Disclaimer, there is a lot of potential for a VR language learning app. This just isn't there yet but I hope someone figures out how to do it. Picked this up for $2 and I don't think it's worth much more. If you aren't already familiar with the language you are trying to learn, this won't help at all. It's a cute little app but nothing is dynamic or changing, and for language learning its very limited. Don't expect to learn a language if you pick this up. There are very few scenarios and all of them are mostly static. You have a few options in your responses, but I speak a little of the language I was trying to learn, and many of my inputs were not accepted. They either need to introduce machine learning into processing the language, or at very least add in a duolingo style user feedback that lets other options become viable. That's still obviously no easy task, but without it im not sure how anyone can make it super useful.
The crappy learn language apps on my phone are better than this. Very disappointing. For example: It will show you an animal, and say the name... but never give you a chance to learn it. It just moves forward to a couple more animals, and then you can try to repeat the last one only. Not worth the price. Even if it was free... it would still cost to much. They should have payed me to try this so I could tell them it is garbage. Back to the drawing board devs!
BROKEN! Does not work at all! Well past minimum specs and this wreck wont get past the first screen No input is recognized or acknowledged... I should say, NO input registers. I can click around on the different language buttons on the first screen, but no selection registers in the app. No help on the website, not even a mention of a VR version. Refunded! UPDATE! Does NOT work at all with Index controllers. I turned on a vive controller and was able to get in the program. It is rather clunky, basic and situational conversation oriented. It starts on a train where you exchange pleasantries with the only other passenger, until the ticket agent asks for your ticket and leaves. The voice pickup is not very accurate and there was no voice trainer to improve the accuracy. After several tries to get basic words and phrases correct, I gave up. However, it does accept obviously wrong input to progress the conversation as it shows what it thinks you said and kept going anyway. This program would be great if it was approached in a classroom style rather than complete immersion. The immersion is not very realistic and the dialog is canned with preset responses. It would be great if it had an Alexa (Google) or even Bixby (Galaxy) type of input so that you could actually have more of a conversation with it. The format, as is, takes you too fast into a conversation in a non-native language. I feels much more exploratory than educational.
looks like other people have problems running this program, for me it works very fine without any glitches. I'm using it under arch linux using steamplay/proton with a rtx 2080 and a htc vive. you have the option to choose from 30 languages which language you speak and which one you want to learn. that's amazing imho, and that alone a steal for the current price. there are several scenes you can choose from, f.e. taxi, train, shopping, ticket terminal etc. dialogs are well done, you can read the spoken text, play spoken sentences again and the audio detection of what you have said is very good. there are some rough edged, f.e. I just tried the vocabulary training mode and it doesn't look really ready yet (roughly cut out single words, no interaction - at least in the vegetable shop :)). It makes more sense anyway to "play" the scenes, so I can perfectly live without the vocabulary mode. graphics are nice enough for a language-learning program - no need to improve them imho. I've only $played ~1 hour so far, but if you're going to learn some sentences of a foreign language (imho it is polite to speak at least a bit of the language of the country you are visiting) I'd recommend to try it. I'm glad it works so good on my system and I'm happy to learn a bit czech :) I'd buy it even if it only had german<->czech mode again. it would work fine without VR of course, so a pancake mode might help a broader audience to learn a foreign language (maybe wvewn local coop :)). great useful app, thank you!
muito bom recomendo
I bought it to learn Spanish Now I can say "Hola"
A very intuitive VR program. The voice recognition needs some work. As does some more basic language courses. some form of having an interactive alphabet would do wonders. For learning basic communication however, it is a solid recommendation for me.
missions/classes never start :(
A pretty neat little experience, a positive step in the right direction, and useful for the price. I'm very happy they've included WMR support; I was waiting for this for months. This is useful for language learning; it is not yet virtual immersion...but it could get there. Overall, this feels like a proof-of-concept more than a finished product. It's a useful proof-of-concept for language learning, but it seems like there's so much more untapped potential still; hopefully coming. I used this to practice my Mandarin Chinese, and I've found it good so far: you can choose how much help you get, show characters or pronunciation or translation, and it does a pretty decent job of recognizing what I say. The actor speed is realistic, and the dialogue seems realistic and appropriate. Some unpolished elements: the voice actor changes in the middle of an interaction, it's like the waitress has multiple personality disorder or something; there's no attempt to make it feel like the country of the target language--no signs in your target language, no landmarks, and no ethnically appropriate characters (I've never seen so many Caucasians speaking Chinese in one place); and I've had little tracking glitches show up. Improving all of those things would help trick your brain into feeling true immersion; I hope they're coming. This feels like a taste of the future. Bottom line: worth the price for a simple little language practice app. Isn't yet a magical substitute for true immersion, but with active development it *could* become exactly that.
