I dunno what some of these negative reviews are talking about with there being a disconnect between gameplay and adult scenarios. You are in a ship, trying to take down an empire. There is ship shooter gameplay (makes perfect sense cuz your in a ship, in space, so shooting other ships in space lines up) and there is a grid based tactical combat game mode for planet side gameplay sorta like xcom. Overall, the game has a decent amount of content and story for what you are spending your money on. So, why the negative review? Well, it's pretty straight forward. StudioFow set out to make a AAA Adult Game. The game was originally progressing very well. There was a sense of achievement in the gameplay, and as a reward when you got back to your ship you got to "spend time" with your crew mates, in quality scenes. Each planet had a Star rating system, that rated how well you did out of 3 stars. The combat was engaging, and difficult at times. Getting 3 stars felt like an achievement. It felt good to get 3 stars on every planet/point of interest in a star system. The tactical combat felt great! There was a need to use ultimates, there was a need to heal, and keep your distance at times. The enemy seemed clever in the way they attacked. It kept you on your toes. It was a game, and the gameplay was fantastic! Then, they lost a good developer or two, and a select few individuals(negligible amount) started to complain on the steam forums that the game was too hard, and people were having to spend too much time, actually playing the game, instead of being able to get off.. So, StudioFow took this oppertunity to lower their work load, and make the game a braindead shootem up, with no tactical necessity, no sense of achievement after completeing a zone. Removed the Star Rating systems. Simplified the ship shooting combat making it much easier, over simplified the tactical combat mode to the point were the enemeies don't even stay alive long enough for you to even use your ultimate. On top of that, there was an entire system, and the story even began to introduce it, DEVA mode. Basically where your waifu goes super saiyan. It was epic. But then they scraped it entirely, and left it part of the story, just cuz. Now, you will notice a greyed out Wings a the bottom left of your screen that does absolutely nothing, and the "unlock" for it is at level 20 for every waifu, but does absolutely nothing now, and this is primarily because 1 they were too lazy, and 2 because the gameplay had become braindead, and you would beat tactical combat far before you'd ever need to utilize DEVA state, it further allowed the Devs to be a lazy POS and drop 80% of the actual Gameplay in their so called AAA game. If you rolled back the game to an earlier point, around just when taron just came out, the game is f*n amazing. After that, it was just one dropped ball after another. Until we have an conflicting game. A mostly top-notch story (for an adult game anyway) mixed with a souless gameplay loop, that makes you feel like you are waisting your time just to grind out devotion levels for scenes, when before it felt good to actually play the game, and you got great eye candy for doing so. So this is a negative review, as the Devs were negative to their backers by removing content, gameplay, systems, promised aspects, the entire soul of the game, and many many other things that would have actually made this a AAA game. Instead, it's just a half-a**ed attempt that makes other companies like Ubi and EA seem amazing (which is seriously saying something, cuz those companies are the scum of the earth.) And to tie it alllllllll together, the MAIN, PRIMARY REASON at LEAST half of us played to the end, was to get Celestina in our crew, and get our eye candy. You know how they rewarded us? A paid DLC for that content, with a half a**ed 5 min story content, and then the "scenes" in pandora we should have gotten with the base game. StudioFow, has completely lost my interest and support. They ever make another game, they can rot in bankruptcy.
The thing that turns people on is not so much what's happening, but what's happening in their heads, what they fantasize about. Now, if you put all the NSFW content in a scene player, and make it the only way to access them, it's literally no different from going to a porn site and just look something up real quick. It's the immersion that makes people attached. And, this game completely fails to do that. Even though the scenes in this game are well animated, voice acting is top tier, and the characters are hot, the scenes are SO DETACHED from the story that it completely undermines the value you would get out of a video game instead of a porn video. The thing that makes a video game different (and better) from a movie or a video is that the player can immerse themselves in the environment and be part of the story. But if everything is in a scene player, there's literally no different, and your resources are completely wasted. What would make this game better? - Make the sex scenes interactive: Allow the player to interact/touch/stimulate the characters. A lot sex games do this. It's a simple technique but works every time. Why? Because people don't necessarily look for sex. They look for the feeling of control through sex. So, if they can say "well, if I touch Killian in this specific way, she would react better than Fortune, which would react positively to something else", that is literally hot AF and people would get addicted to that stimulation. This game is completely detached from this. - Allow sex scenes to be triggered randomly at various places instead of just the scene player on the Mary Celeste: I mean, c'mon, you have the whole universe around to explore, and the only place you can have sex is on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ship? That's boring as hell. Just have different sex scenes with different species, different scenarios, etc... triggerable in different settings, different planet. The scene player is fine. But the thought that really turns people on is "If I go here and do this specific thing, I can ♥♥♥♥ Ela", something like that. Again, it's the illusion of control that turns people on, not necessarily the sex itself. - Make sex scenes rewards of specific actions instead of just "collect points to unlock": Similar to the point above, have something like: If I complete this specific side quest on this specific planet, I get to have sex right then and there on that planet. Then, when I get back to explore that planet, I might be able to trigger the same thing again. Again, action --> reward. That's how you get people addicted. BTW, this would make the gameplay much more engaging than what it currently is, AND people have a lot more motivation to do the side quest, because that's how they get the thing they look for: the illusion of control, via fantasized sex. All these are meant to make the game more interactive and distinct from just watching a porn video. But, for now, I'd say this game is definitely a waste of time and potential. Especially, now that everyone's played it and uploaded every single scene onto PH, there's literally no point buying this game. BTW, the gameplay is insanely boring and repetitive. So, I can't recommend wasting money on this like I did. I had a fair time jerking off to it. But then I can just go to PH to rewatch literally all the scenes without having to boot up the game. There's literally no replay value worth paying for. Anything you can do with this game you can look for on PH, if that's what you're looking for.
Where's the Russian language version promised on Kickstarter?! I bought the game in 2021, right after it entered Early Access. I wanted to support independent developers who defied the trends of the time and created truly beautiful and sexy female characters, ignoring the agenda. Version 1.2.0 has already been released, along with DLC (which veterans might have added, but that's just my own greedy desires), and there's still no official Russian localization (although a fan-made, very high-quality one is ready). I'm disliking it only because of the unfulfilled promises. Don't be like those big, greedy companies that split a game into multiple parts and then sell each one separately for the price of the full game.
It’s almost impossible to believe a game with such high production values is as bad as this is…or I should say unsexy. Multiple sexy games with farrrrrrrrr smaller budgets and productions values are ludicrously better than this game. I would wager the bulk of sex games are better then this. I heavily question whether these developers have ever played a sex game before, or a visual novel game, or even have had sex before. This is literally the least erotic sex game ever made. First, this game is an obvious parody on Mass Effect. I have no problem with parodying literally the best scifi story ever told in videogames…but even a parody should be fun. I find it laughable that they are parodying a game that gives so much player choice and agency and this game has none…literally none. This is a straight linear story. It is a kinetic visual novel. You make no choices at all. You literally can’t even decide what female characters on your crew you have sex with. You have sex with all of them as part of the story. It shows a complete lack of understanding of the entire erotic visual novel genre and it’s laughable that a game based on Mass Effect would have no player choices. Did it even occur to the developers that I wouldn’t want to have sex with all of these characters…that maybe I would actively dislike or be creeped out by some of these characters (Sova). Apparently not. At the very least any erotic visual novel should give the player the ability to decide what characters to have sex with, even if the game has no other choices. To not even let the character affect the story though…where the hell did all your money go? Voice acting? Congrats, your voice actors are really good…you know what I don’t need…to watch a linear porn video with no player agency. Do you know how much free porn exists on the internet…do you? The benefit of erotic visual novels is literally the fact players have agency and can construct a story with meaningful choices. Second, if you are going to tell a humorous story…it better be funny. The jokes in this game are terrible. The characters are awful. They are all cringe. They break the 4th wall constantly, but it’s not funny. The humor is normally gross or degrading. It feels like what a teenager would make if they made a sex game. It reminds me of the early 2000’s sex cartoon “Tripping the Rift.” That was also terrible. It feels so similar that I have to assume the developers thought that show was a masterpiece. The fact that every character in this game is overly sexual…i…guess…is fine…but literally these characters have almost no personalities other than their desire to ♥♥♥♥. I’m not sure if any scene exists in the game without a character actively attempting to engage in sex with another character or at least talking about having sex with another character. It’s literally exhausting. This is a 30 hour game where it’s nonstop boring sexual jokes and humor. Their was a scifi show called Lexx years ago…sure had a lot of sex on that show, but the characters actually had desires other than sex and the humor was drastically better written then this game. Third, the sex in this game is bad…really bad. Even if it was great I don’t think I could forgive the lack of player choice and agency…but my god…this is the most boring vanilla sex I’ve ever seen. Sure the production values are great. There are a lot of boring sex scenes for you to watch with all the characters. The developers have no understanding of eroticism or erotic art. The writing in the game is not erotic, it’s boring and dull. Writing and dialogue in a sex game need to also be erotic to help convey the tone of a scene. This writing feels like reading a textbook on sex, it is the least sexual of any writing or dialogue in any medium. Everyone of these sex scenes is the submissive female character getting railed…just over and over again. I’m not even sure I would describe it as maledom. These female characters are all submissive, but I wouldn’t call it bdsm sex. These characters all just engage in vanilla sex. You have a game with multiple female characters and yet everyone has the same sexual preference of being submissive and being just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over and over again with the biggest ♥♥♥♥ possible…for 30 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hours. There are no strong female femdom characters that might have a female dominant relationship with the main character. The two characters that pretend they are (Kili and Blythe), only engage in submissive vanilla sex with the main character. Again though, their aren’t even submissive female characters that the main character can dominate. So hope you like vanilla sex. The Best erotic visual novels will have multiple different options for sexual partners where each one has their own specific kinks and then on top of that choices that affect the direction of the story. This game they all have the same kink…to have sex with a big ♥♥♥♥ and that is it. It’s boring and pointless…again the internet exists…there is tons of free porn out there. Why would anyone buy this game? It is hilariously telling that the main character for the whole game wears a mask and hence can not engage in any oral sex with any female character in this game. You literally made a sex game where the only interactive sex the male lead can have with a female character and the only way he can pleasure them is to ♥♥♥♥ them with his ♥♥♥♥…that basically tells me everything I need to know about the developers who made this game and who this game is made for. No one should buy this game. It’s a waste of time and money. If you want a good overall erotic visual novel go play Seeds of Chaos. An erotic visual novel that actually has drastic player decisions and allows you to affect the entire direction of the story on top of who you have sex with and where you decide what the main characters kinks are. If you want a femdom one then try Queendom of Lithzena, again a sex game with actual player choices. The Survival of Sarah Rose a maledom focused sex game with a submissive female main character, again an excellent visual novel with extreme amounts of player choice. For a more humorous erotic sex game try Wet Sands, it’s pirate themed! It has less player choice when it comes to affecting the story as opposed to Seeds of Chaos, Survival of Sarah Rose, or Queendom, but at the very least it lets you decide who to romance! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BORING VANILLA KINETIC VISUAL NOVEL (I did enjoy the space combat and ground combat, so goodjob whoever designed the only enjoyable part of the game and the great voice actors who all did a great job).
You cannot keep using crowdfunding promises to deceive players. It has been five years, and every promised localization update has been repeatedly delayed with excuses. We still have no idea about the actual progress or how long we are supposed to wait. This is dishonest behavior toward the player base.
Introduction
So, it took me a bit to finally play this adult sci-fi adventure game. I must have had it on my wishlist for a few years by now, but decided to get it during autumn sale since the price didn’t seem to come any lower than the 15 bucks I paid. At first, I thought about comparing this game to the likes of Huniepop, but after playing through this, I realized that this game is in its entirely own league! I haven’t had this much fun in a game like this in a while and I initially set out to 100% this game and I almost did, if it wasn’t because my backlog of games is growing faster than I can keep up with. I did clear half of the entire galaxy though, leveled every single crew member to level 40, did every devotion quest, unlocked every Pandora scene and spent a decent amount of time in the Eldritch Trials, at least enough to form an opinion on them. So, let’s get to it.
Story
I liked the overall story they wrote for this game. It fits really well with the structure and theme of the universe they created. You play as this criminal, sarcastic and very confident anti-hero, a bit like a Deadpool kind of character. He is the main protagonist and is the captain of a stolen ship called the Mary Celeste. The overall plot of the story is that he forms a crew of rebels to take on the Imperium and restore personal will and freedom in the universe. Saying more will end up spoiling things, so I’ll leave it at that.
Gameplay and Combat
The gameplay is where this game is having some issues. I have seen a lot of people talk about this as the reason they didn’t like the game, and while I agree with some of it, I also don’t think it is that bad and I enjoyed it for the most part. There are two types of combat in this game. A top down shoot em up space combat mode, where you fly around shooting waves of enemies and choose a crewmate as a co-pilot for her special ability. And then a turn based ground combat mode where you choose a crewmate and three alien beasts from a given selection to fight on foot. The ones of you who read my other reviews know that I’m not normally a big fan of turn based combat, but this is one of the exceptions where turn based combat definitely was the best choice. Enemies come in all varieties, there are 4 or 5 different enemy factions I think, all playing really differently, some way harder than others. There are also a decent number of boss fights, which by far are the hardest fights in the game. Not much strategy is really needed at any time, I don’t know if that is a bad thing though. There are maybe a few challenging missions, but they are very doable after a few restarts, and even if they aren’t, you can just activate victory protocol after three deaths and cheat win the missions.
Quests
There are multiple types of quests and objectives in this game. The first are obviously the main quests, which hold the main campaign and story mode within them. There are a handful of main quests which are each around 40 minutes, assuming you don’t just skip everything. Side quests in this game are kind of useless. Most of them include a very short attached story that just consists of a short dialogue and some mission briefing text and there are no scenes in the side quests, which makes the really boring. There are also what I call miscellaneous quests, they are just all the leftover planets in the galaxies once you did everything else. We also have two other types of quests. The first is devotion quests, which are personalized quests for each crew member, excluding Fow-Chan. They are shorter but essentially much higher quality quests than the main quests and each one includes a long spicy scene that is like a full blown movie. The devotion quest scenes serves as like the grand finale to the game. The last is the Eldritch Trials, which become available in engineering once Fow-Chan has been unlocked at the very end of the main campaign. They are endless waves of either ground or space combat scenarios. They don’t seem to scale in difficulty the further you get up, so it is more like an endurance test than a skill thing. These trials are however a really fast way to level up your crewmates. I do have two complaints when it comes to mission design. The first is that side missions would have benefitted a lot from including special scenes, at least if just some of them had had hidden scenes or something like that. At least there would have been more of an incentive to go do them all. I think it would have been better to take all those Pandora scenes and scatter them across all the side missions instead of just making them unlockable with points. Having them assigned to missions would also help add a story to them. The other thing is that when it comes to the missions where I can select a character to do the job for me, like the Demi part upgrade missions, why am I given the option to pick a crewmate if there is only one correct crewmate choice for each mission? It gets really annoying shuffling through each one of them everytime until you find the correct one. And when by accident picking the wrong crew member, why can’t I go back and pick the correct one?
Characters (minor spoilers!)
The characters are really well crafted in this game, especially considering what this game is. You’ve got multiple different characters of different species with different personalities and visual features, all coming together really well. When it comes to crewmates, there is a total of 10 that can be unlocked in the game. Demi, Lily, Killi, Ela, Taron, Sova, Fortune, Huntress, Blythe and Fow-Chan. I still can’t believe that Empress Celestina isn’t the last crewmate and gets to keep her purity. Every character in this game is fully voiced and the voice actors did a good job. It all sounds professional and high quality. The voice acting is actually the thing that brings this game to the top level. It is kind of crazy how much it adds to the immersion and quality of the game.
Pandora
The Pandora is essentially the gallery. All the scenes from the main campaign will be playable here. There is however also a large amount of none mission scenes that can be unlocked here using “pooter points.” Each crewmate has her own points and they are earned through her leveling. You should be able to unlock all of the “pooter point scenes” with a girl once you hit around level 30 with her.
Outfits and Hairstyles
There is a wardrobe in this game, with unlockable haircuts and outfits you gain through leveling each girl. While this is a cool addition, the changes you make are pretty useless, since pretty much all of the clothing options are unlocked at the very end of the game, when your crewmates are near or at max level, long after you finished the main campaign.
Pricing
I honestly think the price is fine and I find this game slightly underrated. It is a big game in a genre of games that never sees projects of this size and it seems to have been made by a proper studio. There also are no microtransactions, which is a huge win for this game. Most games in this genre and style are riddled with paywalls in all types of progression and rewards. In the 30 hours I played I had one crash and there was an autosave that saved me, not bad at all.
Conclusion
I did not know anything about this game before hand, so it blew me away how big it actually is and how many scenes of all different kinds were made for this game. It took me 30 hours to complete pretty much everything the game had to offer and I paid 15 bucks for it. To me that is a good deal, especially for a game of this quality. The ending of the game is setting it up for a sequel to be possible, but I don’t know if we ever will get one. If we do though, I will definitely buy it! _________________________________ Help me out by following my Curator, I’d really appreciate it!!
Game doesn't let you load previous saves. I tried to skip some texts and skip like 30 minutes of dialogue and a cutscene and it autosaved right after that. Autosaves with no manual loading and visual novel story telling do not belong together.
