Steel Empire is apparently the remaster of a port of a port of an old Sega Genesis side-scrolling shoot 'em up from 1992. This one has technical issues. No video options to change your resolution and it's likely to be too zoomed in due to scaling problems. Easy to fix by checking this guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1539216219 But we shouldn't have to. I appreciated the steampunk setting and flying as a zeppelin (another more standard choide too), but too many enemy ships looked like toys for my taste. Nice parallax scrolling in the levels sometimes. The story interludes were boring and bland to look at. Lack of characters hurt it there. You could shoot backwards at any time which proved necessary and interesting. There was a lack of upgrades to keep things interesting. I managed to finish the campaign at easy and normal. Way too expensive at regular price but it has been 90% off.
My impressions of the superior Switch version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZC0620xPMc This is a cool remake of an often overlooked Genesis/Mega Drive shmup, but the port is absolute crap and if you want to play this, I recommend getting the Switch version and if you don't have a Switch, play this at your own risk. Compared to many shmups of the day, this has some unique mechanics and ideas that make it stand out. You have two fairly different ships to choose from and while you only have a single weapon and a bomb, the weapon can be upgraded and combat has a twist by allowing you to easily fire in both direction, which you'll have to do to crowd control. The levels are also varied and you'll see and experience a number of different environments and some truly impressive enemy designs, particularly among the bosses. It's not a hard game on the default difficulties, but higher options are available. The problem is that as a port, this version is plain bad. It runs at a low resolution that you cannot change (there are no video options whatsoever) and despite not saying it requires a controller, it appears to as it didn't respond to any keyboard and mouse inputs for me. Worst of all, the controls are broken so that when you change directions, you'll frequently fire off a bomb, despite not pressing the button for it, at least on an Xbox Series controller. You can remap the controls, but only between several preset configurations, none of which overcome this problem. This fundamentally breaks the game play and the scoring system as you get significant bonuses based on how many unused bombs you have at the end of a level. You may be able to hack your way around this, but you shouldn't have to. Since patch support for this has been dropped by the devs, this will likely never get fixed. This is a great shmup, but if you want to play it, skip this version and play the Switch one, which is much better. If you don't have a Switch, than either emulate the original Genesis version or if you must, buy this, but be prepared to refund it like I will be doing shortly.
Really dreadful port of a solid game. Loved the game back on the Mega Drive, and thought the remake was brilliant on the 3DS. But this is terrible. Its not optimized for high-DPI monitors or frankly controllers, with half the buttons screwed up. There are no graphical options, and your choices are limited. Its not worth the sale price of almost £4, and definitely not worth the full retail price. Avoid this one like the plague, until the devs can be bothered to fix it (and given how long its been in this state, don't hold your breath).

▬▬▬.◙.▬▬▬ ═▂▄▄▓▄▄▂ ◢◤ █▀▀████▄▄▄▄◢◤ █▄ █ █▄ ███▀▀▀▀▀▀▀╬ ◥█████◤ ══╩══╩══ ╬═╬ MAFIA DO RETROGAME ╬═╬ @mafiadoretrogame ╬═╬ ╬═╬ ╬═╬ ╬═╬ ╬═╬ ╬═╬☻/ ╬═╬/▌ ╬═╬/ \ INSCREVA-SE ╚═════════════╝ https://www.youtube.com/@mafiadoretrogame] GAMEPLAY ATÉ ZERAR! https://youtu.be/8nX-Iwqw45k
Not bad but lacks a lot of things, the foundation is pristine, the feel is right, it feels good, plays good but lack of real powerups is jarring. I enjoyed it but it doesn't feel like a kind of game that you would keep coming back to. It still does have the ''genesis'' look and feel to it and that is great, music is a strong point, the enemies are great, and most of all, it is enjoyable. If it had a bit more meat on the bones, it would be so much better, recommended the same way i got it, on an 80% discount for a couple of bucks.
Lazy, lazy, lazy. I would be willing to forgive the lack of save portability and enjoy myself a little, but there's too much *terrible* to sift through. So, as a fan of the Genesis version and the 3DS remake of the GBA remake, upon which this is based, my brutally-honest overview: The graphics "upscaling" has resulted in several *terrible* antialiasing artifacts not present on 3DS (and don't get me started on the huge DPI screw-up I experienced!). The *terrible* audio balancing is compounded by a *terrible* job at programming the music loops, as well as volume sliders that do not work. The performance is *terrible* and constantly jittery even on decent hardware. They used the wrong intro translation and similarly left additional errors in the stage intro videos...and it's all *terrible.* The controls are *terrible* at working with Steam Input. Some options menu values are completely wrong, which is *terrible.* The "training mode" and "continue" options, continue to be unhelpful and *terrible.* And there are some boneheadedly *terrible* crashes that can occur when trying to just view your player data. I'm surprised the basic replayer, records, etc still work, or that the game still responds *okay*(?) at all. Also think it's just dumb that the achievement lists don't match in and out of the game. And it's never been patched. Nor have the Switch and PS4 versions fixed any of the many flaws left in this one. The most *terrible* aspect of all. So in conclusion? Mebius did an excellent job...on 3DS. Any subsequent efforts by them have been slapdash, careless, and *terrible,* and will most likely continue to be *terrible.* *Be not fooled!* Do not buy any version of the Mebius remake that is not on 3DS. One of the best shmups ever deserves to be played as soulfully as possible. And Mebius have apparently lost their soul ever since moving on from their one port.
