Sunshine Manor is an 8-bit horror RPG and prequel to the 2016 16-bit game Camp Sunshine. Players take on the role of Ada, a young girl dared by her friends to enter a haunted house where she encounters demons, ghosts and a lot of blood! Overall, it is a spooky and fun experience. The 8-bit pixel art graphics fit the game perfectly and add a soft edge to the high levels of gore whilst the retro soundtrack helps to instil a sense of fear and really amps up the creepiness of the game’s horror elements. The gameplay is varied and exciting, presenting a slight challenge that is satisfying rather than frustrating to overcome. This title will appeal to a wide range of players, is great value for money offering 4-6 hours of playtime and is very easy to recommend! Sunshine Manor is a 2D Indie Horror game. From the trailers of the game you can see a plethora of things you may encounter on your travels of the disheveled manor of a famed entertainment personality turned evil by his own success, who then slaughtered his family and now he and his manor remain a local haunted story. A group of friends dare to enter the Sunshine Manor one Halloween night unaware of the danger that lurks ahead. You soon discover powers that must be used to find the captured friends you entered with and uncover a way out of Sunshine Manor before it's too late. The game is beautifully done in all aspects. The art is very refined in the game and the bold nature of the design has significant impacts on the theme and story. The game is dark and at times gruesome and truly surpassed my expectations entirely. The imagery is nostalgic and yet unfamiliar and new. Even when I was watching the trailers before I played the game, I knew I was getting something that has been well refined and a lot of heart and soul that went into creating such a polished artistic game. Many aspects of the game make a game good or bad. Besides great art and design, I find that the soundtrack is just as responsible for the experience. Sunshine Manor features a retro and synthwave inspired soundtrack that creates a full bodied atmosphere to the game. The other sounds that are creepy (or scary) also add to that lush 8bit environment. The experience would not be the same on mute. Gameplay is unique and interesting in the fact that the Manor is poorly lit, there's a finite amount of distance around you that is illuminated and the rest of the areas surrounding you are dark. This makes stumbling into scary stuff more of a shock or a surprise, because usually I wasn’t expecting it. The differing realms also added a great variety to the game and made me eager to discover and unlock more. All around I loved the game. I had an issue in my game, and the devs patched it almost immediately. I have no big complaints other than the fact it's almost necessary you play this with a controller. I also wish there were some more options in the menu (no windowed mode). Otherwise, this game is near perfect and I have enjoyed every minute I have spent in the Manor. The macabre nature of the game and soundtrack make this an absolute chef’s kiss! I first learnt about the Sunshine series through the kickstarter of Sunshine Manor. I'd never played Camp Sunshine, but Sunshine Manor is a prequel and I really liked the pixel art shown on the kickstarter page. Once the game was released, I jumped in and was blown away instantly by the synth music. Each track gives a feeling of nostalgia for the 80s and I soon found myself downloading the soundtrack and listening to it, when I wasn't playing the game. The pixel art is awesome as well and along with the music, creates a great atmosphere which masterfully switches between dread, fear and...comical. The number of times The Shadowman managed to make me jump was equal to the number of times I saw The Shadowman and was achieved by sound and visibility. There are many secrets and easter eggs hidden within the mansion and I've hardly scratched the surface. I finished the main story of the game, but I plan to do another run to see what else I can uncover, I wonder what that games console is for… I thoroughly enjoyed my time so far with Sunshine Manor and recommend this gem to everyone reading this review.
Cute, but not cute enough for how annoying it's checkpoint system is.
tres bon
Very cute game - reaching the end - love when horror meets pixels because I feel like its contradictory. Cute vs Gore(ish) - seems to be a relatively fast game! Definitely a good pass time!
Had played the first game previously and was surprised to find out during random browsing that it had gained a sequel. Liked the now all-custom assets and the personality of the new protagonist, interested in seeing where the series goes from here.
Just started playing it and I am actually loving it. Here is the gameplay video https://youtu.be/LENivpY_VqA
First Impressions Review: Sunshine Manor is a pretty quaint game. The pixel style is done really well here will lots of detail. They pulled off the atmosphere, it's cute but at the same time grotesque. Gameplay consist of exploration, running away, and slight combat. For the price and quality I'd say it's a pretty good pick up. Check out my gameplay preview (first 30 minutes or so) for Sunshine Manor here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd6L_OLHoEs
Sunshine Manor is a really nice mix of 80s Nostalgia, Horror and classic games such as Earthbound with Zelda-like elements thrown in for good measure! You can tell that the developers of the game really threw as much as they could into it (and from what I've read, it's only two people!). The graphics are beautiful, with classic pixel art and a really great atmosphere bolstered by the soundtrack (which is absolutely fantastic too!). Looking forward to getting further into this game ... well done Fossil Games!
