About
Songs of Syx is a low fantasy city-builder with vast real-time battles simulating tens of thousands of citizens and soldiers. Start off as an insignificant village and build, scheme, and fight your way towards a mighty city state and empire. The mechanics are deep and true to life, where small events can spiral into the collapse of kingdoms.

Full of different races, cultures, old and new gods and strange creatures - everything in Songs of Syx is connected. Night turns to day, climate and weather change, and migrations of animals and people flow. Droughts and pestilence, raiders, traders and bandits, and new discoveries will ensure kingdoms and empires come and go with or without your intervention. Everything you do generates new unique stories and worlds each time you play a new game.

Win the hearts of your subjects or whip them into submission. Have their number swell your insignificant village into a metropolis of your design. Watch tens of thousands of individually simulated citizens and slaves interact: each with their own life, religion, fears and desires.
Build each house, street and plaza with utmost care in order to keep the needs of your citizens, your state and your army balanced.
But be careful not to overreach: everything you build requires upkeep and a slight disruption to your production, or a dip in your standing, could quickly spiral out of control. Your people will not hesitate to turn against an incompetent ruler.

Recruit, train and equip citizens of your great city. Gather allies and vassals, conscript traveling mercenaries and local peasants to bolster your ranks with up to 50,000 individual units. Use tactics and skill to encircle your enemy in massive real-time battles, or let your reputation demoralize them before the fight.
Each soldier is simulated and will require supplies produced by the industrial might of your great state. The outcome of battle will dictate the rise and fall of empires.

Break the backs of slaves as they make your beds and swab your floors. Just throw them a bone from time to time to keep them from rising up in revolt. Appoint nobles, or import them from other kingdoms and have them manage different aspects of your kingdom to boost your production and standing, but be careful with whom to trust, and reward them accordingly as some might get the idea to usurp you or join your enemies.

As your capital grows, it must be sustained by the villages, towns, lumber camps, castles and ports that constitute your kingdom. But you are not alone. Other kingdoms and despots are either eager to forge an alliance or expand their borders, so tend to your relations. To grow your might, you must engage in diplomacy, trade and war.

Thanks to the fulfilment of our first Kickstarter stretchgoal the game will have a fully fledged soundtrack made by @jasinkamusic. We already have some tracks done which neatly fit into the playable prototype.

Reviews
An interesting and rich game that is hamstrung by a hideous UI and a real lack of elegance.

The game is way to much with way to little explaining. After 200 hours I still have no idea why folks start to leave. They want a certain food and I load them up on it, yet I still get red arrows saying that is not what they want. The game does very little to explain what is going on, and the tech tree has to be one of the worse I have ever seen. The different races are great, yet I have no way to keep them seperate so they keep killing each other (which is another dumb idea, why would folks move to a city full of people they hate if they are only going to fight with them all the time). They give you specific options to keep the races away from each other, but it is nearly impossible to do so. Since certain people want to go get a job in a different area than I want them they become homeless, which makes things even worse; the AI is not that great and the game does not give you simple options to keep folks away from a certain area (like where all the race of folks that dislike them live) thus making it impossible to keep folks from fighting and killing each other. The game has some good things about it, but it has so much going on that is not explained (like why people are becoming unhappy) it makes the game annoying and not worth spending the money on. Stop being so mysterious as to why folks are leaving; if they want a specific food tell me, do not say they want the food their race prefers, that i have a bunch of, with food stalls being at 100% so they can all reach the food yet they are mad about it; literally a waste of time trying to figure out what is wrong. I know there are folks out there that enjoy these cryptic games that do not explain anything at all, but for those of you that do not have hours and hours to waste, save your money!
I really enjoyed this game however the recent updates that focus difficulty and spreadsheet min/maxing are absurd. Maybe I will try it again in the future but as of now the game needs better tooltips, better UI, and ANOTHER overhaul on research. I don't want over a quarter of my population researching but that's what the dev wants I guess. Also apparently stockpiling food is just not possible anymore. The canals change has basically destroyed my latest city now so I will just give the game a break. Mods help but often aren't updated when the game is updated so best not to rely on them, plus this review is about the game itself. Very telling when the overall review score goes from a 94% down to 85% over the last two updates that the dev is taking this game in the wrong direction. I bought the game as a sandbox but am being forced to play a very specific way and I just don't enjoy it anymore. When you mention it to the community they just say ''user error, get gud'' meanwhile the tooltips to explain how to 'git gud' are non-existent.
There seems to be beautiful potential if you can get past how unfriendly and unwelcoming it is designed to play, but I could not. It almost seems anti-player in how convoluted the interfaces function. There simply has to be a better way.
It's essentially a ruined, larger scale, Rimworld-y colony management. Ruined because the abysmal job output, the horribly unbalanced citizens' goods consumption and their absurd demands of standard of living take all the fun out of it. You either minmax or die. A real shame because the vibes are there, but they are absolutely not worth all these headaches. Edit: also all the snoring and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ quickly become annoying, a more detailed control on sound effects is desperately needed.
Dev is the type of man to cry about politics in games then unironically make a "Lives matter" joke in his game.
I've never played a game with a less rewarding and more frustrating method of handling technology and research.
