About

Subway Builder is a hyperrealistic transit simulation game built using live data from US, UK, Irish, French, and Japanese cities.
Real-World Passenger Simulation
Millions of commuters are generated from Census and Redistricter data and simulated using the same pathfinding algorithms you use on your phone. Your job is to design a route network that gets the most people to their destination as fast as possible. Juggle station placement, transfer dynamics, and train frequency to maximize ridership.
In-Depth Analysis
Explore how individual commuters weigh tradeoffs between wait times, transfers, income distribution, delays, and more, to pick their commute. Understand which routes, stations, and trains your commuters take and use that information to optimize your network.
You must also find the right balance between cost and time using this analysis. Too many trains on a line or an overcrowded station may cause delays or disruptions.
Authentic Data
The US, UK, Ireland, France, and Japanese census records home and workplace locations. The game generates millions of commuters with homes from that and then uses a distance-based gravity model to assign them all workplaces. They're also assigned times to leave to/from work in a distribution similar to real life. Please note that a broadband connection is required to maintain the real data used by the game.
This decision is then made based on how long each commute method takes, how much it costs, and the value of their time (different commuters can have different incomes).
If they decide to take the subway you can follow their commute (and thousands of others simultaneously) as they get to work. If a train is delayed or cancelled, it will affect their commute and future commuters will take that into account.
College and airport commuters are also simulated and they behave differently since they have different income distributions and commuting times. Federal data is used for college student counts and FAA data for airports.
Current cities in Subway Builder include: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Houston, Indianapolis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St Louis, and Washington in the US. Birmingham, Liverpool, London, Manchester, and Newcastle in the UK. Paris, Marseille, Lyon, in France. Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Sendai, Hiroshima, and Nagoya in Japan, and Dublin in Ireland.

its a good game all in all, some small bugs and some stuff that are a little annoying such as there is only home and work and no leisure but it's still good
it's good but I had my routes vanish for no reason
The game is highly entertaining and surprisingly easy to get started with. One challenge, however, is the high investment costs, making it financially demanding to reach sparsely populated areas. Features like trams or buses would be valuable to improve connectivity to the subway system. At the moment, generating revenue in low-density cities takes a long time, and outer-city lines struggle to turn a profit. I’m excited for more cities to be added in the future. Even though the game is still in development, it’s incredibly fun and well worth trying.

I recommend it, here is why. I had been following this game for some time, and a while later i see it was released on steam. I was skeptical for a while, high price tag, mixed reviews, and a not great launch. Reading negative reviews, especially about always online requirements and bugs/performance issues discouraged me heavily. I decided to wait until the introductory sale was about to end to make a choice, because either I would get it before the sale ended, or i would leave it for a while, the sale was a huge factor in my decision because its a pretty big difference in a substantial price tag for the game. Eventually the 1.5.0 update rolled around near to the time the sale would end, and after reading that update, I realized it cured a big chunk of issues people were talking about. In order to confirm I looked on reddit and saw their enthusiasm about it, and reading the update made me realize that there was active effort from the development team, and that the game would improve over time. If there was no sale or if the $30 sale went on for longer, I would likely have waited a bit. But i decided to wing it and get it now, knowing the game would improve in the future. I would say it was worth it. Its a fun game. The tutorial did teach me something but I ended up just watching a youtube tutorial and that definitely helped. The gameplay loop is nice, and I think I made a good choice. Its fun how the game auto generates a map of your network for you, and the real time census data is very cool. A bit odd how sometimes people will just walk across a river to a nearby subway stop, but other than that, the game runs very smoothly and without bugs. So if you are on the fence about this game, just know that I was too, for a while. Heres my recommendation about this game from my experience depending on your situation: if you like subway systems then its pretty fun. Is it worth 40 dollars in its current state? depends, but I would in most cases say no. I believe unless you are super invested into stuff like this, wait for a sale. I didnt mind as much paying 30 bucks as opposed to 40. Alternatively you can get it on their website for 30, but in my mind the steam version is better, despite the fact they are the same game with same updates, steam just has more perks. Other than that I would say ignore all the reviews talking about the always online requirements, and ignore most of the reviews about bugs, a decent chunk have been solved. Its a lot more fun playing the game than it is thinking about playing the game if you get what I mean. Im sure it will improve in the future, so either you can invest in it now or wait for a sale, the game isnt going anywhere, but it is only up from here (i hope). Basically its a fun gameplay loop, 1.5.0 update improved some stuff, and its mildly expensive so waiting for a sale is recommended, but youd probably be fine buying it as is if you really like the idea. (sorry for yapping so much i have absolutely nothing else to do)
This game is good now I can make alternate plans for different cities

This game is actually really fun, and addictive in some ways. Being a transit fan, and city building style kind of guy, this is a game I would recommend to anyone like me. I’ve been wanting to play this since October when I saw YouTuber Drew Durnil playing it. And I was really interested in it. And now I’m playing the game 8 months later building a city in New York.

Has a lot of potential and the game based on real data is more like the classic city building era where people would import USGS data and similar to make a city that look real. You can really go deep especially if you lived in one of the metro areas featured. I can find building and landmarks based on the map alone but tags beyond town names would really help. Like other simulators in 2026 the internet is needed due to the amount and freshness of the data. Needs a lot more refinement and the arrow keys and mouse rotation need an invert option. Hopefully the next few patches resolve the issues and add more game like behavior since the game feels more like a malfunctioning piece of CAD software crudely fused with a census data sheet.
