expectations and takes some great story and gameplay turns along the way. I love that it took me only 6 hours to beat. I enjoy huge games that take 40+ hours, but they can feel overwhelming at times -- I put 60+ hours into Watch Dogs: Legion, and I had a great time, but I stopped before I even finished the campaign because it was just too much, and I'd had enough fun. And I already play For Honor regularly (2,000+ hours) and I have only so much time for other live games like Chivalry 2, so Sunshine Manor hit a sweet spot. This game moved quickly, none of the levels were too long, and the game never wore out its welcome. It's not that difficult, but I didn't mind, because the vibe and story were so good. And it's really, really funny, but never at the expense of scares or tension. The art direction is great, the sound design is right on and really creepy, the music changes perfectly from scary to action-driven, and the animation is smooth with tons of character (one lumbering monster was especially well-done). It's impressive what the team (I think it's only two people?) was able to pull off. And the Shadow Man is very scary. The level design is very clean and clear, and I didn't find myself wandering around aimlessly, which is a huge pet peeve of mine, especially in horror games -- if it takes too long to figure out what to do, the spell wears off. The devs don't hold your hand, but if you pay attention you're able to quickly pick up what you're supposed to do with regards to both mechanics and story progression. The controls are butter-smooth, which was a big, pleasant surprise for me. Not that I was expecting them to be bad, but these are really good. Performance was excellent, with no stuttering or bugs (except for one bug which was patched immediately after launch, but it didn't impede my progress or fun). I give this a huge recommend to anyone, but especially people who have played a lot of classic games, specifically NES or Super NES, and love horror. Big congrats to the Fossil Games team. 10/10
Only an RPG in the sense that I feel it was made in RPGmaker. That's not necessarily a bad thing, some RPG-maker games are A+. In this case though, the pacing killed it for me. There's a lot of running around where you've already been, which is exacerbated by your character's very slow movement speed. You can sprint - sort of - but for about 2 seconds with a recharge time that feels like it's at least 6. A fair number of enemies are indestructible (again, not really an RPG) which means that as you're backtracking, you'll also be running into enemies that you can't do anything about, multiplied by however many times you enter that room. The final blow was the
maid quest where you're collecting the garbage.
Regardless of how many pieces are remaining, she always just says "at least one piece", which isn't the biggest deal - the issue though is, I've been through every accessible room in the house like 5 times, I swear, and there's still one somewhere apparently. I don't have it in me to look a 6th time. This wasn't helped by whole "you can only carry one rock at a time" thing, which as far as I know has no other reason to be a limit except to make you do more backtracking. I really liked the game graphically, and the writing didn't make me want to tear my eyes out, which is rare for these RPGmaker games. If you have the patience to check it out, check it out, but if you're someone who doesn't enjoy backtracking, you'd be best advised to stay away.
This is one of those games that you need to play in a dark room with headphones on. The music is a trip down nostalgia-lane and the call backs and references to old school movies are epic. The tension and mood of the game encapsulate the retro gaming vibe perfectly. I get caught off guard by some of the scares and sound fx too; and the overall sound design is spot on. Seeing where this is leading, I can't wait for another game from Fossil Game!
Sunshine Manor sheds the RPG Maker appearance of the first game and ramps up the cartoonishness in both graphics and tone. The look is perfect, though I think they overdid the unshakable pluckiness of the heroine -- even for such a lighthearted setting as this. There is no hiding from an unkillable slasher this time; gameplay is all exploration, obstacle avoidance, and leisurely aggression, which provides a stimulating, though seldom exhilarating, experience. It's best described as a short 80s cheese-horror Zelda. Sure, the writing could be tighter -- but it looks great, sounds great, and is never boring. It has quite a bit more personality and polish than the first game, even if the gameplay is less tense. You search a decaying mansion for earthbound ghosts, then dive through portals to free them -- flip to a Monster Party hellscape carpeted with flesh-and-blood lasagna, populated by demons that give off a Real Ghostbusters vibe: lumpy, brightly hued abominations with a little Artzybasheff in there for good measure. My type of demon! I enjoyed both games in the Sunshineverse, and I'll be sure to snap up the next as soon as it's released. The dev seems to keep getting better!
Sunshine Manor is an 8-bit horror RPG and prequel to the 2016 16-bit game Camp Sunshine. Players take on the role of Ada, a young girl dared by her friends to enter a haunted house where she encounters demons, ghosts and a lot of blood! Overall, it is a spooky and fun experience. The 8-bit pixel art graphics fit the game perfectly and add a soft edge to the high levels of gore whilst the retro soundtrack helps to instil a sense of fear and really amps up the creepiness of the game’s horror elements. The gameplay is varied and exciting, presenting a slight challenge that is satisfying rather than frustrating to overcome. This title will appeal to a wide range of players, is great value for money offering 4-6 hours of playtime and is very easy to recommend!
