"I'm not here to save anyone. I'm just here to do my job."
Spaceport Hope is a retro-style 2D action platform shooter with a fair of content and challenge. Offering a hand-crafted world packed with unique bosses and tons of enemies, Spaceport Hope is set in a futuristic world where humans have established trade relations with an advanced alien race called the Cilarians. You play as Cole, a badass courier who takes a government job to deliver a package to a spaceport. However, things go wrong when the Cilarians launch an assault on the spaceport and the surrounding planets. Cole has to fight his way through various environments, enemies, and bosses to save his own skin as well as the world he's living in. The game features 10 different planets to explore, each one with its own theme, enemies, and gameplay features. You will encounter aliens, pirates, hackers, robots, and more on your mission to save mankind as you know and love it. You'll also find various items and upgrades that will help you survive and unlock new areas. Some of these items include weapons, health upgrades and more. The combat is fast-paced and fairly challenging, requiring you to use your reflexes and skills to defeat the enemies and bosses. You can choose from 12 different weapons, each one with its own strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, you will also have to deal with environmental hazards, puzzles, and platforming sections that will test your abilities. As with most platformers, timing is a crucial aspect of playing the game, and if (like me) you are not particularly good at the genre, you may find it a little more of a slog than one might expect. One of the highlights of the game is its soundtrack, which consists of catchy and upbeat tunes that match the mood of each planet. The sound effects are also well done and add to the immersion of the game. The difficulty can be inconsistent and spiky at times, and while it rarely feels unfair, there are areas which you feel could have benefited from a little more playtesting or polishing. The only other real issue worth mentioning is the save system: it works, but some of the save points are poorly placed, potentially leaving you to play through sections over and over again just to reach a checkpoint. While it is nothing special in terms of story and/or mechanics, Spaceport Hope is a largely enjoyable ride (frustrations aside) and worth picking up at its low asking price. This is a proper retro throwback, mechanisms and graphics included, to a simpler time. Played on Windows 11 Pro x64 without any issues.
Lack of polishment and personality. More like an action platformer instead of metroidvania. Some bad things: -You can double jump from the beginning, so you HAVE to double jump for almost everything. This means you have to push a button twice to do most of the jumps. -A lot of walking and backtracking. -Not much personality. -Face portraits are a bit ugly. -Some savepoints are bad. For example the one when lava overflows, you jump your way up and you have to fight a boss with your HP at lows. (That's where I stopped playing).

This game is a bit old and clunky and simple. But it's also competent and it all works and, wow, it's cheap! It also reminds me of old video games - specifically the way nothing in the plot is really explained or introduced and there are enemies all over the place for similarly unexplained reasons.
