Collection of 2 shoot em up games from the early noughties with a newly added timeless mode (not sure if that counts as a seperate entry). To me this genre feels kinda all the same, this game is no exception. It's fine to shoot enemies and avoid being hit by bullets for an hour or two but I personally wouldn't stick around for much longer. Local multiplayer is a nice bonus tho.
Another old school shooter with great presentation and even better gameplay. This is essentially a collection of two games in one package plus timeless game mode with more modern approach and 3D graphics. Whole game is made in oriental style setting with some sci-fi vibe like futuristic vehicles and mechs. Plenty of characters to choose from each with complementary stats to each other. During batlle you're able to charge and release your swords to deflect enemy bullets. Collect shards along the way to use your Vasara and smash enemies aside with the bombs. Engaging music and nice arcade sounds adds to the whole. Difficulty wise you put as many credits as you like however to complete the final stage you only use one credit - no checkpoints. Support for 2 player coop mode and 4 player in timeless mode. Inherently a legacy from era of the great arcade shooters!

Bringing the nostalgia back for those who seek it.

Sum-Up

In-depth analysis further down.

[th]🟩 Pros[/th] [th]🟥 Cons[/th]

• A classic franchise brought to life for those who have appreciated It back then. • VASARA Timeless looks quite good and brings quite a nice nostalgic touch to the game. • Difficult shoot'em up, that require a lot of precision and training. • Great variety of ships and difference between VASARA 1 & 2. It's a difficult game that you're required to replay over and over again to get all achievements. It can be fun for those that enjoy shoot'em ups, but it does feel rather bare bone with modern shoot'em up and once you finish the campaigns the only thing stopping you from stopping the game is trying to 100% the game.

💵 Is it worth buying? Unless you're a old-time fan or get this at a discount, I'd not bother. It's not something I personally like to put my money in, but it's a fair decent price if you're willing to spend 10 bucks on the game.

🎮 Steam Deck Compatibility It's a verified game and runs smoothly on the Steam Deck. I've had no issues running and playing on it. I highly recommend playing it on it if you want as the first two games are outdated and look better on smaller screens.

🧾 Verdict: Decent
Rating Chart Here VASARA Collection is a decent game in my eyes because of the fact that the game has introduced the Timeless mode which revitalizes the graphics and the gameplay a little bit to a more modern, yet traditional shoot'em up kind of style. Although it has its flaws when it comes to the classic 2, I can't place this game any higher as I've never been aware of this franchise before and for me, it was a decent experience as a game.

In these arcades shoot'em up classics which take place in an alternate timeline Feudal Japan where technologically advanced weaponry and equipment are a reality, and heroes use flying motorcycles with amazing firepower and fierce melee weapons to destroy their enemies and try to survive.
⚔ Gameplay:
Rate: ★☆☆☆☆ VASARA Collection follows the classic shoot'em up style of game, where you're able to select between 3 types of space ships in the first game and 4 in the second one, as well 8 in the Timeless game, and try to survive a bullet hell and kill as many enemies on the screen as possible, by using your special abilities, doges and calculated positioning as you go through each mission at a time. In the classics, you have a coin system, where you get to continue at any given time until the very end of the game from where you died, while in Timeless you're given a couple of lives and if you die, you start from the very beginning of the game. Boss fights are challenging and require muscle memory to understand the sprays of bullets and try to make space for the little screen you have in the classic games. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2871727492
😄 Fun:
Rate: ★☆☆☆☆ I'm not a big fan of shoot'em up, but I can say I will enjoy them sometimes. This game feels more like a chore the more you play it. It's difficult and in VASARA 1 & 2 you barely have any space to dodge bullets, making oftentimes some fights very difficult and challenging to defeat unless you spend countless hours on the game. I can see this being a huge issue of making money off of players in arcades because of how difficult it was and the only way to try again is to insert another coin and try again.
🏞 Visuals:
Rate: ★★☆☆☆ Despite the fact that VASARA 1 & 2 are outdated, I think that back in 2000 when they came out, they looked quite decent. Decent pixels and style, but barely any polishing were made on the cinematics, even if they were a few slide shows. It hurts to see that some characters from Japanese are still present and looks really bloated and difficult to understand while English happens as well. A much more polished UI would be appreciated, but I can understand that the games are old and not much can be done. VASARA Timeless looks pretty decent and ramps up the graphics quite a bit. I like that characters, ships, and heroes are kept based on the first two, which for fans is really nice to see. Nothing super spectacular visuals, but pretty good improvement. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2871727588
🔊 Sound:
Rate: ★★☆☆☆ Music and sound effects are chaotic and not memorable at all. Voice actors aren't that great either, and it just sounds like an overall eruption of sounds coming from all directions. Characters shout when abilities are fired, and enemy projectiles making difficult to understand what you see and hear on in the game. VASARA Timeless does a better job at making the game feel more polished, so if you're looking for that, expect a significant improvement, but not remarkable.
📖 Story:
Rate: ★☆☆☆☆ Story is rather poor and confusing. You don't know why you fight and whom you need to fight until the very end. The cutscenes move so fast it's difficult to read and in the classic, it's difficult to read the text when the Insert a Coin text pops up.
🧵 Length:
☑️ Short 🔲 Average 🔲 Long 🔲 Unlimited The story for both games is rather short and takes about 1 hour to complete on an easier difficulty. If you wish to complete this game you need 10-15 hours to go over and over the area. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2871727922
🧩 Difficulty:
🔲 Easy 🔲 Normal ☑️ Hard ☑️ Brutally Hard ☑️ Impossible The game starts rather hard and keeps at it throughout the game. VASARA 1 & 2 struggle with space and makes mobility difficult, while VASARA Timeless becomes gradually more and more difficult to overcome as you progress through other stages. Projectiles become almost impossible to dodge and at some point you'll have to take the hit, die, and start again, because it becomes impossible to continue.
⭕Conclusion:
VASARA Collection is a great nostalgic entry for PC gamers who have enjoyed the first two games in their youth and wanted to experience the games once more. As a player who isn't familiar with the franchise, I can't say I've had the best time, but I don't regret playing them either. In fact, I can understand how they were appreciated in Japan and maybe other parts of Asia, and possibly in the west as well. Simple controls, challenging fights, and easy to fall into a flow after getting used to the game mechanics. It's a decent game that is worth revisiting as a fan but should be aware that the originals do feel really outdated and not as fun as modern shoot-‘em-ups. A true shmup for masochists. Insanely difficult and not helped by the poor quality port. The game renders at like 480p with huge borders on the side. The other thing is the points the enemies drop look similar to the shots being fired at you. Add those together and slow movement and you are going to get destroyed. If they brought the resolution to full screen and also had the option for a vertical screen it would get recommended but for now, get it on sale only if you like pain. I am also referring to the first two games and not the timeless for this. I played this offline on the Deck as well, doesnt show full playtime.
I just don't get it. It's pretty much the only shmup I've ever bought that I didn't like. The melee thing just doesn't feel great to use.
Rating: 7/10 Vasara Collection is only for the most die hard bullet hell fans sadly though i would highly recommend picking it up on sale and trying it out for an hour and see how its like and also its a must have for your Steam library. This re-release lacks any accessibility options or changes to make the game a bit easier for anyone regardless of skill level to experience. So if you want a challange its still there but its not easier for those that want to have fun spamming bombs. I do think these games are really fun though very punishing. They have amazing artstyle, good sound track and fun gameplay though my main complaint is the character model is big and then the hitbox is one third of your ship model. It's not bad if you want to learn the game but the entire game does depend on it so if you want to have any fun dodging bullets you have to learn it a little bit. I played Vasara 1 and a little bit of timeless mode revisiting this game and i got say its a blast to play. I think i will never be able to achieve my vision of every beating it or getting every achievement but just playing it a little bit every now and then to have fun won't be such a bad thing. Like i said this game is oddly and very specific in what it is and so someone who is not good at bullet hell's but wants to have fun needs it to be easier because this entire art style and setting is very appealing but you would get thrown off by the difficulty when you just want to have fun for 30 or 40 minutes. I had fun revisiting this after 3 and half to 4 years and i think if this game game accessibility options and a mode where its slightly easier i would give it a higher rating and 100% enjoy it more. In the end this is a great game but only for die hard bullet hell fans ,as someone casual like me will spend a lot of time learning how to play when all i want to do is blast some things and destroy some bosses for 30 or 40 minutes not learn the entire game just to do that. I want to hold attack and relax without a worry in the world. Still an amazing game to check out for an hour and see how its like for you, just a shame its soo hard but maybe its part of the appeal for you.
