I had serious trouble writing this review, because I'm a decade long fan of the Sunrider franchise. I mainly bought this game to support the developers, hoping this would be a kind of fun spin-off. But I just couldn't connect with it. Both in terms of gameplay and story. If this was a stand-alone game, with completely different characters, different geographical names, different everything, I probably would have given this game a bigger chance. But playing it now felt incredibly jarring, because it felt as a medieval remake of the first Sundrider and all the names are the same. It just screamed 'wrong' in my head, the entire time I was playing it. The game feels like a fan fiction, or a filler, for the main franchise. There's not nearly enough emphasis on telling a story in a natural flow that would make sense. It just felt like a rapid-fire remake of the first game, that just wanted to rush through the main story points, without exploring them in the depth they required. For example you rescue Asaga and Chigara in the first 2 minutes of the game, they join the crew immediately without much explanation of who they are or how they got there, and everyone almost immediately goes along with it. A very sharp contrast to how that mission played out in the original game. It feels like you're expected to know who these characters are and just rush through the story. But its so rushed, it completely breaks immersion and it doesn't feel like a stand-alone story anymore. It feels like a filler for the main Sunrider. If you just wanted to make a fun side-story in the Sunrider universe, you could have just made a side-story. Kaito Shields and the crew go to Space Okinawa and hang around there, and have Space Pirates attack or something. Or have them go to a holo-deck and pretend to be pirates, or go to virtual reality and PACT attacks them inside the virtual world, I don't know, but there's so many options. But it would be in the main franchise, you wouldn't have to re-introduce the characters, the lore is already established, and you can just immediately launch into this pirate side-story. It would help immensely with immersion and investment in the characters and story. But as it is now, I just see my favorite characters in a bizarre setting, but they're not themselves anymore, so I can't connect with them. The story is rushing too fast without letting the scenes breathe, and I really can't connect with the gameplay. It just felt too complicated and difficult to use. I just don't understand who this game was made for, people who've never played Sunrider will have trouble understanding what's happening, and long-time fans like me, I suspect, will have trouble getting immersed in this game. I only played it for roughly 30 minutes, and it just made me want to play the original franchise again. If I can humbly offer advice to the developers, invest heavily into marketing of the original Sunrider series, because it doesn't get nearly enough credit or coverage, and please invest into developing the next installment in the main series, Sunrider 5 etc. Waiting 8 years between the main games is... a long time. But I do want this game studio to succeed and keep growing, so I wish the best in the future
It's just ridiculous. You expect me to enjoy the game that tells me exact same story in fast paced manner that I already know from previous games, and offers slowest and most boring gameplay in entire series? I don't care at this point. Entire story feels like the characters already familiar with each other and sitting at the round of some tabletop game named "Sunrider Legends Tactics", playing as themselves, trying to act like they don't know each other alongside trying extremely hard to convince the player that he don't know what will happen next. I don't know for whom that game is made. If for those who played series before it's just way too repetitive story-wise since you've heard it all before. If for those who never played Sunrider, it just fails to maintain interest of the player due to fast and short change of events especially if you're not familiar with characters from previous games. Not to mention reused outdated static 2D sprites instead of creating new and fresh looking L2D.
I'm really enjoying this so far. In a nutshell, this is an Alternate Universe retelling of the original Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius game that released over 11 years ago (and that you can pick up for free if you haven't tried it yet). Instead of a space opera, we're now in a fantasy setting, and instead of space ships, we have naval warfare. While a lot of the story beats are similar, there's enough difference and 'what if' variations in this story to make it fun for fans of the first game like me. There's no English voice acting, but I'm probably one of the only people who misses that from the first game (even though it was just for battle. Instead though, characters are fully voiced in Japanese for pretty much all lines. The gameplay has some similarities to the previous Sunrider games, but the naval combat is honestly quite a bit different. A very big component in this game is 'ship boarding', where if you're next to a ship you can have your crew try to take it over by entering a turn-based in-person RPG-style battle. If you win, you can even capture the enemy ship, which makes for a fun challenge when some of the 'boss' ships are powerful and unique. You have to be careful though, because enemies can also board your ships, so you don't want to spread your crew too thin (your crew here is mostly the main characters, although there are some weak mercenaries you can buy who at least fight ok). As previous players might expect, the main character Captain Shields is completely useless in these in-person RPG-style battles, and strictly serves as the game's tactician; this wasn't surprising, but I was kind of hoping he could maybe do something. But Ava does participate in these fights and is quite a strong character, which makes up for it. To illustrate how important these RPG-style battles are in this game, unlike previous games, you don't actually spend gold to upgrade your ships' statistics (you can buy them better parts over time, but honestly the amount of gold you spend on your ships is pretty small, and most upgrades come in the form of boarding and capturing enemy ships). Instead, most of your gold will be spend upgrading the stats of your crew for these in-person battles (only important 'story' characters can be upgraded, like Ava, Asaga, etc.); that's basically this game's version of upgrading your ships in previous games. In terms of negatives, I do think there are some quality of life things there are missing that would've been nice to have. A big one if a minimap for the naval battles; the maps are quite large and even fully zoomed out the amount of map you can see at any one time is pretty small, forcing you to manually scroll around to see what's around you. A minimap would've really helped here. This may just be me, but it also took me awhile to figure out how to scroll around the map (you can't use your mouse, you have to use the arrow keys by default, although I remapped that to WASD). And while I don't have the older games up, I seem to remember them having an easier save system, with many autosaves per battle and also outside of battle; it's difficult to describe, but there are less autosaves than previous games, and the save system is more difficult to use (it also takes quite awhile to save and load, whereas the older games were nearly instandt, and I'm on a high-end PC). Minor gripes aside, I'm having a ton of fun with this game, and recommend it to anyone looking for a good tactical game or who wants to see an alternate retelling of the first story in the Sunrider series (and if you enjoy this, check out the other games).
Sunrider Legends Tactics —

Overall a fun and enjoyable game, but its hard to recommend over the main series, especially at full price. If you want more Sunrider, definitely worth checking out. a good 15-30h game. If you haven't played any Sunrider games..... I'd personally either recommend starting from the 1st (2) game(s) (Mask of Arcadius), then moving on to Liberation Day (3) and Captain's Return (4) if you're interested in the story, or if interested in JUST the gameplay picking up Captain's Return. Though I'm not recommending against getting Legends if you never played 1-4. To get it out of the way: If you care about the "Mature Content Warning" [Minor Story Spoilers]:
Its basically a bunch of Onsen Scenes, 1 Boss Fight.
and some Dialog. It is definitely not a focus of the game if that disappoints/relieves you. A bit of a Quick note about the System Requirements, while the devs say "Please note the system requirements we've given are purely based on the lowest specs we have available at Love in Space HQ and where we've then gone on to have a smooth with this setup running the game.", with a 9600k and a 2070, the game ran perfectly fine, HOWEVER I noticed the game seems to be heavy on the GPU, running ~30% CPU and ~70% GPU at a few moments I checked. If I had to guess likely due to the water, shadows, and effects. If you are having difficulty playing the game smoothly, it seems to likely be GPU related. Story: Legends has a.... interesting story for those that have played the previous 4 games, [Story Spoilers]
Legends is basically a Mix of 1-4 mixed in with Unique plot points of its own, but with a Fantasy Setting instead of Space.
While I wont say Legends has the best story, its decent and enjoyable on its own. There are 3 Main endings that can be obtained based on your choices and if you are playing NG+, meaning you need to play through the game fully 2 times to get all 3 endings (assuming you make saves to reload back to at key moments). The story can be slightly serious to just being comical at times. When completing the NG+ ending [Vague Story Spoilers]
Each of the Individual Endings for each character feels mostly wholesome in a way, though I do wish they were a bit longer.
It does feel enjoyable though to have a Sunrider game that feels fully complete and doesn't need a sequel. Gameplay: For those that have played the other 4 games, the easiest way to explain how gameplay works is "What if you took Captain's Return, and changed space to the Ocean". While it shares many similar aspects, upgrades/improving is vastly different, along with there being turn based RPG combat. Each Character can be upgraded with $, Items can be looted from enemy ships, Unwanted Items can be sold for more $, and characters can gain both Ship Upgrades (For ships they are in), Character Upgrades, and Gameplay buffs by gaining affection points based on your choices. The Difficulty felt ok, I played on "Ahab's Whale" (hardest non-custom difficulty) and it felt easier then the mainline games by far. Issues/Bugs...... (As of 8/4, before the 1st post launch update): The game isn't... perfect by far, going to give a bit of a bullet points of things I didnt like or bugs I encountered -The RPG style combat felt..... very basic... there are times I think the game would have been better without it, but mainly I think it needed more time/love -The Music for the RPG combat.... if I'm not mistaken there was only 1 track, and after my playthroughs hearing it was starting to drive me insane, especially when after winning a boarding fight the music wouldn't stop till something forced it to change tracks, such as ending your turn. -While not something I hated, I found a bug with certain RPG fights [Story AND gameplay spoilers]
If you are in one of the fights where you can replace defeated party members with other members, If Maray has Resurrect, she can Revive the dead members DESPITE having a 4 person party, doing so on the final boss left me with a 6 person party that the game CLEARLY did not support nor intend to happen.
-When clicking various menu options, often times the game like to click things below the menu, causing you to make accidental actions that often times can be hard to notice or hard to reverse, requiring to start over. -When getting the bad end, the game attempts to give you advice on how to get the other ending [Story Spoilers]
The Advice feels massively misleading the way it is worded, telling you to "Head to a certain quest and learn how to do something", "or you can load the save the game told you to make at a certain moment.". They way it felt worded to me was that I "messed up" by not doing a quest I fully did, when the line about the quest felt misleading, the only mistake was my choice at the moment the game told me to save at.
-You lose all your ships in NG+..... which felt a bit bad considering how hard I tried to collect most of the story related ships.... and you only get NG+ when doing the normal ending, getting the True end or the Bad end does not result in a NG+ game. -NG+ is a "harder game" then your 1st playthrough, but the RPG battles don't feel different at all while the Sea Battles feel a bit harder? They add in special ships that have names from the Mainline games with better loot but they unfortunately don't stick out at all among the masses, if you didn't know or forgot a name it is VERY hard to determine which ships are the special ones outside checking each ship's loot. -I wish the game had more voice acting, there are a few moments that felt lacking because there wasn't any, and the main character not having a voice at all was severely disappointing, while it has been awhile since I played the mainline games I swear at least 1 or more of them had the main character voiced. Overall was a fun game If i had to give it a number value id say 7/10? But as said before while I can decently recommend to those who love the series, recommending to new people feels harder. The game feels very fan servicy, giving people who played the mainline many moments to enjoy. There is a bit of reuse of old things from the mainline games, mostly a bit of the OST, but it is mixed in with Remixes and Original music also. There is just... something about it that doesn't make it feel as good as the mainline games and I can't quite think of what that is. Beating Legend kinda made me want to check out 4 again sometime soon and makes me hope that 5 isn't too many years away. Full price seems a bit much but probably more worth it on sale unless you want to support the Devs (which have made many enjoyable games)
This is a good and refreshing re-make of the Sunrider series, and as an old fan of the series I am very satisfied. To new players: it is recommended to play the previous Sunrider games (Mask of Arcadius, Liberation Day, Captain's Return), so as to get to know the main cast better. They were all by the way great games. Now to rate this new addition to the collection: 1. Narrative: good, somewhat more light-hearted than the previous games (
Kayto's cute sister now lives and is a member of the crew
). Generally on par with Sunrider 1 & 2, though perhaps not as satisfying as Captain's Return. An interesting observation is that the dialogue is, linguistically, somewhat more "old-fashioned" (like in say, Robinson Crusoe?) which fits the overall "Age of Sail" theme. 4/5 2. Gameplay: interesting mechanic that reuses the "vector-based" combat system from Captain's Return. The ability to capture ships is fun. The maritime battle system is such that if you make the correct tactical choices, you can basically eradicate the entire enemy fleet without taking much damage; the reverse is also true if you make mistakes. 4.5/5 3. Music: mostly re-used old music from the previous games. They were very good but new scores are really desired, now that the bg theme is "Age of Sail" instead of space opera. Something like the opening music of Assassin's Creed Black Flag would suffice nicely. 3.5/5 4. UI: not good (this has always been a weakness of the entire series). The default key bindings are just...bad. And keyboard controls cannot be used in boarding battles, which is lame. Changing the default key bindings is a must to play comfortably. There's a bunch of other bad stuff like the rank 1-3 special skills that can't be shown during battles, and the inability to bring up the menu in boarding operations. You get used to the UI in time though but improvements should be made. Also there are some minor bugs (non-game-breaking but a bit annoying) 2/5 5. Gameplay tutorial: very bad - a lot of the combat system mechanics are only explained once. Some kind of tutorial is missing from the game. I was about halfway through the game to know how to operate the boarding battle turns. 1/5 6. Artwork: quality is okay, with some juicy fanservice art. But the amount of art content feels insufficient for a VN of this calibre. 3.5/5 7. Voicing: very good. (But oddly I still liked the English voice from the previous games better. Maybe I'm being too greedy). 5/5 8. Waifus: let's face it - the kawaii
Asaga, Ava, Chigara, Icari, Kryska, Lynn, Maray and Sola (and others)
are the prime reason we continue to love the series.
And what's more they return as elfs, half-elfs and kemonomimi girls. Oh god.
Can't give a score on this, as waifus can't be rated qualitatively. Looking forward to the continuation of the series.
There are a few good things about this game, but for the most part, I prefer the Space Opera. Early Story Spoilers are hidden, but they aren't very far in. 1. The alternative fantasy outfits are all great! Can't find any to complain about. 2.
we can save Maray in this timeline, so yay! Little sister shenanigans!
The developers seem more happy to account for certain deviations from the "intended" storyline, and I am totally for it. 3. Boarding Mechanic is cool. I hope the next mainline Sunrider does this as well, because Stealing Captial Ships is rad as hell! 4. You CAN play this game on Controller. Button Setup 1 is Playstation Controller, Button Setup 2 is Xbox. I for one welcome the increased accessibility option, though it'd be even better if we also got the old Grid Movement system back with it, as movement requires very precise flicks (particularly for super-heavy ships like Ship-of-the-Lines) and double-checking of how much EN you have left after any movement. Notably however, Controller is bugged for a few interactions (namely when equipping multiple Special Attacks) and must be re-enabled every game start-up. All those aside, it just feels like a Derivative Fantasy Mask of Arcadia, more like the entire cast of Sunrider just decided to have a Virtual Tabletop Night but just changed some things around rather than try writing out a whole new adventure. The Negatives: 1. Boarding, while a nice addition in theory, makes Naval Combat completely unrewarding. You'll get double to quadruple the pay by selling a ship instead of sinking it, in addition to losing all loot on a ship if it's sunk by any means other than Boarding. It's also worth noting you get "Bakery Supplies" (potion materials) every time you successfully capture a ship. Ultimately this just makes firing at ships counter-intuitive because you'll almost never want to sink a ship (which is especially a PITA because Chain-Shot, the ability to shoot at a ship's mast and neutralize it's movement for easier Boarding, is an Equipment Item you cannot buy.) 2. You cannot organize your Fleet. I don't know why this is a thing, but your ships are ordered by Plot-Relevant ones, and then the order you captured them rather than Class. Maybe this is a Controller issue? 3. Get stuck on Reefs? Prepare to waste at least three actions trying to find a good angle out. 4. Maps are too damn large, and there's no minimap to know where everything is. I'm finding missions where I killed everything only for some enemy to have spawned in the far corner of the map and now I have to spend three turns getting over to kill them. 5. Not enough Generics to man the ships IMO. Would be better if you didn't need at least one person per boat and could just chain board, but I get why the limitations are there. 6. Recipes are not saved. Better pull out a .txt doc to write down every combination you find... 7. Reloading is prohibitively expensive for the player for some reason, even on the lowest difficulty. I'm finding enemy ships firing twice far more than my own, and would request that the cost for reloading be halved. There is a piece of equipment that lowers reload cost, but shops are few and have very limited selection. I thoroughly enjoy the Sunrider series, and have for years. I don't seem to vibe very much with the side-projects though (first Academy, then Star Nova, now Legends) but I love this franchise and it's cast way too much to stop hungrily devouring everything that Love in Space sets on the table. I will however, complain of indigestion if I think the food is undercooked.
I loved that the game maintained the solid story of previous Sunrider´s, but one thing they could improve is the optimization of ship battles due to the movement of water and other factors, which make them very laggy. I would suggest adding a graphics option in the battle options, adding something like still water or something like that. But the gameplay, story, and mechanics are just too good.
