Subverse

I was following Subverse from way back before it came out. I was excited about it, a high-quality game by studio FOW, who made high quality (albeit often too kinky for my tastes) videos. But I have some big complaints. This game IS kind of impressive, it's done a lot that most porn games don't which is actually build a... HALFway decent game onto the porn. But the problem is, a lot of other porn games are doing more with less. This game is long, grindy, and every part of it is mediocre because the effort is spread too thin. I don't care about the "funny" story, the "meh" gameplay, and worst of all, the sex scenes themselves, well they just don't hold up. They're all just fixed camera, looping animations (minus a few special ones). They're stiff, not very sexy, most of them aren't enthusiastic enough, and only a few let you even control the speed. Plus, there's smaller things like really shallow thrusting, dry privates, and a plasticky texture over his dong, or angles that don't let you see their crotch where the action's happening. The animations don't even come close to living up to the quality of FOW's other work (except for the 1 cinematic scene per character, but they still only come close, and are clunky to access, can't rewind) Also the interface for accessing the scenes is clunky. All put together, it's an interesting achievement, but every single facet of this game is something that you can find better somewhere else. If they'd put twice as much effort and quality control into the sex stuff and half as much effort into making a mediocre game around it, maybe it would be worth more than a novelty piece of sex-game history. In two years, it will be easily surpassed by other similar games that do things better.

Fellas, never buy a game that doesnt show the *actual* gameplay in its trailer. The sex animations are top tier, i have to give it to the dev, but thr gameplay is just not my style. A clearer trailer of the gameplay (what im going to be doing 90% of the time) would have helped a lot more. Disappointing.

The female cast is pretty good and the sex is nice and all, but the gameplay is uninspired and feels detached from the whole NSFW angle they were going for. In the end it kinda just becomes an incredibly mid-tier grind for a pretty okay sex scenes. The only other thing about this game that supposedly makes it stand out is its budget that allowed for a fully fledged story and voice acting from recognizable NSFW voice talent. The problem is that the story is a slog of unfunny religion bashing and 'the joke is porn'. Like, I get it's a porn game, but all you got from $2,000,000 in crowd funding was two shticks and neither of them are funny. And you want me to spend another $40 on this? I get Christian porn addicts like me are functionally hypocrites but unless you're a reddit atheist or laugh really easily at anything sex related I recommend just making a stop at Rule34 or watching a Family Guy funny moments compilation; those are free, better quality, and waste a lot less time.

Subverse is all over the place. The first gameplay mode you are introduced to is a spaceship shoot-em-up, and it’s actually pretty fun to play. However, the game then turns into a visual novel—and that is what you’ll be doing for the vast majority of the time: dialogues and cutscenes. The game tries to tell a story, but a big chunk of the writing consists of cringe-worthy jokes and constant fourth-wall breaking. Also, the protagonist is essentially a mix of Star-Lord and Deadpool wearing someone's panties as a mask. After that, you get the turn-based tactical combat. It’s serviceable, but definitely on the boring side. Then there is the adult content, which isn't meaningfully tied to the other mechanics; you just collect a specific currency to unlock scenes. All in all, it’s a mess. It is a really weird mix of genres, and it’s hard to tell what audience the developers had in mind.

Paid DLC already which is not free for Kickstarter backers who paid considerable money for the Studio 69 DLC which they have gone completely silent on. I think after all these years I'm entitled to have lost patience with this company and they deserve to be put in the same league as scammers. If you must play this game, pirate it. They don't deserve a cent of your money.
