I absolutely loved Armored Fist 2. For Nova Logic's DOS game series, that VoxelSpace engine of theirs was truly ahead of its time and they got a lot of great mileage out of it. So much so that they even came up with a Win32 version of it and ported Comanche 3 over to it as Comanche Gold. Armored Fist 2 for DOS is now ported over as Armored Fist 3 for Windows. So basically, you have AF2 for Windows. The game plays well enough, but I do have one problem with it - sound. Nova Logic has always had the market cornered on fantastic in-game sound. The audio tracks and recordings are always done so well that you really think you're working with experienced military in the tank, cockpit or by your side. Really super-believable audio, perfect, really. In Armored Fist 2 for DOS, you were actually in that tank! Not so with Armored Fist 3, however. They really botched it here. The sound effects are great, but the spoken dialogue audio tracks are shockingly horrible. Amazing for Nova Logic, who usually creates the most believable audio in the industry. In AF3, the spoken dialogue sounds like it was written and performed by some 8th grade programmer working out of his bedroom. Even shareware isn't this bad. I'm amazed Nova Logic even let this one out the door. And the Voxel Space engine for Windows - I'm glad it allowed fantastic games like Armored Fist, Delta Force and Comanche to be ported over to Windows, but Delta Force and Comanche were taken to 3D levels. Armored Fist needed to go 3D very badly, but never did. Because of terrible sound dialogues and the very outdated VoxelSpace graphics engine (very tolerable, just not 3D), 4 stars. By today's standards, it would normally get a 3 for graphics alone. I give it 4 stars instead of 3, however, because this is the last great tank battle simulation we may ever see, and it is a fantastic one regardless, especially since there's no other competing tank sims to choose from. Ask yourself this - are you sick to death of all these shooters yet? Of course you are. We ALL are. Are you listening, Nova Logic? We're shootered to death out here. We're drowning in shooters! Please save us and give us an Armored Fist 4 or Comanche 5 or F-22 Lightning 4. ANYTHING other than these endless shooters shooters shooters! We're sick to death of being force fed years worth of nothing but mindless ground grunt stuff. Not everyone wants to be a jarhead. Run shoot die, run shoot die, run shoot die. Enough already! Nova Logic: Please - in the name of all that does not suck - bring back the military jet, tank and helicopter simulators that you did better than anyone else, which dominated the very market you once owned! Regain your former glory and give us back the military hardware combat sim!
A old game that is kind of a challenge right when you start the game. It is hard to kill other tanks if your not used to this game. It's graphics very old and blocky. The gameplay is not really great but can keep you entertained for a little bit. I wouldn't recommend this game to any army buff that wants good tank fighting. Make sure if you do decide to get this game make sure its packed with other games with it.
Yes, its dated. Yes, some report glitches... but its pretty fun. Kind of reminds of a sim/rts/fps cross the way it plays a little. I think the game captures the team strategy thing (leading your group of tanks to victory etc - kinda like playing madden football but tossing a bomb is a bit more dramtic :) ) Get it because your a tank buff and old graphics don't automatically equate to "no good" - sometimes old games with old graphics completely hold their ground when newer competing products comeout... some stay on top for decades - so you never know. I played this long enough to know its pretty cool - and due to lower graphics - you're out in the open more often - and you must use the terrain - period - I like that bit... :) Remember - you're getting an old game here - so unless you really dig tank sims, you might want something more eye-candyish... this is - get in - there are bad guys there, here are your guys - here is the terrain - good luck soldier! LOL - Some days - thats just what the doctor ordered...or general - whatever
I played 2.3 hrs so far on Steam, but on Novaworld and back in 1999 I played this game for like 200 hrs and I remember everything to this day. First of all, it works perfect on Windows 11, which impressive I might add. This is like a mix between realism/arcade. It is easy to get used to also. I usually play it arcade-ish (3rd person view), that is until the s.... hits the fan and you lose your sensor suite, then you have to be fast to select your gunner and manually kill that tank or IFV. There are some major tank battles here, with air support, artillery, and everything the 90s could threw in action wise. This game has infantry, but they're completely useless, except some random ones can fire a missile up your a.., and that was that. A bit tedious taking them out, so just pretend Geneve Convention doesn't exist and run them over. Your friendly close air support are pretty good if you call them in at the right time, otherwise they just drop like flies. This game is a classic, let there be no doubt about it.
Ill start with that I love this game; I loved it when it was first released and I still do. But as others have said it has not aged well, though it’s hard to compare since there are no modern tank Sims. Many of the missions are broken due to poor level design (which I don’t remember being a problem in AF2). Also using the info available at the time (Seemingly excluding gulf war and desert storm seemingly??) the realism is light. You may be riding in the one of the most advance tanks in modern warfare, though most of the time it feels like you’re in a M4 Sherman and the T-55’s and South African Oilfants are tiger tanks because, T-55s, Oilfants and T-72's regularly wipe out hole M1A2 platoons under your command (Blowing the turret off like a T-34 at Kursk against a ‘88’). Which if you base this off the real world combat... Saddam should have kicked the U.S. out of Kuwait and Iraq. On the same note Air Support is just about useless as once again one of the most advanced helicopters the AH64 Apache and most durable plane in the world the A-10 Warthog, gets shot down regularly without getting off a shot because the un-stabilized T-55 gunner shoots it down from across the map. The auto aiming which can be turned on and off, regularly loses sight of target while moving making moving and shooting a chore even though shooting on the move is the basis for modern tank combat, though this is mainly because of the maps being very hilly and mountains. So Pros-It’s a Simulator which is extremely rare breed of game especially today. Con-Not very realistic even at the time of release, and auto is just as much a chore as manually aiming, which means its WWII tank warfare were you have to stop shoot and scoot (But your most likely dead at this point).
I never played Armored Fist 3 or its prequels before I got it with the Steam package "Novalogic Classics". Even though it is called an "action-oriented simulation", I felt it was more of an action game disguised as a simulation. I guess that Novalogic fans liked this game when it came out, however it has sadly not aged well. It does have many missions available but some of them seem to be broken... It also have other problems, such as the autotargeting system that locks on to the least threatening targets at the worst possible times or attack helicopters flown by pilots with death wishes. I don't think I can recommend this game but if you can get it during a Steam sale, feel free to buy it.
I tried to like this game. I really did. And it pains me to write this review. I spent countless hours on Armored Fist 2 when I was just 9 years old as well as on Comanche 3 and F-22 Raptor. And my parents tried to get a copy of AF3 for me to no avail. But maybe it was for the best. First of all, the graphics. And before you say, "Duh it's an old game", this came out in 1999. And it uses the Voxel engine. Voxel. In 1999. At that point, any 3D game that didn't offer 3D acceleration was setting themselves up for failure. It's even worse considering NovaLogic offered it in Commanche Gold and F-22 Lightning 3, so why not here? This mean the maximum resolution is 640x480. So putting this on fullscreen really makes it hard to tell what is what. But let's say you got hold of a CRT monitor and it's easier to see. You will have to deal with bad mission design and AI. In one mission, you have to reach an allied unit before they are overrun. The thing is enemy waypoints are set to end BEHIND the allied unit, so you have a humorous image of the enemy ceasing their attack and are side by side with your allies. No one fights back. Also, you cannot lock on to enemy tanks when they are behind smoke but smoke is useless for you. They will hit you regardless. And speaking of the lock-on, it has a hard time prioritizing threats. You want it to target a T-72 but it targets a paper-mache jeep. The T-72 laughs and kills you. Okay, let's say you ditch the lock on and aim manually; you have to use the keyboard to aim. Yes. Keyboard. Again, this is a 1999 game pretending it's 1995. And the sound is terrible. AF2 had great voice acting. Here, the voices sound like airsoft players pretending they're soldiers. The funny thing is that in AF2, you are in the Marine Corps where here you are in the Army. And I always found the Marines to be more badass than the Army, so if NovaLogic did this to reinforce that belief, they succeeded. Clearly NovaLogic was more focused on the Delta Force series as FPS games were becoming more popular. That has to be the only explanation as F-22 Lightning was the last flight sim they made and Comanche 4 was more arcade than sim. AF3 was just....neglected....
I'm a huge fan of Novalogic games and the Delta Force series, but Armored Fist 3 is a terribly outdated game with very poor controls (keyboard only). The target-assist auto-aim feature is supposed to make things easier since the controls are pretty bad, but it always locks onto a building or random boxes before the real enemy threat! As you're cycling the targets it's too late and the enemy one-shots your tank and the mission is over. There are also some bugs in the game, I encountered a bug where I couldn't even complete the final training mission even though all the targets were destroyed. If the game allowed you to target and fire with your mouse it would make the game more bearable, however there are still bugs in the game that makes it difficult to complete the campaign missions. After completing a couple of missions and then failing some others, I couldn't find myself the will to continue with the frustrating controls and poor game design.
Español and English One of the few tank games in steam, it has a lot of missions (52), its fun and easy to play, however you will need a little of practice, because even if there is auto aim, you will need to aim manually sometimes.
One of my first games. Was super impressive for the time. The audio is incredible. Sometimes the mission bug and don't progress and you have to restart them, but that is something I really don't mind. Still super cool, something that even War Thunder cannot replicate. The only modern thing close to this is "Gunner, HEAT, PC!"
