Space Giraffe is an abstract action arcade style game that takes place in a succession of beautiful environments generated by an advanced graphics synthesizer. It presents itself as a shooter but the more you play the more you discover the hidden depths and strategies that make the gameplay satisfyingly rich and rewarding.

If you say "Space Giraffe is bad, you can't see what you're doing, you just die for no reason!" then you are bad at the game and don't understand how it works. It's really as simple as that. Everyone who takes the time to learn how to properly play this game ends up loving it, because it's a beautiful, satisfying, addictive game and there's nothing else in the world like it. That being said the PC port, at least on Windows 10, is inferior to the XBLA original. There's a bug I've noticed where after a while of play, certain important sound effects start dropping out, making later levels in the game more difficult than they would normally be. It also lacks the vibration feature of the XBLA version which was extremely useful (your controller would vibrate every time your multiplier went up, so you'd easily know if you've bulled enough enemies off at once) so I would recommend you grab the original if you have access to a 360 or Xbox One.
If you ever wanted Tempest 2000 to be a blurry pile of crap, then this is the game for you!
A masterpiece, criminally overlooked. It widens your perception. It teaches you to see things, things you people wouldn't believe...
https://youtu.be/opeF3RwCmkI The over the top visuals, effects, and audio come at the cost of obfuscating the already abstract gameplay. This makes this experience at best a curiosity as player struggle to understand.
the oft maligned, frequently misunderstood space giraffe is a subversion of the tube shooting game, a subset of arcade shooting games that may consist of 5-15 individual tube shooting game specimens total.a part of me has a disdain for this game yet i consider it to be the best game of its console, the xbox 360?(any good arcade game should leave the player with some sort of disdain for it to keep you pushing through)now i arrive here, revisiting this game on personal computer first of all, even with the "bright flashy lights mode" this does not hit or vibe as hard as the 360 version, the way the backgrounds look and react to the sound and game on the 360 build is phenomenal sht... consequently this beautiful hazy game was hard to see things on the screen, so toning it down a little bit to increase clarity is understandable, though i still find the 360 to be the better experience if you have access to it. the gameplay itself, you are essentially herding, shooting (automatically) to maintain the power zone and defend from projectiles, spikes and other enemies that cannot be bulled. knowing where to aim your shots in the levels to be able to defend yourself & fill the power zone as you gather the herd to take care of them. a very soothing game, yet it does not skimp out on the difficulty at all. relax, yet maintain awareness. once you get used to the games whacked out mechanics the flow seems to become natural, until it's stomping time. leaves me feeling some sort of a clarity in my head. it still looks great here, i have not tried the clearer version of this game, but its presence is appreciated. a legendary fn game(any sort of line breaks i add to this review seem to be breaking i do not like it)
If you like score-attack, arcade shooters and psychedelic visuals this game is for you.
Space Giraffe is the greatest work of art of our generation. I must admit that when I first played it, I found it too hard and unforgiving, and that's speaking as someone who had played many Jeff Minter games before AND had read the README file that most players haven't seen and which provides much-needed help on the game's rules. But when you understand the rules and the game clicks with you, it's unlike anything else - and it's such a singular vision that it seems unlikely that any other game developer would ever make a game like this. Even the level names are genius!
I literally can't see what i'm doing in the game. Even at 4k, i'm controlling a wiggly cluster of blurry yellow lights at the bottom of the screen, can't see the enemies through my own shots. On top of that it's just making a lot of very loud and unpleasant sounds, and then insults me in the score screen. Sorry jeff.
Super underrated. Better than Tempest, would love to see a Space Giraffe 2, or a Space whatever animal Jeff's got lying around to follow this up.
Easily the best psychedelic shootemup I've ever played
