Skies above the Great War je svým způsobem výjimečná hra, která kombinuje strategii a akci v prostředí první světové války.
BLUF: It is a fun simple game. Worth the price and to support the dev. I've been playing this game a lot recently, and I can confidently say that if you're seeking a fun, straightforward World War I air combat experience, this is it. While not a hardcore flight simulator, it offers a flight sim light feel that perfectly scratches my itch for Great War aerial warfare. The game blends RTS elements, allowing you to manage the battlefield without direct aircraft control, though jumping into a dogfight personally is incredibly enjoyable. The campaign offers good flexibility; you can adjust its length from a standard 100% to an extended 500% by setting the required war favorability percentage. Outside of the combat, there are elements of management where you can oversee factory production, progressively adding superior fighters and heavy bombers. Recruiting and training pilots is another feature, letting you improve their performance over time. Ultimately, if you're after a simple, fun, and engaging Great War air combat game, look no further. However, if a serious, high-fidelity flight simulator is what you seek, you might want to explore other options. For fans of indie games, this title comes highly recommended.
Very fun and promising game. The combination of managing air forces, researching new planes and flying them as pilot or using a gunner station is quite addictive. As far as the fighters are concerned the game includes all well-known types on the German and Entente side of the Western Front. Two-seater planes and bombers are depicted as basic types that do not change during the war the rest of the planes has to be researched. Though the dogfight graphics are not state of the art, they are sufficient enough to – together with the rather simple movement mechanics and different stats of the planes – make dogfights fun. Pilots receive medals if successful. Since players can automate much of the management part (research, distribution of planes and pilots to squadrons, allocating them to schools) so they can decide whether to concentrate more on one or the other. Automating airfields, they’d run the risk that the AI doesn’t understand the player’s strategy though. Therefore, given the constant cropping up of missions that have to be serviced in order not to lose moral the emphasis is rather on managing than on dogfights. The plane AI seems to be ok regarding the limited time one has in the battle because of fuel shortage and reflecting the different airplane types. In general, the planes seem to perform according to their historical performance although some of the stats are probably owed to game balance. Although there are still minor bugs, all in all already a good & thrilling indie game and imo definitely a must for WW1 plane enthusiasts.
the concept is frigging AWESOME... This could very well have been a great game to play but... the Excecution is Friiiiiging HORRRIBLE!!! could they save the game? absolutely, but they already released it and as it is, it is a spiritual sequel to ancient art of war in the skies, a game that is 30 years old but better made in pretty much most aspects
Definitely one of the better WWI games out there. It's not perfect but the dev is working on it. Main issues have to do with optimization but with an rtx2080 it runs fine. The main thing is, it's fun to play and captures the feel of the air war and technological development.
I've put a couple of hours into this game now and despite a bit of a hurdle getting used to the controls, it seems like a fun little air combat game based on the WW1 western front. You have several airfields to start with, can deploy new planes and pilots, customize the look of your machines, and take off to fight your enemies over the front lines. Various missions including fighter patrols, recon and photo recon, bombing, interdiction of enemy balloons, and even shooting down enemy zeppelins can be undertaken in real time. There is a small variety of machines that can be deployed initially, and you may research and deploy newer aircraft as the game progresses. There are a few bugs and the game itself is a bit rough around the edges, but it is totally playable.
