Can't even get past the start menu without the game crashing with a "Fatal Error".
I don't know if I've ever played another game with this much Scottish cursing and swearing in it. 10/10
I cannot recommend this game in good faith at its current price.
At its current price point of $35, there is simply not enough content wise for me to consider it worth paying for; this game should be like $15-$20 for what you get, or more aptly what you *dont* get
The Characters
I liked the characters in this game; They are charming and each have their own different personalities and I enjoyed the little chats you have with them. Unfortunately, I can only say this about the 1-2 characters that you actually spend enough time around to build any sort of the relationship with. This game is 4 HOURS LONG, and like 75% of the characters you meet will die way before you have any time to actually care about them in any meaningful way. Roy is the only character who actually gets fleshed out at all, and that's because you are constantly talking with him and meeting up with him throughout the game. This could've been the case with the other characters, but there is no opportunity for it because the game is so short, so you end up with like 6 random guys that Caz will address by name who you saw a single time 2 hours ago, and you're left sitting there thinking "Oh i guess Guy With Blue Shirt is dude..."
The Enemies
For a "Lovecraftian" themed game, the base game really does not have much going on in terms of variety for the monsters. Of the 4 unique enemies in the game, 3 of them have almost the exact same design, and their encounters all play out exactly the same: Big mass of flesh with long legs where you avoid them by walking 5 feet to a new hiding spot and MAYBE throwing an object to distract them if you're struggling. The chase sequences are no better. If you thought this would be like Outlast chase sequences where you need to backtrack to a hiding spot or quickly find a way to get out of your pursuer's line of sight you are sorely mistaken. Almost every single chase is just running in a straight line and maybe opening a door at the end, which is really disappointing but I understand why they'd keep these to a minimum because the running animation looks so goofy.
The "Puzzles"
The most egregious part of this game is the puzzles, if you can even call them that. Every single puzzle in this game can be dumbed down to "There is an obstacle in front of you, and the key is 2 feet away". And to make matters worse, there is SO MUCH YELLOW PAINT EVERYWHERE oh my god the yellow paint usage is insane. Even on the Reduced setting (because there's no option to completely turn it off) every interactable surface is highlighted in yellow. There is no attempt to get the player to think about how to traverse forward, just a big arrow telling you exactly what to do. And you would think "oh maybe the devs just don't want players to waste their time" but then they add random locks and doors that require mini quick time events to open which add nothing but extra playtime to an already short game. I swear to god the devs put these in here just to ensure you couldn't beat the game under 2 hours and refund it because they genuinely do nothing but waste time. Another thing about these 'interactable moments' is that mechanics get brought up and then rarely if ever used again. In the beginning of the game you are shown that to open the watertight doors you must hold m1 and then press S to turn the door handle. This holds up for about half the game and then suddenly you can just open them like any other door by clicking them?? Another thing that gets brought up is how the locked metal doors on the outside of the rig can be easily opened by kicking them, which you are then immediately shown is very possible by kicking one open. This is NEVER brought up again and Caz will continue to say how a door is completely impenetrable because it is locked or 'stuck shut', despite it being clearly shown that you can easily open them with any ounce of force. This leads me to believe the devs genuinely just couldn't think of a way for the player to get out of the specific area where this interaction occurs naturally and just decided to invent something for that section alone.
Conclusion
All in all, I do not hate this game. I think the voice acting is very good and the story and characters could definitely be very compelling if they had more time to develop. However, for $35 it is simply not worth paying for at full price. If you want a good horror game that actually feels like a game and not a walking simulator, buy the Silent Hill 2 remake. For about double the price you get quadruple the play time of this game, actual character development, real puzzles, and no fake things added to pad playtime.
Couldn't even get to the main menu without it crashing on me. Story is probably great and the horrors might be scary af, but for some reason I can't run the game.
