Skautfold: Moonless Knight is a very open-ended Metroidvania, featuring a totally unique battle system. Set in an alternate history Japan in 1900, Lovecraftian horrors have plagued the world, as our very Moon opens up and becomes our end.

Skautfold: Moonless Knight is a really good game and an excellent follow-up to Skautfold: Into the Fray and another good game in the Skautfold series, so let's talk about the story. In the Angelic Empire of Britannia things have finally quieted down for the people, with the rebel uprising in Portland Island stopped and its leader captured by the third knight everything seems quiet. But behind closed doors the Queen and her closest confidants know the truth, they know the planet Earth only has one year left as it was revealed by Hito and princess Lillian that the moon shall open up awakening an elder god who will battle with the fog, but the battle of the two Elder Gods will cause the moon to fall and wipe out all life on Earth, but all hope is not lost for Wilhelm talks about a citadel that had landed in Japan hundreds of years ago and gave Oda Nobunaga the power to not only conquer Japan, but all of Asia and erect his Dawn Empire. So the queen sends her second knight Gray Von Reuenthal and her top scientist Noah Alwiess to talk to the current emperor of the Dawn Empire on a collaboration to build a new Citadel and save humanity, but there are many outside forces who desire the power of the Citadel and soon the second knight is thrust into a fight for his life and if he fails all humanity is doomed. Okay then let's talk about the likes, the story is very good as I said in my previous reviews, this series does a good job at world building, using real life historical figures and events, but giving them a twists like Oda Nobunaga being able not just to conquer Japan, but all of Asia with lovecraftian powers. Also the game does a good job in foreshadowing what the next story is going to be about without outright spoiling it. The story also has great continuity with characters mentioning previous events while giving their own thoughts on them and on that the story also answers a few questions I had in previous games, particularly the first game and it's fake pianos. The gameplay is very good it's a mixture of the three previous games it has the whole explore the manner and its outer grounds like the first game, the metroidvania style/able to get different power-ups upon exploration that allows you to traverse previously unexplored areas like the second game and the combat and top-down aspects of the third game. I also like how this upgrade system works as you don't have to put your YTH stones into how strong you are or anything like that, you just get stronger as you continually play the game like increasing your health or your skill with a weapon during your playthrough or you can find scrolls that upgrade your abilities, another interesting thing about the gameplay is the fact that you don't have to kill the bosses like in the first game you can actually spare them and in doing so changes the gameplay a bit, if you spare the bosses some of them will either help or hinder you like if you spare the monk sometimes you'll see enemies in different areas already have been killed or if you spare the tango almost all the chests you open up will have a bomb inside, it's a very interesting idea of sparing bosses that was in the first game and adding more to it in this game. The weapons are good you basically get different types of Japanese bladed weapons, a katana, a big katana, a spear and twin katana as well as a dagger and you can choose which weapons fit your play styles. The characters are really good/still continue to be good each one is quite unique with their own personality, I like Gray he feels like he has the personalities of both Saragat and Hito like he has the strict code to duty, honor and knighthood like Hito, but he also has a more snarky and jovial side like Saragat, he definitely has a more of a big brother kind of personality. Sadly we don't get the dynamic duo of Howard and his demon friend, but the game makes it up by having this blacksmith who is this lovecraftian creature and this merchant who is also a lovecraftian creature. The blacksmith he feels human as he has regrets, flaws and fears, he also doesn't look down on humanity in fact he actually serves a human master willingly and has great respect for him and also gives a good reason why other lovecraftian entitys don’t like humans, I also like the fact that he takes a lot of pride in his blacksmithing despite coming from a race with advanced technology that could just create weapons with a press of a button he takes pride in doing it the old-fashioned way. And then there is the Merchant who's also in a inhuman entity, I like how off putting is like he's the perfect counter to the blacksmith, like while the blacksmith is inhuman lovecraftian entity he has a lot of human characteristics and feels natural, while the merchant feels like a lovecraftian entity trying to pretend to be human, but failing, he can be quite a funny creature. The graphics are good like the previous games the creator really takes the pixel graphics as far as he can go with its uses of colors and designs, but still keeping a kind of retro feel in fact each of the different levels in the game are quite nice to look at. The levels are good we get a lot of interesting levels not just from the Japanese Mansion, but we get a weird upside down ocean/underwater cave and even an alien spaceship. I love the Japanese mansion and grounds they're quite beautiful to look at and pretty accurate for that time period, I also like the spaceship even though it could be a bit annoying sometimes with these pillar enemies, but it was definitely spooky particularly seeing people just in the background and there's no explanation for them, they're just there. The enemies and bosses are good like previous games they reuse some of the old enemies, but like in the third game they have their own unique enemies like evil samurai and ninja. The bosses were all good each one had their own unique designs especially the final boss, he has a pretty interesting design. The music is good I feel like it was better than the music in the third game. Okay then let's talk about the dislikes, like with the third game there isn't a new game plus in this one, I'm okay with it as unlike the third game we don't get any new weapons, also sadly there is no multiple endings to this game except for like refusing the contract, I can somewhat understand why that is, but would be nice to have at least two extra endings. Finally there are two bosses that are a pain, one is the thinking machine for the alien spaceship as sometimes it can summon these monolith enemies that can kill you in one hit if you're stamina is low and the shoggoth boss as it has regenerating health and it's in a small arena that can fill up with acid spit from the boss when its hurt. Okay with that all done Skautfold: Moonless Knight is a really good game and an excellent follow-up to Skautfold: Into the Fray and another good game in the Skautfold series, it has a very good story, very good gameplay and really good characters and a lot more, so I definitely recommend this game and I certainly can't wait to play the last game in the series kinght’s end.
Kill cultists. Kick cultists. Behead cultists. Stomp on cultists. Light cultists on fire. Grappling hook cultists. Shock cultists with lightning. Teleport behind cultists. Shoot cultists full of arrows. Reflect cultists attacks back at them. Parry cultists. Laugh in the face of cultists as you cut them down one by one until naught remains but yourself.
A nice game. Nice writing, especially if you like lovecraftian themes. Fun gameplay and interesting bosses.I beat it in 12 hours but i could replay the bosses as it has a BossRush mode and an ascencion type difficulty.
Dev would rather ♥♥♥♥♥ endlessly about being misunderstood on discord than make a video tutorial explaining how combat works, even though he's made five games now and has been ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about being misunderstood since the beginning. What's that saying about if you always meet ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥?
Feels like a walking simulator. 1. 13 layer map with 70-80% area repeating itself. 2. The enemies are boring. After some time you just evade every enemy while figuring out the map. 3. Combat is a bit clunky. 4. Nothing interesting happens for most of the time besides boss battles (the only fun part). Just play the first 2 (Shrouded in Sanity and Usurper) games of the series. Can't recommend 3rd (Into the fray) and 4th (this) game. I don't really care about the last game (Knight's End) anymore.
uma das melhores franquias de jogos indie que ja conheci. recomendo pra c@r@lho!!!!!!
