Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is one of those games I’ve pretty much only heard good things about. Recently I decided to give it a try, starting with it’s generous demo, which took me 8 hours to complete. I finished that and felt sort of mixed on the game, but since the game is so highly rated and I wasn’t hating it, I decided to purchase the game and play it some more. I’ve now put in another 35 hours and I’m still feeling quite indifferent on it. It’s a perfectly fine game. It doesn’t really do anything particularly memorable or interesting. Nothing stands out as great, and other than some cringe inducing sexism and some slightly annoying music, nothing stands out as bad. I’ve never played a Dragon Quest before, so I didn’t really know what to expect outside of turn based combat. I’m usually not huge on turn based combat, but there have been a few turn based games that I thought were fantastic. This is not one of them. The combat is really easy to the point it often just feels tedious. However, I did find many of the monsters to be visually interesting. The story does have some “twists”, but they are always telegraphed way in advance, so when they are revealed, you’ve already known about them for hours and they never feel like twists. The companions do feel varied, but none stand out as particularly interesting. Structurally, this is not an open world game, which I appreciated. It does have open areas, but it’s still very much linear. There are a few times where you can choose where to go, but it always feels like there’s a correct order. If you choose wrong, you’ll just need to go to the correct one, do some stuff there, and then go back to the other area. Similarity, the game’s story is quite linear. It’s mostly told through dialog without any choice. You do occasionally get a dialog choice, but there’s always a clear correct answer. A few times I tried selecting the obviously wrong one just to see what happens and it basically forces you into the correct answer. There’s nothing super wrong with this, but it always makes me wonder why they bothered to give a choice. Overall, I don’t feel like I have a lot to say about Dragon Quest XIS because I don’t feel like it’s a game that has a lot worth talking about and after over 40 hours of it, I certainly do not get the hype. It’s a fine game, and since I’ve already paid for it and started it, I may eventual go back and finish it, but I don’t really feel like I should recommend you go out and spend your money and time on a game that is just fine when there are so many masterpieces out there.
This is like the Chinese buffet of games. Endless amounts of just fine to kinda good content to stuff your face with.
A fabulous, lengthy, comfy JRPG with fun characters and a good story (after the first act). JRPG comfort food. Can't go wrong.
I can't stomach this one anymore - I've been trying to beat this game ever since it came out. The story writing goes from really great main story beats to complete intern-level drivel. I got whiplash going from story beat to story beat. Once I realized that it wasn't going to change no matter how many hours I sunk into it waiting for it to 'get better', I decided to move on. I watched the million cutscenes on YT and....except for the final 2 mins of the true ending, I honestly didn't miss much. I wont spoil anything, but the story mechanic of Act 2 and 3 is so lame, and how act 3 impacts act 2, sigh. Other quick thoughts - the music is fine but forgettable (they reuse so many songs, it honestly feels like there are 12 songs in the game), the combat is what we have come to expect from DQ after 8. I wish they would have put in a FF button or something or allow text to be sped up - it just drags from a time perspective. I also have to mention how much Dragon Ball is ripped off throughout this game. I cant recommend this game, everyone's backlog is massive at this point, go play something else.
I don't think this game is bad. I may come back and complete it some day. I ABSOLUTELY recommend it to anyone looking for a lighthearted experience. That is actually why I am NOT recommending the game because it isn't to my taste. I just like darker and more serious games. None of the characters here are that interesting to me because the game is kind of childish. I don't think there's anything wrong with that but if anyone is like me they should know it doesn't get mature in any way. This is a classic hero's journey that's cartoony and silly. I love cartoony and silly, too, but make it edgy lol So in the end here's the verdict: game too happy waaah I no like lol 7/10 (but it's probably a 10/10 if you like happy stuff!)
making the attractive female character the main character's step-sister is highly questionable and, depending on where you live, possibly borderline illegal game design. i mean...cmon just look at it this way - the game introduces an attractive girl nice the game says she is your step-sister windows xp error.wav less nice who approved this questline who wrote this who signed off on this who looked at the previous guy and said "excellent work" everything was going great then the writers remembered they had free will i wish they hadnt ive seen this trope in a handful of other japanese games like uhhhh is everything all right over there or what like bro, someone need to give japan a snickers bar and a bottle of mountain dew baja blast, and tell japan to sit down and chill out cause like, bruh i aint trying to clap the cheeks of my stepsister bro, whats being suggested isnt morally correct by any modern standards whatsoever lil bro. if you think im over exaggerating just do yourself a favor and look at the community hub, then have regret afterwards
classic DQ series greatness -- playing with a smile on my face
