Steel Empire

This game is a port of the 3DS remake of Steel Empire. It is a no-frills port without any extra settings to customize it for the PC beyond what was presented in the original 3DS version. It is not a remaster or "HD remake" and is exactly the same game as Steel Empire on the 3DS. It has a number of issues on modern systems despite coming out in 2018: 1. The game is capped at 30 FPS and struggles to reach that. It drops frames frequently to compensate. While this doesn't slow down the game play or affect playability, dropped frames make it harder to react and track enemy bullets during fast action sequences. 2. The audio mixing is very strange, the player shot effects are extremely loud and the remaining effects and music are not as loud. When there's more effects playing the overall volume of the mixed audio gets lower. You can lower the effects balance in the option menu but it still sounds odd. 3. If your PC has a DPI setting that isn't 100% the game window is scaled larger than your screen. You have to use the compatibility settings on the game executable to force 100% DPI to make the game work. 4. Nearly all graphics have blurry edges which is a shame for a game with such excellent pixel art. Furthermore many elements have a 1 pixel gray border around everything. This is some kind of artefact from how the objects are composited is not how the original game looked. It's definitely a bug. Overall the game feels like something that was handed off to a very inexperienced team to manage the PC port. Steel Empire is a great game and really embodies the best elements of shoot-em-ups before that genre became "bullet hell" games and the original style ceased to exist. That said, it's hard to recommend this port. If you can, play it on the 3DS or even the original game on the Genesis. I got this game on sale for $1.49 and that felt like a rip-off given all the performance, audio, and video issues. It is absolutely not worth the non-sale price of $14.99.

It's not bad or anything, but it's just kinda "meh". The sound and visuals are not great either. Still, it's not horrible. Just not recommended.

If you don't mind one of the Steam achievements being almost unobtain-ium than go for it. Keep in mind this is an old Sega game and overlook some obvious flaws: 1) Lots of Orange/Yellow Enemy Bullets clashing with the Player's Orange/Yellow Bullets 2) The game may crash from time to time , Don't try to Save Replays. It will crash the game 3) Button Inputs are broken in menus. 4) The Final Boss takes freaking forever to kill . It is a 15-20minute slog thru like 15 phases. It's not overly hard even in Hard Mode, but it gets sooooo old so fast bc you have to dodge the same mundane pattern for about 2-3mins due to the amount of health the boss has and environmental walls blocking your shot. 5) In-Game Achievements. There is an achievement for not dropping bombs. You may notice that no matter your button configuration, you will drop bombs when you shoot with a controller. To get around this.... -------- As far as the bombs, you must be holding down the Fire Forward Button before the start of the whole level, and then never take your fingers off the forward fire button. If you do take your finger off, then press shoot again, it will fire a bomb. You can still press down on rear shot to shoot backwards while holding forward shot. On Level 6, you go into a tunnel midway thru the level. You need to hold the fire backwards button at the start of this level or you will drop a bomb. -------- On the plus side, I do find the old school artwork enjoyable. It is relatively relaxed compared to a lot of flashy bullet hells we see these days. It was a dollar and a half on sale so it's an easy recommend if you want a laid back 90s shmup with a steampunk theme.

Old Genesis classic plays great on the Deck

Древнее гомно мамонта с консоли Mega Drive. Это не ремейк, а порт порта, соответственная этому и графика в маленьком окошке, а на полный экран просто растянутые пиксели. В трейлере даже покрасивее выглядит чем на деле, ярче что ли, сама игра блеклая и в коричневых тонах. Музыка ужасная, не смог долго выдержать и вырубил после первого уровня. Звуки тоже не ахти какие и в двух уровнях с противным скрежетом. Необычное и редкое управление для игр - здесь стрелочками кидаешь бомбы и стреляешь, а не управляешь самолётом как можно было бы подумать, но на самом деле удобное. Достижения выдаются в конце игры на титрах, что странно, поэтому изначально можно решить что они глючные. Играть не интересно, есть и лучше скролл-шутеры, положительные отзывы ставили ностальгирующие скуфы кто играл в оригинал.

I played this game to death back on my Sega Genesis back in the 90s, so I was happy to find out there was a remake to it; in fact, I was surprised that there was a remake in the first place. It's fun, brings back fond memories of when I use to play it back in the day. The graphics are decent, nothing to write home about but it's a nice upgrade from the original. The arranged music is a bit hit or miss with me, maybe because I'm biased to the original soundtrack. I wish they gave the option to switch between the two. Some of the text in the game seems kinda off, like some spots weren't translated well. Other than that, it's a decent remake. I'd get it on sale if you're not a diehard shump fan, or don't have a history with the original game like I do. Also, works great on Steam Deck!

Très bon remake du jeu originellement sorti sur Sega Megadrive, tout en étant proche du jeu original dans son essence, la DA refaite avec entres autres une nouvelle palette de couleurs, lui donnent cet aspect pastel arcade proche de titres du CPS1 de Capcom, et me rappellent donc Un Squadron et Carrier Airwing. Bonne difficulté, pas trop frustrant, une fois fini le mode normal, le mode difficile est directement débloqué et là le challenge prend tout son sens. Attendez les soldes et prenez le, c'est un bon titre qui renvoie aux début des années 90, et a cette authentique saveur nostalgique, sa difficulté relativement accessible en mode normal ne le rend pas frustrant et agréable à jouer.

A great port of the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis classic! (the option to use a Dualshock 4 is great too!)
