About
Spellbearers is a top-down, 2D, twin-stick shooter mechanically inspired by the classic SNES game, “Super Smash TV.” Geared towards those looking for a game wrapped in nostalgia, it has a modern look and retro atmosphere, not unlike older “Legend of Zelda,” “Gauntlet,” and “Castlevania” games.

Casting powerful spells, battle against hordes of magical enemies to liberate the rulers of three kingdoms that have been overtaken by dark forces. With staff in hand, do you have what it takes to uphold the title of The Spellbearer?
Darkness sweeps over the mythical world of Spellbourne, out of which emerge beasts and monsters that were said to have long been banished. An evil force has brought them back and must be stopped. This darkness has invaded the three ruling kingdoms of Spellbourne, their rulers overtaken and transformed into hideous and destructive monsters. If there is to be any hope in defeating this evil, all three kingdoms must be saved by restoring the rulers back to their original forms.
Amid the ensuing chaos, Four legendary heroes arise to take up the call. Destined to forever shoulder the burdens of magic, they are known only as the Spellbearers.
Select your Spellbearer and fight against the hordes. You can join the cause alone or with a friend. Choose the Spellbearer that best represents your own soul.
Torch your enemies and stop them from progressing against you and those you protect. You wouldn't want to know the chaos that will commence if failure occurs. Precision and speed are key to success, but the freezing cold may determine the result. The icy terrain will be used against you by the enemy, therefore, you must find your own advantage points to proceed through the frozen dungeons.

Bring down the epitome of evil with your cunning and wits. Mistakes are unacceptable, and the enemy is pristine.
The enemy is strong, but each has its weaknesses. Abnormities and demonic abilities are against you. Can you survive long enough to expose it?
Take a friend on the adventure and work together to prevail against the dark creatures. But remember that your enemies will do whatever it takes to fulfill their objectives.
1-2 Players (Local Co-Op or Online with Remote Play Together): Grab a friend on this adventure and set off as the pair of Spellbearers that the world needs to save itself.
Numerous unique power-ups: Power up with energy grenades that bounce off walls, lightning blasts that unleash devastating chain damage, protective swords made of destructive light, and more.
Explosive visual effects and soundtrack: Enjoy the atmosphere created by power-ups that you select to use throughout your journey, as well as the full original Spellbearers soundtrack.
Action-oriented: The halls of the invaded kingdoms are packed with monsters that appear one after the other.

Twin stick shooter - sluggish controls - graphics = Super Smash TV like but with magic. Does provide some entertainment, but stages are small. Price is also a bit high for this type of game.
Love this game, it has SNES style gameplay and awesome OST to boot. I highly recommend it!
Spellbearers is a 2D twin-stick shooter set on a dungeon crawler with permadeath, fight enemy and defeat boss in 4 differents dungeons. Graphics (6,5 / 10) : The graphics are ok, correct 2d graphics with many different enemy design and 4 differents dungeon design. Gameplay (6.5 / 10) : The base gameplay is pretty good, 2D twin-stick shooter with many different powerup to get during gameplay (fire, electricity, triple shot, shield, sword protect you …) 3 differents are available (easy/practise, normal and hard). This game have permadeath feature, you start with 10/15/20 lifes depending of the difficulty, the game save between each dungeon and before boss (with you’re current amount of life remaining), and you start from begginning if you lose all you’re lifes. Game have some hitbox problem, and that arrive sometimes that you don’t understand what kill you. The game could be play solo or in a local co-op with a friend. Price (4 / 10) : The game cost 17 euros, the price is really too high for a game with only 4 big levels that take around 2-3 hours for complexion, and too much low unlockable during gameplay (only 4 new powerup after defeating each boss) Story/Music/Optimization (5.5 / 10) : Some story, only in english, no vocal voice and too much text based The music is correct, the music fill well the gameplay, but nothing incredible. Don’t have any freeze or fps drop (played on a i5, 2Go VRAM and 8Go RAM). Final Note (5.6 / 10) : Spellbearers is a ok tier 2d twin shooter, set in 4 differents dungeons, but cost way too much for the current content. + : - Many powerup during gameplay - Each dungeon have his own atmospheres / enemy / boss. - : - Low content (game take arount 2-3 houts for main complexion) - Cost too much for the current state of the game. - Permadeath feature. / can’t re-play a solo level.
Simple shooter with great gameplay, but little content after you have completed it once. The story exists, although it is not particularly important. Essentially, it is set in a world where magic reigns. The order is upheld by spellbearers, but when one of them turns rogue and unleashes darkness on the world and its kingdoms, they must track him down and return corrupted rulers to their original state. You start by selecting one of the four characters. Aside from differences in color and facial features, everyone plays the same way. By the way, the gameplay is pretty simple: you only have to move around and shoot. A minor challenge is that there is no diagonal firing and you can only shoot in four directions, so constant movement and positioning is required. Combat occurs in chambers with four entrances. The goal is to survive a wave of various attackers that can appear anywhere in the area or emerge through one of the four entrances. Most die with a single strike, allowing you to dispose of them quickly. Especially if you make use of the random power-ups that emerge in the room. You have to get them quickly since they disappear after a time. Aside from chests that only provide you points, you can get a variety of additional weapons, such as triple-fire, swords that fly around you, bouncing bullets, and more. With the exception of helpful floating orbs that serve as extra bullets and speed enhancements, all power-ups are temporary or only last as long as you have ammo. When you have survived a room, you can move on to the next. Depending on the map layout, you may be able to pick between one or two doors. You can not go back. However, what you choose is irrelevant because the goal is to get to the boss room and defeat it. Each world has a secret room with a lot of goodies; it’s found by shooting into the right wall. Rooms get harder as you progress, with more enemies and other threats such as spikes. You do not have much space because a small area can soon become crowded with enemies. Death comes after a single hit or contact with the enemy, which occurs extremely quickly. Especially against more troublesome foes like mummies that leave acid on the ground or ranged attackers with quick bullets. Because of the game's darkness, which can feel overwhelming at times and make some things difficult to see, it is possible to step on a spike or into a bomb that has just spawned in the area. Fortunately, you have many lives. Also, while death is horrible because you lose everything, power-ups appear all over the place and can swiftly restore you to full strength. This is visible during epic boss battles. Each includes two stages and requires some dodging when aiming at a weak point. A slain boss adds one extra weapon to the power-ups, but does not affect the main gameplay. Achievements will require several runs. Sadly, after beating the game once, I didn’t find it interesting to go back. You don’t unlock anything and you can’t choose stages.
The game feels really good to play. The controls are tight and aiming feels smooth and natural. I spent a good 30 minutes just using the buttons without realizing you could use the other joystick even. the bosses are an absolute standout with incredible design and unique intuitive vulnerability mechanics. II really enjoy the art design from the almost nightmarish bosses to the cartoon player avatar the game is without a doubt delightful to look at. The power ups were all enjoyable as well. Each one had its uses and purpose and i always felt obligated to snag them whenever possible. The game is definitely a challenge but you start to get accumulated to the mechanics very quickly. It's a game where you get better just by virtue of playing rather than leveling up. The music is incredible and i would listen to on its own if it was available. On the downsides i did tend to lose my character in the particle effects leading to my death more than a few times, and the sights and sounds of the various attacks and power ups can be overwhelming. That means i can only play this game for short bursts before my eyes are struggling to keep up with the action on screen. However, what i did play was fun, frenetic, and exciting. The bosses kept driving me to come back for more just to see what the next design was. Overall i would definitely recommend this to someone especially if you're a fan of twin stick shooters and medieval mage aesthetics.
This game has good potential and so far, playing this game has been very interesting and I enjoyed playing it for the most part. However, it severely lacks content outside of the story. I was able to complete this game in under an hour and a half unfortunately. I would’ve loved to see more love and time put into the spells and skills into this game. Because whenever I was playing, I found myself relying on just four separate skills being the lightning, flamethrower, shield, and the tornado the most. Every other skill was just there, and it really had no importance when those other skills did the job better. So, if the game had a skill-tree or other kind of upgrades certain skills or changes their effectiveness it would give the player the opportunity to come up with creative ways to explore and get through the game as well as builds/setups or even one ability to be able to hold on to until a dire situation. Overall, I thought this game was good and could be even better though the game has its pros and cons, and this is my opinion as well as a list of my thoughts on this matter. Pros • Fun playing multiplayer with friends • Great abilities and skills • Maps and enemies were designed good. • Fun and interesting boss fights • Special rooms to find with each map (exciting feature to have) • Good setup with controls as well as settings (Just wish there was a colorblind mode.) • Good sounds, music, and sound effects Cons • Needs a main character design update (Honestly, I was thinking the enemies as well as the bosses stood out and looked better than the main characters of the story.) • Lighting (Even with me being colorblind, I struggled to see certain foes in dark rooms and have no idea what is going on.) • Better Aim (Certain games like this allow you to aim entirely at 360. However, this game you’re only able to aim horizontally, vertically, and diagonally which puts you at a disadvantage most the time.) • Lacking Content (Story feels like it can be better improved upon as well as needing more unique game-play features to increase the overall playtime of this game.) I give this game a 6/10.
[08/20/23] I will preface this review by saying I do not normally play games like this, and I have never played Super Smash TV before, the game that this is supposedly influenced by. That said, I have had a good deal of fun trying out this game and have a few things to say about it. WIthout further ado, let's begin. Some small issues I encountered when playing: - When booting up the game, the resolution defaults to 320x200 60hz. I was unable to see any of the menu items clearly. It was not without some assistance before I could select the appropriate menu options to adjust to my desired resolution (1920x1080 60hz). As a consequence, I was not able to read the opening sequence without having to change the resolution, which can affect one's initial impressions of the game. Of course, this issue could vary depending on what system the game is installed on. - No option to stop autoplay text. During the scenes that describe the story before getting into the gameplay, you are given two options: Press [A] for Next, and Start for Skip. There should be an option to toggle autoplay text, for simply user convenience. I do not think I have played much twin-stick shooters in the past, if at all. To keep this review brief, I will list my pros, cons, and thoughts when it came to my experience in playing this game. Pros: - Game plays smoothly and controls are intuitive enough. - Art style is quite appealing for this type of game, background art and character design are serviceable. - Music is pretty good throughout and adds to the atmosphere of the game, especially during the final boss. - Bosses are well designed and fun to play against, especially the final boss. Cons: - Low amount of content, I feel there is definitely room to add more content especially in terms of progression. Starting off, the game, at least on the first level, can be a bit overwhelming with all the new spells. I can see the appeal of figuring out the spells on your own though. Perhaps more smaller levels in between the boss-centric ones that only spawn a few certain types of spells at a time (aside from the spells you learn later on) before ultimately adding them as an option to randomly appear once the player becomes more accustomed to the types of spells there are and how they work. Mini-bosses can be created as more content. There's a lot more that can be added, but I think it does not necessarily have to be too complex. There's definitely a roguelite element too that can possibly lend itself to this game. - Lighting can be a bit of a detriment. The low lighting could just be by design choice, but I think for instances where the Spellbearer is facing upwards, it becomes harder to discern where they are because of the black cape that does not glow. - Screen Spam. This might actually be tied to the lighting, but it becomes hard to register where things are when a lot of things are going off. Of course, one could always not fire their magic and focus on dodging. Maybe change the lighting of similar enemy attacks and one's own magic? This could just be a design choice. The lighting in some parts I think can be adjusted. Notable Thoughts: - I found it interesting that the points do not reset when dying (losing all your lives.) - Also, dying at the boss level does not reset you back to the beginning of the entire level, which I see as a good thing - There are moments during the final boss where if you die and not have enough speed boosts, there will be places where death becomes inevitable (such as after the lasers stop firing and the body moves a lot quicker. Could be simply game design choice, so I don't necessarily consider it a con, just means that dying once can snowball into dying many more times until one can pick up enough power-ups. - (Possible bug?) There are times where it feels I don't die or lose a life, even though I am at 0 lives. Perhaps there is a mechanic I am not aware of or it is simply a bug. All in all, I think this game has a lot of potential and can definitely be polished further to create a truly magical experience.
It's very much Smash TV, done with larger sprites and therefore a more cramped-feeling arena. It's done reasonably well! Just know that this is very much an arcade game: there are lives and a score, and there isn't meta-progression per se (you do get to continue from the start of the next level if you reach it). If that's what you want, great, go for it! If not, this began development before Vampire Survivor became A Thing which means it may be at odds with your expectations if you're expecting something more like VS or its many clones.
It's a pretty simple game, but it does the twin stick shooter genre really well. The only problem is that there is so much visual spam on the screen that you can die from things you can't even see. It wouldn't be a big deal but the reset you get from dying is enough to cause you to start dying over and over again, and it's not fun to be punished for things you can't even see.
