Shovel Knight: King of Cards is a confident, inventive, and personality-driven chapter in the Shovel Knight universe that proves how flexible and enduring the series’ core design truly is. Developed and published by Yacht Club Games, this campaign reframes familiar mechanics through the lens of King Knight’s bombastic ego and flamboyant combat style, resulting in an experience that feels distinct rather than derivative. While it exists as part of the larger Treasure Trove collection, King of Cards stands comfortably on its own thanks to its focused structure, clever experimentation, and sharp comedic tone. The most immediate difference lies in how the game feels to play. King Knight’s signature shoulder bash defines the entire experience, functioning as both a primary attack and a traversal tool that allows him to ricochet through environments with dramatic momentum. This mechanic shifts the rhythm of platforming away from careful spacing and toward bold, aggressive movement, rewarding players who commit to chaining bounces and managing risk midair. Mastery comes from understanding angles, timing, and enemy placement, and once the movement clicks, stages flow with an energetic, almost acrobatic cadence that sets this campaign apart from earlier entries. Level design leans heavily into this identity by favoring compact, challenge-driven stages over long, endurance-based levels. Each area is densely packed with hazards, secrets, and optional routes, encouraging experimentation and repeat runs rather than slow, cautious progression. Because stages are shorter, failure feels less punishing and learning feels more immediate, making it easier to iterate on strategies and improve execution. Hidden exits and alternate paths reward curiosity and mechanical confidence, reinforcing the sense that skillful play is always being acknowledged. Combat variety is expanded through heirlooms, special items that provide situational abilities such as protective shields, ranged attacks, or movement-enhancing effects. These tools allow players to tailor their approach without undermining the importance of King Knight’s core kit. They add flexibility to encounters and offer creative solutions to tricky sections, but they never replace the need for precise movement and timing. Boss encounters, in particular, make excellent use of these systems, combining spectacle with demanding mechanical tests that feel fair, expressive, and memorable. Narratively, King of Cards embraces humor and self-awareness more openly than previous campaigns. The story centers on King Knight’s quest for recognition and status, framed through his participation in a grand card-based competition. His exaggerated arrogance and constant self-aggrandizement are played entirely straight, creating a steady stream of comedy through dialogue and situational irony. While the stakes are intentionally light, the writing is consistently sharp, using character interactions to add charm and momentum without bogging the game down in exposition. One of the campaign’s most notable additions is Joustus, a fully realized card game woven throughout the adventure. Far from a throwaway distraction, Joustus offers its own strategic depth, collectible system, and optional progression path. Matches require spatial awareness and forward planning, echoing the tactical thinking found in the platforming itself. While entirely optional, it provides a meaningful change of pace and demonstrates Yacht Club Games’ willingness to expand the series beyond its established comfort zone. Visually and aurally, King of Cards maintains the franchise’s high standard. The pixel art is vibrant and expressive, with detailed animations that convey personality even in small gestures. Environments reuse familiar themes while introducing enough variation and polish to keep them feeling fresh. The chiptune soundtrack once again delivers memorable melodies that enhance both high-energy action and quieter moments, reinforcing the sense that every element has been crafted with care and intent. In terms of difficulty, the campaign strikes a thoughtful balance. It demands precision and commitment, particularly when pushing for secrets or optional challenges, but it rarely feels unfair. The learning curve is shaped more by understanding King Knight’s movement physics than by punishing enemy design, ensuring that improvement feels earned rather than arbitrary. This makes the experience rewarding for both newcomers and series veterans looking to refine their skills. Ultimately, Shovel Knight: King of Cards succeeds by embracing its character and mechanics wholeheartedly. It doesn’t attempt to simply replicate what came before, instead carving out its own identity through bold movement, compact level design, and playful experimentation. As a closing chapter to the Shovel Knight saga, it feels celebratory and confident, offering a polished, inventive platforming experience that honors the series’ roots while proving it still has room to surprise. Rating: 8/10
shiny ✨
This is a great platformer, which cements the status of the Shovel Knight franchise as the undisputed best in the genre when it comes to a retro-NES style game. It's full of ideas, constantly introduces new mechanics (both in the levels, and via character upgrades) which are very intuitive and fun, and it's quite challenging but almost never frustrating (maybe the last part of the penultimate level a tiny bit - but it was the very end so that's fair). The music is pretty good and there are a couple of tracks which are superb even. The characters and the graphics in general are lovely. I hope the developers will be successful with the incoming Mina the Hollower which, judging from the demo I tried, should be another very well done game and I will certainly get at some point.

Got destroyed in the card game until my brain expanded and now I enjoy it more than the great platforming sections.
Cara e um jogo bastante lgl ele entrou facil no meu top 10!
King of Cards surprised me with how distinct it feels from the rest of the Shovel Knight lineup — King Knight's shoulder bash gives the platforming a bouncy, aggressive rhythm that takes a little getting used to but clicks in a deeply satisfying way once it does. The shorter, densely packed stages are a smart design choice that keeps the experience feeling fresh rather than exhausting, and I appreciated how the game rewards you for committing to chaining moves rather than playing cautiously. Joustus, the in-game card game, could have easily felt like a throwaway gimmick, but it's genuinely strategic and fun enough that I found myself seeking out matches rather than avoiding them. The writing leans fully into King Knight's pompous, self-absorbed personality for consistent laughs, though I'll admit his character doesn't have quite the emotional depth of Plague or Specter Knight's stories. Still, as a complete package — tight platforming, a surprising secondary game mode, great chiptune soundtrack, and a fair price — this is absolutely worth picking up, especially if you've enjoyed anything else in the Shovel Knight universe.
